So I hit 5k posts a couple of days ago. I thought about doing something special for it, but when I was coming up on it, I was right in the middle of helping someone troubleshoot on the tech board. I figured it would be kind of impolite to tell them to wait until I typed up some cool, vaguely philosophical thing.
Now don't get me wrong, I kind of understand the concept of milestones, but sometimes you see people who clearly spent a good deal of time typing up the "perfect" milestone post. Why? If your milestone post is relevant to the community, it's probably a better contribution than something that sounds like a high school valedictorian's overly cliched speech. I just couldn't make myself care about the post numbers.
Seems to me, that with the way TL is moderated and supposed to work, that hitting the milestone at all speaks of better contribution than rambling on about whatever topic. You know, sort of like I'm doing now. This post is probably less interesting to most of the community than most of what I do, just by nature of what I'm talking about.
So, on to more interesting stuff. For those of you who enjoy my random tech related rantings, I've opened a new blog dedicated to that sort of stuff, so that if I decide to spam stuff into it, I won't mess with the community. URL is http://jinglehelltech.blogspot.com
If you're interested, and don't mind seeing me get into full stride ranting about silly tech stuff, come give it a look. I try to keep adding content at a reasonable pace, and hopefully can keep it up longterm.
This was my 5.1k-ish post, for anyone wondering.

cool beans, I just started reading tech blogs. Will check it out

Fair warning, mine is long on rant and cynical.

Haha, I was skimming throught it and already noticed that

I read through one post (my room is dark atm, and I just woke up) and the blue lines were fucking with my mind.
Good blog so far though.

Congrats on your post number. I hit about 1k every month, so I don't bother with milestones anymore. I had something for my anniversary, but the idea is taking a bit longer to iron out.
The font for your blog is very heavy to read though.

I picked it because it reminded me of the default font on the particular XTerm I used to play MUDs when I was a kid.
And yeah, since I've been a member for something like 6 months, there's a reason this was my first post related to post count.
Would the font be easier to read if I stepped it up a size or made the color lighter?
|
It's not a terrible font. It's when you read long dialogues or pieces, it gets straining.
Maybe it's just for me, it's a small hindrance.
|
Kicked the font size up slightly, might make it a bit easier. This is a relatively new blog, so I'm very willing to take feedback on stuff like that.
|
Hey Jingle, I always see your posts in Tech Support. You really know your stuff and your blog is great too
|
Thanks, I appreciate the love. My moderately overinflated ego does too.
Wait, can my ego be overinflated if I recognize the inflation? Would the self-degradation inherent in that count as humility to balance it out?
|
No sir, I think that's just good old narcissism

I got rivu yesterday, also why are you a vulture?
|
I don't know why I'm a vulture, I just know I am. Should I not be? Maybe it has something to do with R1CH's secret equation that unlocks all the secrets of TL?

Thats more then TDL had I think.

The flying monkeys will destroy you.

Tech support board makes it look impressively high. A lot of those are 1-3 sentences suggesting things to try to fix something.
|
Congrats on the 5k posts! While you do randomly get unnecessary mad at some posters, I honestly think you're a great asset to the community and the tech forums in particular. I mean your average posts per day is a feat by itself, and this is not just random spam posts, but for for the vast majority helpful, insightful and thought through quality posts. Keep it up man - you're an inspiration to me
Btw. A suggestion to your blog: Could you tone down the white font on your blog (make it darker), it's really sharp to my eyes and kinda hard to read

Meh, the excessive venting is one reason I decided to move my tech blogging off TL. It will give me a place to go all tech rant-ish when I need to.
Although I might still end up giving people nightmares if they start something.
I'll see what I can do on the font, but it's kind of a delicate balancing act, eye strain vs excessive contrast.

I've learned from you, that writing with confidence can be helpful. Personally, when I get too annoyed I take a break from the forums. With the amount of posts you do, I assume you sit for many straight hours. For me, sometimes it accumulates to a point where something otherwise insignificant, finally lights my fuse - that's when I walk away for a break
|
Actually, I'm up and down all day, being a stay at home dad, I'm keeping tabs on my toddler, and hitting refresh any time he's calm for 30 seconds.
Just learn something else from me: Don't post with too much confidence, or you'll feel like an idiot when you're wrong. Better to say you're guessing or not sure than to invest yourself in a solid answer if you don't know.
