First up, don't buy it. It's bad.
The first xbox Ninja Gaiden is still in my top 5 games of all time. It is AWESOME. The second one was also excellent.
I loved the first two so much that when I saw 3 on the shelf at JB hifi the other day I instantly bought it. I sat down to play today and about 6 hours later I had finished. With the creator of all the previous Ninja Gaiden games (as well as many of the Dead or Alive games, which I incidentally haven't played) having left the company, some new guy stepped up. He shouldn't have.
The majority of the features have been cut:
- Only 8 levels - 1 weapon only - 1 magic attack (ninpo) - No items of any kind - Vastly less combos - Really easy compared to past games - Wierdass story - Repetitive bosses - No real antagonist to speak of
The thing that REALLY pissed me off though is that they tried to show his feelings. They made my favourite game character ever, an unstoppable dragon ninja, a massive pussy. He goes through half the game to be nice to some ugly little munchkin who ends up killing half of Japan. He also gets cursed and whinges a bit but it doesn't actually have any effect.
The only thing that I liked was the visuals, it does still look pretty cool. They have added multiplayer and DLC and stuff but I don't have Live, so meh. None of these were remotely enough to satisfy the anticipation I had when I saw it in store. I feel robbed.
Lastly, don't buy it. It's bad.

Wow, I guess itagaki was a huge force behind this series, but you would've thought the team might have learned something from working with him. Or maybe this was just the suits coming in and asking them to make the series "more popular"(I'm especially surprised with people telling me how easy the game is)... The story never really made too much sense to me though, right from the start on the nes.

1 weapon? really? that suuuuuuuuuucks thanks for the review

This is one of the games that makes you think what were they thinking? Easy ninja gaiden with 1 weapon? What?
|
I was so excited about this game when it was announced because I really felt that ninja gaiden 2 was not at the same level as ninja gaiden.
It's unfortunate to see it panned by major reviewers. I guess I'll be skipping this one.

Ninja Gaiden 3 was a disappointment?
Then it's done its NES predecessors justice.

Totally offtopic, but @OP, I love your username.

i remember ninja gaiden 1 being so hard and frustrating that i never played it or any other again.

It is quite hard but with practice it isn't so bad on normal difficulty, it's worth playing through if you get the chance again. Mind you I still can't beat the very first boss on the hardest setting lol

This is why you always quickly check a review or two before putting down money for a game. That ninja gaiden 3 is a massive failure has been known for days.

dlc is coming already, there are gonna be more weapons

Reading the title I thought you'd be talking about NES ninja gaiden lol such an epic series.
I miss those Nintendo hard games.

Is there really anyone that surprised that when Itagaki left and took most of Team Ninja with him that the new Team Ninja games would suck?
|
I was watching this game streamed the other day for about an hour and it's pretty bad from what I can tell. It didn't look like there was much skill involved and the streamer was basically saying that it's a constant one button press for attack with the occasional ninpo here and there. Very lackluster.

This is disappointing. NG was one of my favorite reboot titles (the first one was particularly amazing). Everything I've read seems to indicate this was a total rush-job were a bunch of ideas to change the franchise didn't come together. I'm not going to give them my money.
It sorta seems like what happened with Devil May Cry 2, but much, much worse.

Nope, I was about to say the samething! Tomonobu Itagaki is the man, That is all.

lol DMC2 was pretty bad. But DMC3 brought the series back.
Oh man, I played through Ninja Gaiden Black so many times from normal through very hard difficulty - master ninja was just too hard. Good times.

I'm not at all surprised. You know, when the trailer for a console game is 90% cut scene footage; it's a very good indicator that the game is going to be awful.

Huh?
Despite being absurdly difficult, the Ninja Gaiden games were by far some of the best titles on the NES. You forget just how incredibly awful games were back then.

Man, I remember DMC3 killing the hell out of my roommates. Neither of them could get past the twin scimitar bosses. I must've spent 2 weeks trying to beat them. I still don't know if there's a more clever way to beat them than 'try desperately hard to get a parry on their attacks'

Maybe he means that Ninja Gaiden 3 on the NES also was a dissapointment.
