Tossgirl’s Medic Date – Jung Myung Hoon (Fantasy), “I won’t forget ToSsGirL-noona’s teachings”
Hello, this is STX SouL’s progamer Seo Ji Soo (ToSsGirL).
Last week we met Samsung Khan’s Song Byung Goo (Stork) and had an enjoyable interview to have. Even though he’s the oldest progamer currently active (nope it’s Reach but now retiring, then Canata I think) but still is maintaining his top position, while looking at Stork you can see how much effort he puts in. Of course he definitely deserves on being called one of the best players. (T/N: Singles him out as best, but I think this is what it meant)
This week’s Medic Date interviewee is someone that made us think of a lot during Stork’s interview. We didn’t mention him in Stork’s interview but, there is someone who made Stork more famous than others. It is the Silver King, Hong Jin Ho (YellOw)’s collected line’s ‘Kong Line’. Stork first became closest to YellOw’s silver record and entered the ‘Kong Line’ first. Afterwards Stork being the most fitting protégé, has received the fan’s love.
The reason why we did not approach Stork on the ‘Kong Line’ is because the next successor of the ‘Kong Line’ Jung Myung Hoon (Fantasy) came up. Who got as much spotlight as Stork about the ‘Kong Line’; Fantasy is today’s Medic Date interviewee.
Soon after there will be Proleague Finals with SK Telecom T1. When meeting Fantasy at the SK Telecom’s dorms, the players were absorbed in their practice. These players preparing for Starleague preliminaries and the finals, they sat still continuously beating on their mouse on keyboard. Amongst them, a player that looked very relaxed was Fantasy. Fantasy got silver in the last Starleague and had a seed; he had a more relaxed face than players preparing for their preliminaries.
Honestly Fantasy and I knew each other back in our amateur days. He is amongst the few progamers I could speak comfortably to. It’s a first meeting in this kind of place, and it’s been a while since meeting in the game studios so I was delighted to interview him.
Different from me who was glad, Fantasy was really timid. Even his face turned red. Fantasy said “I knew I would be shy but didn’t know it would be this bad” while failing to raise his head. He’s been a progamer for a long time, but confirmed that he is still an innocent 22 year old youth
◆Incredible amount of practice
TG – We’ve known each other a long time, why are you so shy (laugh).
FA – This feeling is a first for me too (laugh). Why is it so awkward? I don’t know why either (laugh). Meeting noona in this kind of place, weirdly my face is blushign (laugh).
TG – When you took off your glasses I couldn’t recognize you. Did you get lasik?
FA – I wanted to do it for a long time. It was bothersome wearing glasses. The fans said don’t do it, but I did it anyway (laugh). Some people say it’s better, and others saying better with glasses.
TG – When you take off your glasses, you really have big eyes. Your eyelashes are really long and your eyes are big. Your nose seems higher too. You have a really different feel now. The way I see it, you seem better without it.
FA – I hope the fans think that too (laugh). It’s before the finals, so even if it’s weird I hope they say it looks better (laugh).
TG – When you were an amateur we first met each other. Afterwards I think we practiced often. Since I spoke to you comfortably on battlenet, it doesn’t feel awkward using banmal with you.
(TN: banmal = half talk, less use of endings when speaking –yo –imnikka etc, used when you become friendly)
FA – It’s an honor that noona is using banmal for me (laugh). Back then I learned a lot from noona. Comparing my vT and vP matchups my vZ was hard, I think I’m doing well due to noona’s teachings.
TG – I don’t remember what I taught you. What was it?
FA – To me it’s still vivid (laugh). When playing against Zerg you told me to get scan the latest as possible. Instead of that, using SCVs to scout the opponent and if he is doing two-hatchery plays get a scan fast and check his tech tree, if the opponent is doing 3-hatchery play get your comsat station latest as possible to save resources. I’m still following those teachings.
TG – Ahh that’s what I told you (laugh). I remember now. But noticeably (Lee) Youngho[Flash] and you did improve really fast. Wondering how much practice you guys did, it was amazing how fast you guys were improving.
FA – It’s still the same now, but playing was really enjoyable. While enjoying playing the game, time passed by so fast. People were also surprised at my concentration. If I sit down once, I didn’t know how to stand up.
