Ok, I've been wondering this for the longest time: Why do all progamers use earbuds under their headphones? Those Razer Banshees they are wearing have perfectly fine audio. Could someone enlighten me on this subject?
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure it's for maximum noise cancellation

Music for ultimate fist-pumping action when they win or soothing sounds of the sea to calm their jitters, etc. etc.

well i dunno about sc2 if they're waering razer banshees but in bw the progamers 'headphones' are actually for shutting outside noise out so they can't hear the commentators or the crowd etc

They also are made with cooperation from Blizzard, the people who made the game the people are playing.

Thats really not new, back in the brood war days they just used construction worker's hearing protection and had the earbuds under it for the sound.
the way is see it, this is just a sort of sponsorship/advertisement thing for razer, where everyone gets to see those neato headsets from them, and razer doesnt care much about if they are actually used. which they are seemingly don't. mabe they are just bogus, not even bringing sound at all but refitted with noise cancellation material instead of headphone speakers...

Earbuds are for actual sound from what I'm aware. The external headphones are more meant for the noise cancellation.

God damn, do I ever miss the old BW days.

From what I heard, the banshees actually are very poor when it comes to noise cancellation, so this is more of a promo move than anything else.

Yes that's true. But I am just wondering why they don't just plug in the sound plug of the Razer Banshee and just use the audio provided by that headset.
Maybe the players want the exact audio they are used to in practice?

its to better sound proof the booths if i remember correctly

The big headphones acts as earmuffs. Notice how no wire is connected to it?
Earbuds provide the actual sound.

Actually if you check the picture in the OP you will see that there is, in fact, a wire connected to the Razer headset.

Earbuds provide the actual sound. Witchcraft. :O How does it know when to change colour (player's APM) then.

It is plugged in because thats how the APM Technology™ works, whether or not they output sound is a different question >.>.

Liquid`Tyler said on a stream (IdrA's or Incontrol's viewing party of gstl) that there isn't any sound coming out of the headphones.

Koreans seem pretty meticulous when it comes to recreating their practice environment when on stage. Seems like the most logical reason.

Do those headphones/earmuffs have a particular brand attached to them? Could be a good spot for extra advertising.

They are part of Razer's SC2 line. I don't know what their relationship is with GSL, but they definitely make all the players wear them.

I am 99% sure that the earbuds would have far better noise cancellation than the headphones.
The thing that irks me is that it is most likely VERY uncomfortable to wear. I know its uncomfortable for me whenever something is pressing down on my earbuds/plugs.
