A friend of mine got his account banned because he allegedly used unauthorized third party software. The thing is, the only third party software the he uses is wine because he is a linux user...
He contacted blizz customer service but they claim that they were never able to reproduce false positive of their system detecting people using wine, and therefore refuse to change anything to his sanction which is a permaban of his account. On top of that they won't answer to any of his mails from now on! (keep it mind, it's the first time he has any problem with blizzard ...)
Well I know this is hard to prove that an account is legitimate, but here is the link to it:
http://eu.battle.net/d3/en/profile/Marmotte-2840/
He has played 80 hours since he bought the game, has crappy items and is not even in inferno yet, does that make any sense for it to be an account being used for botting/duping or whatever it is? (if he was botting he would have much more hours played). Unfortunately the email exchanged between blizz and him are in french, so a lot of you wouldn't understand it but basically they said that his case is closed and that he will never get his account back.
I find it absolutely disgusting, and I hope reddit can help, or maybe we can find other people who had the same problem.
PS: yeah great, just learned that he had the collector edition >_<.
TLDR: casual friend (80 hours played, not even in inferno yet, shitty gear) got his account perma banned because he played using on linux with wine, and was falsely detected by their cheating detection software. Blizzard claims that it's not the case, and won't answer to any of his mail from now on.
I don't know what I should do to help this guy (I post on his behalf because he doesn't use reddit or TL, and is just too disgusted by the way blizzard is handling this.

Blizzard's customer support is OK.
But honestly, they're idiots if they can do this.
Post this on Blizzard forums, maybe they'll do something about it.

Sucks...truly does...but I don't think blizzard will do anything to be honest but yes post on their forums. They are not the nicest of people :[

Posting on their forum won't help since the case is closed according to them, so all I will do is get banned myself I guess >_<. Anyhow, I'm trying to post this on reddit but I fucked up (tried to edit the post, deleted it and now reddit blocks me from submitting a thread..

Isn't this like...months old? There was a lot of complaints about Linux users back in like...June. And I'm pretty sure the accusations were severely overbown.
|
I would try to call customer support instead of trying to send them emails. It's easy for them not to give an explanation and just brush off your friend through email.

Yeah it already happened month ago, bashiok said that people who claimed that they were banned because they used linux were indeed all cheating, and that eventhough linux is not officially supported using wine won't make you banned. Except that it seems that it was not as simple (one link that I found on the subject: http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Banned-Diablo-3-Linux-Users-Speak-Out-We-Cheaters-44240.html), and Marmotte got banned this past week.
I know it's easy to dismiss this kind of thing by saying "of course, what a convenient excuse for a cheater, he was using wine". But really, if you have a look at his account it just doesn't make any sense to be an account used to cheating. The problem is that blizzard won't look at this, they have their technical system that tells them that he was cheating and won't go further than that . I think that's really a serious issue, as an avid sc2 player/ casual D3 player I know I will never buy or spend on anything blizzard related if it goes through.
edit:
I would try to call customer support instead of trying to send them emails. It's easy for them not to give an explanation and just brush off your friend through email. He already had them on the phone, he was told to send an e-mail to csfeedbackeu@blizzard.com , but he got the answer that that his case was double-checked and arrived to the same conclusions, therefore the sanction won't be changed and that any further inquiry about this problem will not be answered. (i'm translating from french to english).
This i why i try to post if on TL (and reddit when I'll can), because there is nothing he can do with blizzard apparently now .
edit: i added a post on reddit, if you don't mind upvoting it so that at least people can be aware of this issue: http://www.reddit.com/r/Diablo/comments/12ms7k/blizzard_permabanning_wine_user_falsely_detected/

Looks like people don't give a damn on reddit either, I'm just disgusted by the way blizzard is handling this, I will never spend a dime on blizzard products anymore. They lost 3 loyal customers with this. I was thinking about quitting sc2 completly, I think that it is it now.

Why does he have so many Elite-Kills on a level 52 character, seems a bit suspicious, just saying. (I dont know anybody who was (incorrectly) banned from any Blizzard-game and i've played pretty much every game in which one's bannable)
|
He played around 80 hours total and killed 2828 elites, so that's 0.58 elites/min. According to this thread on reddit http://www.reddit.com/r/Diablo/comments/12mgb3/divide_your_total_number_of_elite_kills_by_your/ the average for a diablo redditor is 0.82 elites/min so it's not that much. I think he probably farmed on nightmare and that's probably why he is "only" 52, should ask him though (he is playing casually and with terrible gear as you can see). If you have a look at his build you can see it's completly unoptimal.

Really? I hit paragon lvl 1 on my DH with under 1500 elite kills. Pretty sure my Monk was well under 2k as well.
Anyways, not to discredit what you're saying, but the entire Wine thing did happen back in WoW (Wine users being flagged and banned for 3rd party software). But all of those bans were reversed, so presumably they aren't having issues detecting if your using wine or something else.
The article you linked mentioned that this isn't a wine problem either (as lots of wine users are going just fine)...
Sorry you're disappointed in the lack of support for your accusations, but we don't know what your friend may or may not have been running to get flagged. And honestly, unless you watch him whenever he plays you don't know either.

He has 2200 kills on his lvl52 character. I know this guy, he sucks at games so he probably farmed nigthmare in the evening after work (he played solo). He never used the RMAH,has absolutely shitty gear and 1million gold. If you're going to bot gold or items you're going to be using better gear than what he has (keep in mind he had no access to his account since the ban so he couldn't change it). At least if you're going to bot you're going to use +gold or +magic find items...
The problem is that blizzard will not even let him defend himself: they consider that their cheat detection system cannot be wrong. They won't even discuss the fact that his account has not benefited in any form of cheating. Do you really think that's the way it should work, 2 standardized emails and cutting every contact between blizzard and yourself??? They also don't give exact information of what the infraction is: they just claim that he used an unauthorized third party software so it's really hard to defend yourself.
Anyway, apparently he is far from being the only to have this problem: http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/6008451767?page=3 + a lot of them on french community forum. For now blizzard keep the same stance... If you read french, link on the french bnet forum about the issue that explains it in detail: http://eu.battle.net/d3/fr/forum/topic/5848165859
The saddest thing is that the day after the banwave you had all the gold finding items that spiked in price on the AH because bots accounts were re-gearing themselves. These bans are not frequent enough to really prevent botting from being profitable,

Sorry for bumping this thread once again, but in the event where someone would have the same problem, here is a thread on playonlinux which centralize the configuration of people that were banned for using d3 on linux, so if you're one of them and read this thread please post your configuration here. http://www.playonlinux.com/en/topic-9679-Diablo_3_Ban_Information_Template.html
So far it looks like all of them are on ubuntu, but honestly that's not really helping since ubuntu is the most widespread distribution.