TG – I think you would’ve done well anything you tried. You’re saying you have good concentration. I’m so envious. I heard a lot about how much effort you put into your practice.
FA – It seems like there the gossip about my diligent practice had spread far. I think it’s was exaggerated a bit (laugh). In my practice partner days at SK Telecom there was break time between 5pm and 8pm. But even that time was precious so I just ate and continued to practice. It was fun learning things one by one, I just liked playing the game but the other hyungs seeing this told other teams, I think that’s how the gossip started.
I do practice my fair share, compared to my teammates this season I don’t think I’m on the level of practicing a lot. With the goal of winning this season, all the players are practicing their heart out. Of course, that affected me; I’m practicing a lot as well.
Although when I do my best, I put my all into it but when I don’t put it all, I really do not. In the past when games did not work out, I think I took about one hour break.
TG – Are you telling me resting for an hour is not practicing enough (laugh)? For other’s that is standard (laugh).
FA – Is that so? I never thought of that (laugh). If that’s the case I’ll agree with the views saying I practice hard (laugh).
TG – There were times for me too where I slept 4 hours each day. Of course now it’s increased nowadays (laugh). Not drinking alcohol all year too. I think that you would take care of yourself well.
FA – Since I have to practice the next day, not drinking alcohol etc I’m doing my best to take care of myself. If from personal reasons your record drops and you get into a situation where you cannot practice and it continues, I don’t think you can call yourself a professional. I go to great lengths to maintain that.
◆Fantasy’s mentor, Lim Yo Hwan / Choi Yeon Sung (BoxeR / iloveoov)
TG – The greatest Terrans Boxer-oppa and iloveoov, you had the chance to learn from them. You might call yourself lucky.
FA – As a progamer, in a mental standpoint I would call them my mentors. Firstly when I entered Boxer-hyung entered the service, so I learned a lot from iloveoov-coachnim. From one to ten I tried my best to absorb it all. Especially Choi-coachnim’s build making skills, he was excellent at it and to his credit vZ vP, vT I think he taught me the concepts of them perfectly.
For Boxer-hyung, he was the person who gave me the dream of becoming a progamer. Seeing Boxer-hyung play I raised my dream as a progamer, entered SK Telecom and played Terran. After his discharge I had a chance to be on the same team with him, it felt great. After seeing him practice, I felt like I had a lot to learn from him. He also gives me hope to continue progaming even when I enter my 30’s.
TG – You must have been surprised when your mentor iloveoov-coach entered the service.
FA – I wasn’t surprised. Choi-coachnim let me play freely long before his entering the army (laugh). I think he thought I had to adapt now. Because I know the standards now, it’s not bad preparing alone.
TG – Thinking about it, you did great this season alone. Maybe it’s your best proleague season for wins and percentage so far.
FA – It’s true (laugh). Really from the past there were talks ‘He is iloveoov-coach’s puppet’, ‘if there is no Choi-coach, Fantasy is just a body’ etc, there were lots of criticism back then. To defeat those kinds of judgments, after Choi-coachnim entered the service I made a resolution that I will do even better. Compared to the past, I practiced even harder. Still until I prove myself in individual leagues, I don’t think they’ll judge me completely out of Choi-coachnim’s shadow.
TG – But after Fantasy, you might have regrets to have no one continue SK Telecom’s Terran line.
FA – Truthfully it’s sad. My mentor Boxer, iloveoov, I’m happy to just have my name linked and mentioned with them. But afterwards there is no calling for anyone to continue SK Telecom’s Teran line alive. Whether it’s (Jung) Yeongjae [yeOngJae] or (Choi) Hosun [Ssak], I hope they adapt quickly to broadcasted games. They’re really good in practice.
◆A misconception of SK Telecom, number one.
TG – To prepare for this interview I looked at lots of forums but it seems there are many rumors about SK Telecom. There were lots of points that I wondered if they were true.
FA – Honestly I knew that too. Amongst them the most ridiculous rumor was related to individual league and Proleague. Last season Kim Taek Yong (Bisu)-Hyung had an interview where he did not get much individual league practice time, because of that there was a huge uproar. But since I entered the finals, fans were like ‘You don’t give practice time to Bisu but only to Fantasy’, really nonsensical statements. You can’t even force that (laugh).
TG – Of course (laugh). That doesn’t make sense. If you try to control individual league practice time, would the players stay still? So there were those kinds of misunderstandings.
