spoilered this because im not sure if this was a popular game for wii. i dont think it was but im not sure t.t
Holy shit I played that game through soooooo much. I still pop it in every once in a while for a playthrough. Was my favorite N64 game, especially since I have a twin sister so I would always pretend that was us tearin' space apart with our dog hahaha
Oh and the entire dragon warrior/quest monsters series (but someone else already posted that). Had the most involving breeding system EVER. Joker and Joker 2 is good but DWM 1 for sure was the best.
Third favorite game growing up even above FFX and the like :O
I'm going to have to bust out my playstation soon >.<
I'm not sure how much advertisment all these ones got because I don't watch TV or shit like that but here are a few that I really enjoyed over the last year:
Trine is a physics-based action game where three characters allow clever solutions to challenges created by hazardous puzzles and threatening enemies. The gameplay is based on fully interactive physics - each character's different abilities and tactics can be used to invent new ways to overcome obstacles and save the kingdom!
The game is rather short and easy (even on the hardest setting), and it also happened to be pretty buggy. I had to reset more than a few times from being stuck/bugged. Besides that, It's really fun and looks beautiful. As far as action puzzlers go, this is a bit more action than puzzle. I haven't tried to go back and collect eveyrthing I'm sure there are better endings or something because the ending was really shitty, then again the story was kind of meh also.
This is a 1v1 fighting game that has been around for over 10 years. It has ports for many systems even hacked online versions for free to multplayer (assuming excellent connection). It has recently released an updated version for xbox360 called 3SOE which has a number of achievements and other DLC.
This game may or may not be a hidden gem, but it always seems like the people I talk to have never heard of anything besides SF4 and SF2. In fact when SF4 came out people were like wtf? where is 3? So I think this qualifies. This is in my opinion the most fun best SF/Fighting game in the genre. It has a parry system, so even though some characters are blatantly imbalanced the skilled player always has a chance with any character.
Available for PC and many systems including a weaker ported version for free flash play. This is a tower defense type of game. You are the gardener and the zombies are trying to kill you. You need to collect and upgrade plants in order to stop then from getting your brains. With many many levels and puzzle, bonus, and extra modes this game has great replayability for all ages. (me 4 year old nephew loves certain modes of this game). It is challenging as well as fun.
This may not be so hidden gem on these forums since the creator's daughter (the girl who sings the zombie song and helped a lot in the production of the game) said she based a lot of the stuff on starcraft and it caught a lot of hype on this site in a few threads. The most challenging mode is the endless and the reverse mode where you are the zombies. Really grate game.
Nimbus is a unique combination of racing & puzzling. The player controls a craft with no means of directly propelling itself and needs to use whatever is scattered around the levels to acquire thrust and reach the goal. Traverse a world map with several distinct islands in order to recover your lost love.
I actually learned of this game through totalbisquit and it was really fun and challenging. There are tons of secrets and achievements to collect on each level. Making every level more and more challenging. I actually never beat the last boss for this game because It takes so long to get to his hard part and you have to start all over if you die (on hardest mode). Lot of customization and cool level designs. I actually heard there is DLC and level editor and stuff which is really cool. Since this game is a racing puzzle game, there is always the extra challenge to get the fastest speed run for each level challenge. Definitely has a lot of replayability.
Has about the best, most responsive controls on the NES that I can think of. Great variety of levels and bosses. When you complete an area, you unlock a weapon/tool which allows you to proceed to the next area. Once you reach Area 3, you actually have to backtrack through all the levels to get to Area 4. Then, once you finish Area 4-6, you need to go back to Area 2 to proceed to Area 7. Then, once you finish Area 7, you have to go back to Area 3, which leads to Area 8.
Absolutely great game which flawlessly combines a few different game genres into one. Will probably take you well over 3 hours to finish, and it's a lot of fun. Has some of the most stunning graphics (well, for it's time) as well as the most iconic soundtrack (Area 3 and 6 were my favourite songs as a kid) the NES has to offer. Even today, I still play this game on emulators and such. It's just such an amazing game as well as being unique for the NES.
This game wasn't easy back in the days. The game was insanely long with no save feature, not even a password. A person had to complete this entire game in one sitting. And that's near impossible to do on the first couple of tries since near every stage was hidden throughout the game. It was trial and error. Combine that with only limited amounts of continues and you had one of the most challenging games that was ever released on the NES.
Story: You play as a kid named Jason who has a pet frog named Fred. One day, Fred leaps out of his container and leaps out into backyard. Fred somehow finds a radioactive container, grows HUGE, then proceeds to jump down a giant hole. Jason follows him, jumps down into the hole after him, somehow survives the fall of the hole. After that, he finds a truck/tank like thing called SOPHIA the 3rd. I assume inside the tank, there was a battle suit which Jason puts on, jumps into the battle tank, and thus starts the game.
