Gay StarCraft Players - Page 287

Don't post in this thread to say "gay gamers are like everyone else, why do they have a special thread?" It is something that has been posted numerous times, and this isn't the place for that discussion. For regular posters, don't quote the trolls.

Have any of you guys ever had the fear that your favorite player that you love and worship might turn out to be a homophobic jerk? As you guys know, I run DRG's fanclub around here. This is going to sound completely stupid but the reason I haven't posted here often lately is because I was afraid that it might freak DongRaeGu out. I'm out to most everyone in my life, so I don't care who knows. But it would kill me if say, DRG...who's Korean... which correlates to a high chance of being a devout Christian...would be put off or scared of me for who I am... I'm honestly afraid to know the truth. No heroes are perfect. What do you guys think? Am I out of my mind?

I'm honestly afraid to know the truth. No heroes are perfect. What do you guys think? Am I out of my mind? I don't think you're out of your mind. I've thought a lot about what you just said lately; not specifically about players you are a fan of knowing you are gay, but about players having opinions and doing things that you might disagree with in general or even make it difficult to actually continue supporting them. I guess, to some extent, it wouldn't be news to anyone that being a fan isn't quite as simple as just liking someone's playstyle. There's that too, of course, but most of the players with really big fanbases manage to get attention and supports due to their personalities as well. Fans tend to look up - or at least feel some kind of connection to - their players as people, not just as players. You kind of want them to be people you could, hypothetically, hang out with and get along with, not just people you watch play a game. There's sort of a hero worship aspect to it, in a sense, and I don't think there's something wrong with that in itself. It can get problematic, though, if it means that fans defend their player and make excuses for everything he/she does. I mean, I guess everyone is familiar with the type of fan who will critisize and whine about everything and everyone while making demands about what players and/or other public members of the community has to do, etc. Those people are really annoying. It can, however, sometimes also be annoying with fans who will seemingly crawl beneath the feet of their favourite players, forgiving and excusing everything they do, no matter how stupid. It's essentially the hero worship aspect gone wrong, IMO. So, to be more specific; I don't think you should try to hide who you are from a player you like, if you think there's a chance they'll find out. DRG seems like a pretty cool guy, he kills MKP and doesn't afraid of anything, and if he really is the cool guy he seems like, he'll probably appreciate that you have managed his fanclub. Even if he does find the whole think being a bit weird, he should at least appreciate your dedication and support, right? And, as boring and cliché as it is to say this; if he really starts hating someone who has shown so much dedication to him and has helped him gain more fans for being gay, then, well...maybe he doesn't deserve someone managing his fanclub? I mean, if a player turns out to be a homophobic jerk, I'd hope people wouldn't be afraid to call them out on it instead of just making excuses. Eh, I don't know if any of this made any sense, it's 01:47 in the morning at the time of typing this and I'm just rambling at this point...

I remember I used to watch NuketheStars SC1 videos all the time and then one time he slipped and said something disparaging about gay marriage and I felt a little crushed. I dont know that it should matter or anything but somehow watching/listening to somebody for hours on end does create an emotional bond.

Even though I still don't label myself as fully gay, I have been posting mostly in this thread and some fanclubs. I think it is pretty safe to say I am a rather hardcore fan of NaNiwa and SaSe and I am terrified they will somehow be offended or find my love for them creepy in any way. So, even if it is not exactly the same, I at least fully understand where your fear is coming from. I doubt we have real reason to worry too much though, since I am pretty certain our favorite players got a lot worse things coming their way from this pitchfork-loving-community. In addition it seems like most of the Korean progamers is pretty liberal compared to the rest of the Korean population.

I'm honestly afraid to know the truth. No heroes are perfect. What do you guys think? Am I out of my mind? In terms of religion, I think you're confusing South Koreans, and Korean Americans. Yes, Korean Americans are very devout. Link here to see stats: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Korean_Americans#Religion Also, side bar, the largest church I have ever seen in person was a Korean Church. However, Koreans, born and raised in Korea, are most likely non-religious (over 46%). Link here to see the stats. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_korea#Religion Yes, there are Koreans, born and raised in Korea, that are homophobic, as evident by the fact that you cannot be gay and serve in the military. However, the younger generation is more tolerant to homosexuality, and some even support it. I was watching Liquid Hero's stream and he played Lily Allen's "Fuck You." If you haven't heard that song, it's almost as pro-gay as Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." That being said, I know it will be heartbreaking if you watch DRG's stream and see him waving a big cross in the camera and repeating that bible passage from Leviticus that every homosexual has heard. You may choose to continue to support him, or reject him. Closing the DRG fan page wouldn't seem like such a good idea though. Even if DRG is blattenly homophobic, you can learn to deal with it. Another side bar: My first crush was my childhood best friend that I spent most of my time with. He called me "faggot" almost every day even after I came out to him. I still, somehow, fell madly in love with him. To this day, I don't know why I loved him so much after the stuff he said, but I just did. Back on track. The chances that DRG will outwardly show hostility toward a group of people is very low. Part of his, and other gamers' desposable income comes from streaming, and he wouldn't want to alienate his fans, even if he's swimming in SC2 winnings. Hope everything works out

For the most part its good to hear from the gay community but some members are getting a lil too explicit. I don't know that it is any more explicit than the stuff I'd hear about hot female actresses/female singers from the hetero-folk. But I'm not sure what you meant by straight friendly...All are welcome in this thread as far as I am concerned. I got no hate for the straight. :D