FA – At first I chuckled and let it pass but later it slowly became a serious matter. The fans were fighting on the forums. After Bisu-hyung saw those kinds of posts ‘The person that wrote that is definitely my anti-fan’ he told me. We don’t pay attention to those kinds of rumors. Because they aren’t true.
TG – Weren’t you frustrated? With the reason you did well in individual league, that ridiculous rumor was born.
FA – I wasn’t depressed from it. If you put your attention to each kind of those posts, you can’t be a progamer (laugh). Noona must know as well. If you try responding to those absurd posts every day, you become more damaged. So I pay no attention to them at all.
TG – Thinking about it, it started from your improving individual league record (laugh). Is there a reason why your Starleague record so good?
FA – When I was young I didn’t have MBC Game channel at my house (laugh). Ongamenet’s best league was Starleague after all. At that time winning a Starleague that means you ascend the Star throne. It a place where every progamer dreams of. Maybe because of that, when I’m in the Starleague stage it feels I put more effort in and I can concentrate more too.
Of course I want to good in all leagues. I wanted to enter an MSL finals too (laugh). But strangely for me, it seems I have a deeper connection with Starleague.
TG – Soon the Starleague prelims are starting. You must feel refreshed again.
FA – After when I won Starleague, it opened up after several months so I was sad. But the one who beat me (Heo) Youngmoo-hyung [JangBi] must have felt the same way. I reached two Starleague finals in a row, but I bet not many people will remember that (laugh). Really I hope they open more often.
TG – Are you confident to reach the finals again?
FA – I’ll have to do my best. To reach the finals 3 times in a row as Terran, it would be nice to be remembered like that. Good luck in your prelims too Noona.
TG – Ok. I’ll do my best (laugh). In return, tell me a good vZ build (laugh).
[oh sh, you better watch out herO[jOin] :D]

[Tossgirl’s Medic Date] Jung Myung Hoon (Fantasy)“Surpassing Lee Young Ho (Flash), I’ll become number one”
Hello this is STX SouL’s progamer Seo Ji Soo (ToSsGirL).
Last week we covered the connection between me and Fantasy, practice amount, Fantasy’s life mentor and about SK Telecom. The more I talked with Fantasy, I thought he was an incredible player. Especially talking about practice schedules, he considered resting an hour as “When I rest, I definitely take a break”, seeing him talk like you can see how he can stay as one of the best for a long time.
Also since I play Terran like him, I’m really envious. Fantasy after entering SK Telecom T1, he had the chance to learn from Lim Yo Hwan (BoxeR) and Choi Yeon Sung (iloveoov), eSport’s two of the greatest Terrans that played the game. If you are a Terran player, it’s a dream come true, and for Fantasy he experienced it firsthand, honestly I was jealous. I bet all Terran players would think the same way.
Before we got into the real content with Fantasy, the last medic date ended. The topics we covered topics that were so long, we did not even get to Fantasy’s trademark ‘Kong Line’. This week we will cover many topics the fans are curious about.
Fantasy is approaching the Proleague Finals soon but he did not look a bit nervous. He was enjoying this situation. Also he strongly expressed his disappointment about the lower number of games. While the pros not being able to show true skills during broadcast games and with numerous progamer that are unable to spread their names, Fantasy’s calm composure looked impressive. You can see why he can still show strong aspects of his game on the big stage.
Let us start with Fantasy & SK Telecom, and the interesting episodes about him and the ‘Kong Line’.
◆Misconceptions of SK Telecom, number two.
TG – There are other things I’m curious on other than not giving practice time for individual leagues. The SK Telecom aces ‘Doh-Taek-Myung [Doh Jae Wook / ‘Best’, Kim Taek Yong / ‘Bisu’, Jung Myung Hoon / ‘Fantasy’], there are rumors that you guys are not that friendly. Is that a misunderstanding or truth?
FA – Half is true and half is false (laugh). For me I’m friendly with both Best-hyung and Bisu-hyung. But those two are awkward toward each other. At first I thought ‘maybe they think each other as rivals’. But I don’t think that’s it either. Since they are so awkward, when us three are together they both only talk towards me. Then it becomes an entire awkward atmosphere.
TG – So specifically ‘Doh-Taek’ are awkward toward each other?
