Edit: The blog is about why gamers are labelled as nerds in comparison to similar activities like sports. Football, basket-ball, and hockey are all games too, just at a physical level. What makes a musician, artist or athlete any better than a gamer? Why are gamers nerds?
Being a gamer or introvert who avoids sports and social interaction is considered a bad thing. These type of people are usually labeled nerds / geeks / etc. But what really matters at the end of the day is what a person has accomplished. Having played a game of football or played a game of Starcraft is no different. Both have wasted your time and contributed nothing to society. One can argue that by being more of an athlete you are creating a healthier life style for yourself. One can also argue that by playing Starcraft you are improving your intellect and creativity. One can argue that sitting in front of a computer all day has negative health impact and contributes to obesity and bad posture, both traits frowned upon. One can argue that spraining your ankle or wrist and from playing a sport could lead to loss of productivity from being unable to write / walk for a week. Whichever is better overall is hardly what matters.
What matters in the end, to most people, is what a person has accomplished at the end of the day. I don't care if you're a great athlete or a great Starcraft player. What I do care about is whether you've used your talents to provide entertainment or innovation for myself or society as a whole. And so I respect great NBA players and NFL players and MLB players who are able to put on a good show, just as much as I respect great Starcraft players who are able to put on a good show. Not everyone sees sports and gaming as the same thing though, hence the controversy over e-sports and real-sports. Real sports are great, e-sports are for introverts. Silly. I don't get it when people compare the two and say one is better than the other. Personally, I find it sad that society has programmed individuals to automatically associate negativity with gaming. It isn't inferior, and that's not what people should be caring about anyways.

The majority of gamers are gamers not because they chose to be so, and would prefer to be on their own playing video games all day, but because they have to and have no friends.

Nicely said.
I would like to say that people are starting to embrace gaming now. I actually think one of the biggest reason why nerds are considered "lesser" in community is because of the media. When I was young, I was exposed to the prejudice by the media that gamers are ugly, have no life and have no place in our society (Mostly the influence of television), now I have a completely new viewpoint because I embraced gaming, and I think the media should change its prejudice towards nerds.
But I would also like to say society has changed, people at my school has embraced gaming, nerds aren't considered the lesser of society, everyone games and I mean everyone, i'm hoping this will eventually lead up to a brighter future for us nerds and Esports. One last thing; I think what creates this negative viewpoint is a personality and attitude that some people have. (The following may be completely wrong, just hypothesis) A loner is more likely to play games, thats why society regards him as a nerd thus the prejudice of nerds we have today.
There was this video where a guy was incredibly angry to his teammates for like nothing in an official tournament, most of the comments said "what a nerd" "stupid kid" and other negative things but I forgot what it was called so I couldn't link it sorry.
+ Show Spoiler +Please take note its the middle of the night so my reply isn't going to make sense, goodnight.

Ultimately I guess nothing matters. When I was a kid I used to think it was really awful that my mum wastes her life watching house wife TV all day. But what did I do, go out skateboarding all day and then come home and play video games. I don't understand today why I used to think I was so much better than her because I wasted my time in a different manner. Ultimately nothing matters so just do whatever you find fun because you might as well have some fun in your life. Sorry if that’s a bit Nihilistic
I'm not sure what point you where trying to make with the injuring your self playing sports part. But let me tell you its possible to injure you're self playing video games. My wrists are screwed from playing to much Broodwar. I didn't even play that much compared to some people (I guess I played with bad posture or some peoples bodies are just not made for it ㅜㅜ(I could never reach the build an overlord button with one hand either)). I realistically can't work in an office or anywhere I would have to use my wrists a lot all day for typing. I can type for a while but sustained typing all day is a definite no no.

Yes, this was kind of the point I was trying to make. Whether you play sports / socialize / play Starcraft, none of them really matter. Regarding injuring yourself playing sports, I was just trying to draw the comparison that there are disadvantages and advantages of both sports and gaming, and one disadvantage of sports would be that it can be just as physically damaging (if not more so) than the damage that comes with gaming and wrist / back injury. The difference is people find it entertaining to see a guy get slammed against the ground or get hit by objects flying at high speeds, but when a person has carpel tunnel syndrome there isn't anything to see, and people are only disgusted to hear of it rather than entertained.

On topic, honestly "nerd" isn't a well defined word: it used to have a very negative connotation (nolifer, socially inept, etc), but to me it's just being part of a certain "culture", or sharing a few specific interests, which are actually really wide and range from videogames, to sci-fi and fantasy, to modelling, to informatics and science...it's really quite wide. To me, that doesn't necessarily say anything about your social skills; you just have different interests.

Yeah... this is just plain wrong,
OP: I would just do what you're passionate about doing, as long as you continue to have some level of social interaction and can make money. Whether you're a gamer for a living or as a hobby, I don't think it matters. Just be happy

Wow .. you get banned for trolling on blog posts too?
I realize that something is wrong with the nerds in the west. You guys are too pitiful, just accepting that stigma called "no-lifers". No wonder E-Sports isn't growing fast enough
Well, to play games all day here in here in my country would be categorized as an 'addict'. Instead of being productive in life and making a living and earning money, we waste money to play games. And there is a shade of truth in that statement.

No, I was actually forced into playing the super nintendo when I was a kid, instead of doing homework.
My parents just refused to let me go outside and play in the sun, so I had absolutely no choice but to sit there and play Legend of Zelda... A tragic tale, indeed.

If I said something horribly stupid that was offensive to everybody around me, I doubt I would be 100% forgiven if I said "lol trolling!" afterwards.

Hell, even my mum calls me nerd all the time. But idc, because I do what is FUN for me, I prefer a good game of BW over a game of football, and not only because I am alot better and more practiced at BW, but because of the passion, of course football is fun, but the passion is a difference. Society is just too narrow minded in too many ways, but who cares, do what you like to do and not care what others think, it's your life.

Absolutely not! I among many others prefer to be on my own for quite a bit of time, i have friends, but who cares, why does society insist on people having friends? It's my life, and it is incredibly short, i should be able to do what i want to do and who i spend my time with.

Your argument sounds pretty weak tbh OP. I don't disagree that gaming gets a worse rap than it should. However I believe Football/Soccer/Baseball is much more fundamental for children to take part in than sitting down and playing Mario Kart for example. They can do that after they get some actual interaction with people.
I used to have friends that did nothing but game from a young age. Bunch of inept kids when it came to Socializing because they weren't used to doing it away from a screen / over voice chat. I can honestly say you CAN tell the difference from people who do nothing but game, and those who have played sports / joined some different clubs at school.
Those people give the rest of us this terrible reputation.
I must also add that I feel much more respect and admiration for Sports players like Jens Lehmann and Miroslav Klose than I do people like Idra or Boxer. + Show Spoiler +Both are incredibly hard workers which is why I used them as an example. What they do is honestly 10x harder than being a progamer and requires much more sacrifice.

if i could only choose between having better health (via playing active sports) or have higher intellect/creativity (via playing games), I would choose having better health. because you don't live longer from being smarter. so, that's why you do both