Area 4 (8 Areas total in the game) This area made me shit bricks out of frustration as a kid when I first played the game in 1992 or something. Hell, I don't even remember what year it was. I always got stuck on the level 5 boss as well. Way back when walkthroughs ever came out for this game http://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/NES/BlasterMaster-Area4.png
Oh goodness, Seaman ( I lol at the name now), Power Stone and Toy Commander bring back sooo many memories! Dreamcast was super underrated, so many amazing games.
As for me, these two come to mind.
I haven't seen this game mentioned anywhere since. Such a great fighting game. Leveling up and getting new weapons, and which weapon you choose in each situation is crucial.
I was really young when I played this one. I honestly don't remember much about it, other than I was terrified of all the bad guys you have to fight.
A lot of people know about Treasure's other, more popular games. Gunstar Heroes and Ikaruga are cult classics, and rightly so. Unfortunately, very few people know about Alien Soldier. As far as platformers go, it's a VERY inventive and just downright fun game. It's fast paced and it really rewards players who play well. The soundtrack is fantastic too.
This game is the definition of hidden gem -- it's under appreciated even by most retro gamers.
Edit2: adding more info about the game
Here's a gameplay video:
One of the coolest things about this game is that you can just dash, and sort of teleport right through things. BUT, if you have full health then your character catches on fire and does crazy damage to things when it dashes. But after you do the little fire dash you lose a bit of health, so there ends up being this really cool dynamic where you try to flame dash, pick up HP, flame dash, pick up HP, etc. It really rewards good play. The difference between a scrub and someone who's good at the game really shows, and it makes the game SO much more fun to play over and over as you see your greater skill rewarded more and more.
Other neat gameplay aspects include being able to hover in the air and being able to double tap the shoot button to reflect bullets. Considering this game came out for the Sega Mega Drive it looks and plays SO much better than just about any other platformer of its time. It really deserves to be more well known. Such a fun game.

I love these action/puzzle type of games. Yes this is one of the best and so are the sequels. Each level can be as challenging as you want based on how many modukuns you want to rescue etc.
PS- Everyone in this thread is really failing.
The op doesn't want people to just post a pic of the games and say nothing or just "this game rocks' or whatever. We want actual descriptions of the games, links to trailers or gameplay, your thoughts on the game etc. It means absolutely nothing to just see the pictures of the games. Do you judge books by their covers alone? Besides, we've already had thousands of threads like that.
NES Side-Scrolling Platformer / Shooter (Metroid-ish) Top-Down Shooter
Absolutely great game which flawlessly combines a few different game genres into one. Will probably take you well over 2 hours to finish, and it's a lot of fun. Some of the most stunning graphics (well, for it's time) as well as the most iconic soundtrack the NES has to offer.
Was just about to mention Blaster Master. That game was so freaking hard, I never got past the third world (since continue brought you so far back lol)
I hope that I missed it in this thread somewhere because playing N2O (nitrous oxide) was probably the most fun i've ever had on a console. It's a pretty straight forward tunnel run game where you zoom through tunnels sliding up walls and along the ceiling to dodge incoming obstacles/bugs. The biggest kicker for me probably was that the game is FAST and it's set to the crystal method's Vegas CD. Yeah, it's really that awesome.
It was mine first encounter with the Horror genre (game based ofc.). And still in these days, nothing can tip it. The story is really sick, if you see a copy or something on Ebay or anything buy it!. Its a twistid story about a guy who has amnesia and wants to figure out what he's up to.
A must for a Point & Click fan. A must for a Horror fan. A must for anyone who is born in the 80's
"Harvester contains various scenes of violence and gore; implied sexual intercourse, masturbation and S&M; murder; suicide; child abuse; profanity; cannibalism; prostitution; pedophilia; serial killing; gerontocide, sexually transmitted diseases; and stereotypes of homosexuals, Native Americans, Italians, and others. This naturally caused controversy when the game was first announced, as early as 1994 at that year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES). At the time, several television news programs like CBS Evening News and NBC Nightly News included the (supposedly upcoming) new game in stories focusing on the link between video games and violence, as well as the need for a more established rating system."
Ecco the Dophin for the SEGA Genesis. One of the most misleading games ever made: dispite a game being about dolphins, it is NOT for children. This game is extremely hard and has a very dark storyline with one of the creepiest looking final bosses from any game.
Conker: Live and Reloaded: a revamp of Bad Fur Day with amazing graphics (one of the best on the system imo). That's not why it's on my list though, the online for this game is so freaking good. Squirrels vs Tediz in a class-based, gore filled, third-person shooter. Being a Scout and blowing a fourth of a squirrels head off is just so satisfying.