FA – Exactly (laugh). Since us three tend to win more often, we take more winner pictures together. So as time passed by, I’m in the center. If it went by alphabetical order I should be on the most right side, but the hyungs push me to the middle (laugh). If you look at pictures with us three, you’ll see that I’m in the middle in most (laugh).
TG – As Fantasy sees it, why do you think they are so awkward towards each other?
FA – It’s not that they think of another as rivals, and also not that they hate each other. Normally when you’re friendly you joke around and being able to trash talk a bit is needed. Especially Best-hyung and Bisu-hyung are huge pranksters. But weirdly they don’t trade jokes between themselves.
I think the reason might stem from their first meeting. When Bisu-hyung entered the team, he was the strongest player at the time. And for Best-hyung, he just started to receive some attention. After the transfer, Bisu-hyung knowing Best-hyung pride might be damaged, acted carefully around him. Also for Best-hyung, since Bisu-hyung was such an incredible player, treated him in high regards. From the beginning they both tried being courteous towards each other, in the end I think they just became cautious.
So while you mention ‘Doh-Taek-Myung’ is awkward, please take the ‘Myung’ out (laugh). I’m not awkward with them. Just that I’m in between two people who are.
TG – Stories and rumors that surround SK Telecom are being revealed one by one through Fantasy (laugh).
FA – Who else would dispel these misunderstandings (laugh). I think the hyungs will never explain this situation with their own mouths. But nowadays I think it has gotten better. Later, please try and interview both of them together (laugh).
◆Fantasy and the ‘Kong Line’.
TG – The time has come. When interviewing Fantasy, it’s not interesting until you ask about the ‘Kong Line’.
FA – I’m prepared (laugh). Also today I’m expecting some strong questions, so it’s a bit worrying.
TG – That worry will soon become reality (laugh). SK Telecom has gotten two-time straight 2nd places. They talk about this as Fantasy’s ‘Kong Line’ curse, what do you think?
FA – That question is a hard one (laugh). Really even if I won and see my team lose continuously, I think I worried about one second on the curse of the ‘Kong Line’ spreading to my team (laugh). I won but if the team loses, I’m not happy at all. But even this season, there were lots of similar situations as well. Maybe because of that, I don’t have good award-fortune also.
TG – Whether it’s comparing your record and spotlight, I think it’s unbalanced for you.
FA – I think that way sometimes too. If I win a game in a stylish fashion, that day is when my team loses (laugh). Or if Bisu-hyung loses to a rookie (laugh). If that happens, the focus naturally matches that way. In those moments I think ‘I really have bad luck’. I’m a person too.
TG – I don’t think it’s just about ‘Kong Line’ but maybe the sadness of the 2nd class. Inside the team you’re overshadowed by Bisu and Flash in Terran as well, there is a strong 2nd class feeling, aren’t you upset?
FA – If I say I’m not upset, that would be a lie. In the beginning I received a lot of stress. I’m really putting my all into it but it made me think ‘why am I always stuck around 2nd place’, and thinking about it made me frustrated often. Although ‘Kong Line’ made me think more positively (laugh). Thinking of 2nd place as not just anyone can accomplish and as a good record, it gave me lots of strength. Also it gives me many chances to steal 1st places as well. Thinking on the bright side, it made me work even harder. Being 2nd class is not a bad thing at all. It gives me motivation to continue my gaming.
TG – Did you ever think about how to escape this 2nd class?
FA – I don’t really mess around trying to escape it. If I do, I think I’ll just receive more stress. I think the best solution is practicing happily trying to catch up the opponent in front of me. Instead of being aware of others, being focused on myself I’m confident that in time I will become 1st class.
TG – I hope you don’t get too upset not receiving attention. I receive plenty of it, but I’m so envious of Fantasy right now. Instead of judging progamers based on attention, they should be based on skill.
FA – Noona’s advice is becoming a lot of strength for me? Thank you. I’ll think of it like that and press on (laugh).
◆Life rival, Lee Young Ho (Flash).Flash
TG – What kind of existence is Flash to Fantasy?
FA – He’s my lifelong rival. Of course Flash might not think that way, but back then right now and in the future I think of Flash as a rival and will try my best to catch up to him.
TG – In that sense, this final will become an important stage for you.
