My latest read - another one which tragically isn't as famous as it should be in my opinion :D
Vinland Saga is a historically inspired - and roughly accurate for the setting at least - Manga which mostly takes place during the Viking invasion in England around 1000 a.D.. The English don't really play a role in it though, it's absolutely focussed on the Vikings.
Thorfinn - on the image above - is the main character. He's around 17 years old during the main storyline and a member of the very successful 100 man raiding party of a Viking called Askeladd, although all he actually wants is to kill that man. Later the story also introcudes Thorkell, a Viking who really existed, but who's a bit stronger than the actual person :D + Show Spoiler +Thorkell does not like Horses very much. The royal family of Denmark also becomes part of the story later. Let me just tell anywhone who didn't read it so far that the story as some quite amazing and unexpected turnarounds.
Stylistically and demographically, Vinland Saga is somewhere between Shounen and Seinen. It's quite violent and contains a lot of the usual stuff most people associate with Viking plunderings: Killing civilians, torture, rape, looting, burning down villages. The display however is rather moderate. A quite rare part is that all these things are absolutely only told from the Vikings' point of view, who take these things very easy, as most of them only care to go to Valhalla by dying an honorable death in combat, thus most minor characters appearing are totally battle-crazy bloodlusted Berserkers. The general scenario is rather realistic - not very accurately though - with some slightly supernaturally skilled characters from time to time. No sorcery or extremely supernatural elements though, although the effect of the mushrooms some Vikings take to enter Berserk rage kinda reminded me of the magic potion from Asterix and Obelix (It's not that extreme though, don't worry, and much cooler as they can't differentiate between friend and foe anymore).
The art is very nice imo, it's a quite detailled and clear style.
Vinland Saga sadly only has 68 chapters - of approximately 30 pages each - yet, and is released on a monthly basis. It makes a very enjoyable read imo

Definately a good manga

Waiting for ongoing monthly manga is so damn frustating

I read through the entire series so far at this recommendation. I liked it and recommend it. Slightly similar to Ubel Blatt.

best punch? lol i dont think so
+ Show Spoiler +
Oh by the way, Vinland is the best fucking manga I have ever read.
|
Ugh, waiting for another month again. Can someone recommend me another manga that similar to vinland saga?
|
Northlanders ... it's an American comic.
|
Vinland is awesooooome. Kinda been annoyed lately that I wait a month for another farming chapter but it seems like it's starting to pick up speed now.
|
the wait until the newest chapter took forever, but yeah its a decent comic
|
Can't wait for more fighting. Farming is good and all but there needs to be blood and senseless killing.
|
looks good
gonna check it out later =)
thanks a bunch

It's kinda sad that for the past year, I keep checking up on it only to have more farming chapters (Is his farming lvl 99 yet? I'm pretty sure you won't need that much in Vinland). Hopefully, chapter 69 is the turning point.

I just read the latest chapter... I think things are starting to heat up again :D

Figured I'd bump this since I recently re-read it. It's up to chapter 82 now.
Pretty funny to say but the farming stuff is legitimately about to end in 3-4 chapters (aka 6-8 months with this manga because while it's monthly the guy skips some months...). I guess teekesselchen was a little off ahah. To be fair it's been "over" for a while since they didn't focus on it but I mean him leaving the farm.
It's still a great manga though. The first half is action packed, the second half is a much different type of story. It reminds me of Vagabond in that way (another great manga that recently came back from a long break). I'm eager to see Canute meet up with Thorfinn again. Of course, I was eager to see it the first time I read this manga back in 2010 or so but oh well.
Highly recommended for action fans that want a deeper story (IE not a kid's story). Just be wary it's a slowly updated manga (think Berserk, but the chapters are 30 pages instead of 10 ahah).

oh shit I forgot all about this wicked series. Time to get back into reading it! :D
