I managed to find an FTP server that allowed me to download at 1.3 MB/s instead of the 20 kB/s on torrents :D.
I never played the original so I made some screenshots of my journey into the game:

Oh man I played up to the bit where you get the crowbar. Everything up to this was absolutely exceptional. They've added tons of new dialogue, the architecture is beautifully designed, the sound is very well made.
Playing on my 2.1 system with 160w sub at full, when the test sample machine was turned on, the rumbling started, you could feel the vibrations in your body, you could see the machine with spinning lights, I had to wait for a full minute or so before pushing the cart in. Because they'd made Black Mesa so much more alive, and just thinking that in a moment all of that will blow to shit.
Turn your textures to very high, those warnings won't be pixelated anymore  I'm positively surprised how high-res a lot of these objects are, probably because in these days' games if you see a small notepad you won't be expecting to be able to read any of the text.

I turned it up to very high but I still can't read them . It's probably a driver issue but oh well. Everything else looks pretty nice.

So I've gotten to the [infamous] blast pit. gonna stop there, starting to get motion sickness.
overall i cant believe how good this is. really. they could easily charge 30 bucks for this (but I know they obviously cant), the quality is just that high.

I managed to glitch and leave the map area by stacking barrels to jump inside a air vent that I thought was the current path. I actually feel scared sometimes when I turn a corner hearing some moans and see nothing, then the next corner has a head crab pop out of nowhere.

tip: If you don't like lengthy loading times you can try using the console command "cl_forcepreload 1" to force it to preload all the information.

Did anyone else get the shotgun in the level Office Complex? I'm going crazy trying to find it, cause I know you get the shotty in hl1 in that level.

Make sure you guys have disabled view bob, and set "view roll" to 0 (the settings are in the 'black mesa' tab of the settings). View roll in particular I think is probably the big culprit. I don't get motion sickness, but my wife does, so I'm familiar with the settings that are often to blame. I also reduced "view roll" on my system because the default value is really wobbly.

Since it's free, I'm thinking of getting it but I'm just wondering, would it better to wait for it on Steam? I heard it was coming out in about 2 days, with achievements and such. Maybe I'll play some of the original one since I still have the Half-Life Platinum Edition discs.

I love how some of these levels look, but...I can't stand the soldiers.
Yeah, they don't sound like robots anymore, but instead they sound...almost angsty. It's weird as hell.
What's worse, is they're absurdly difficult to deal with on hard difficulty...either you get a magnum headshot, or reload a save and surprise them with a grenade.
All of the xen critters / gaunts are a lot cooler (and tougher).

Well I'll be occupied this weekend due to WCS, but damn I'm really looking forward to finally playing this afterwards, I've waited way too many years :s

It is on steam, just that you can't download it on steam. You download it elsewhere, it installs into steam, complete w/ acheivements.

Favorite challenge I have is trying to keep as many scientists and security guards alive as possible on Hard Mode.
So far, managed to group up three security guards and a scientist in Office Complex before they hit impassable terrain (why can't they jump ). Haven't managed to find an area that can do more than that...
Managed to save the scientist that normally gets mowed down by the first turret in the game. Spent an hour trying to save these two idiot scientists that run into a crossfire shouting "Don't shoot! I'm the one who knows everything!". Managed to save them in the end, but no easter egg.