FA – It is an extremely important stage. I still feel the pain from last season. Honestly if you’re a progamer, beating Flash in a proleague finals ace match would be an exhilarating situation for anyone. It’s the same for me as well. But instead of another person playing, until I complete that task the thrill become greater for me. I also desired to meet him in a high individual league stage with multiple sets.
I’ve never erased Flash from my head even once. Seeing Flash debut and seeing him doing so well, I kept thinking ‘my rival is Flash’ as I practiced. I was just a practice partner at the time, but in my head there were plenty of thoughts on trying to become a more superb player than Flash. Because of that, I think that’s how I grew so fast and could win an individual league title.
TG – I knew both of you during the amateur days, and I think you two really improved a lot in a short time. You both were probably rivals back then also.
FA – Long before the fans found out about us, I thought of Flash as my rival. It was probably around the moment when Tossgirl-noona saw us. Flash is the force that made me improve, even now the mountain I have to go over and my lifelong rival.
TG – When will you make that dream come true?
[T/N - Taek-Bang-Leessang = Bisu-Stork-Jaedong-Flash]
FA – Personally, I think we need a generation switch. After ‘Taek-bang-lee-ssang’, the generations stopped. I feel the responsibility to change that. I don’t want to drag one of the ‘Taek-bang-lee-ssang’ down and go in there myself. We have to make a new thing. If another phrase other than ‘Taek-bang-lee-ssang’ becomes more called upon, I think that’s when my dream can come true. Overcoming Flash, I don’t think it is impossible.
TG – Aside from that, you’re meeting KT in the finals again how did you feel when that was decided? Meeting the same team 3 years in a row in the finals might be tiring now.
FA – Truthfully I wanted Samsung Khan to come up. Preparing for KT is bothersome (laugh). If we’re like this, how would the fans or the organizers feel (laugh). I think the journalists are probably out of topics to write articles about (laugh). Maybe they’ll copy paste last year’s articles? Of course they’ll do their best, but becoming tired of it I agree.
TG – Isn’t this a relaxed answer to someone who has it all? (laugh)
FA – Is that so?
◆”Towards number one!”
TG – This is one of the medic date’s frequent questions. If you win the Lotto as 1st place, what would you like to do most?
FA – First I’ll sponsor Starleague in my name (laugh). I want to open a shop. Maybe a drinking bar or a coffee shop. Recently people say liquid establishments are doing okay. And with the leftovers I would spend with my family. I think I’ll continue my progamer life.
TG – What would you do if you had three wishes?
FA – Firstly, I would wish for 10 billion won to appear in my account so I can live without worrying about money. Also for a girlfriend that looks similar to Suji to appear. Those two wishes are everything.
[Ref. Miss A’s Suji]
+ Show Spoiler +
TG – I guess there is no need for an ideal girl world cup (laugh). You just said it directly.
FA – Is that so (laugh). I like Suji. Recently IU is the most popular, but girls that look like a younger cousin or just a younger girl dongsaeng, I can’t see them as desirable.
[Ref. 3-dan IU might convince Fantasy otherwise]

+ Show Spoiler [EAAAAAAAAM!] +
TG – This is Medic Date’s last question. Your final dream?
FA – First I want to be a gamer as long as I can. Even when changing games, I want to be remembered as a consistently good player. Surviving as long as possible till the end, tiresomely I want to keep showing my face to the fans.
Also I still have not reached number one yet, as a progamer I want to be recognized as number one. I will prove that with my own hands, that you can be a progamer in the 30’s. I have not achieved number one yet, so my dream as a progamer is bigger at the moment.
TG – Have you dreamed a little farther out?
FA – It’s simple (laugh). Marrying a pretty wife, and afterwards and running a small shop in Busan [his hometown] and living happily ever after (laugh). Since Seoul’s land prices are so expensive, don’t you think setting up one in Busan is better? When the time comes looking at the economic state, I’ll decide whether to live in either Seoul or Busan (laugh).
TG – I hope you do well in the finals.
FA – I will. In this final I want to get the MVP (laugh). To get that my opponent has to be at least Flash right (laugh). Please cheer for me noona.
[T/N – Eung is like, sure/yes/mhm]
TG – Eung. This time I’ll root for SK Teleco (laugh).
FA – I hope I can see noona playing in matches too.
