Not because it's too hard, but because it's not fun. You can easily cheese them but it's more fun to have dynamic gunfights where stuff just happens.

The music when you get the hev suit is awesome, thinking of downloading the soundtrack for it.

I remember playing some source game, I want to say portal 1, and having my first run in with Havoc possessing proper momentum and marveling over how absurd it was that it 'felt wrong". Jumping in the tram when I first loaded black mesa up was the same thing in reverse. You know it took too long to make when we end of talking about how the remake that was supposed to modernize the old classic has engine mechanics that make it feel old.

Also those moments where something warps in right next to you and you reflexively empty half a clip of precious ammo into it before going FUCK, just a headcrab. That's the sort of feeling I love to get in games, just like you would IRL if you panicked and overreacted to something. One thing i dislike is the crowbar animation. It should really display a little cartoon *bop* every time you sock someone with it. It's adorable.

On the plus side, you can slap people with a bible. acceleration should not be a problem with shift pressed. And yeah you can't jump that high, but you don't have to. Do you know about "crouch jumping"? If not, that might help ^^

You can't do the safe "crouch + sneak", and just crouching makes it kill you immediately, even if you can't even hear yourself. Do you really need to use granades to get past it? I just got past that part and crouch sneaking worked perfectly fine for me (Complemented with grenades to pull its aggro onto a different floor than I am on)

The way down is easy, but getting back up without sneaking is annoying.

It's a lot harder than the original and the vortigaunts seem to fire at you a lot quicker. So do the marines.

It manages to recreate yet reinvent the original game keeping it fresh but nostalgic, whilst making it look absolutely gorgous and play like a dream. It's crammed with little easter eggs and extras and comes complete with achievements. Aside from missing the last 4 or so chapters, I can't imagine it being any better than it already is. It's a lot harder than the original and the vortigaunts seem to fire at you a lot quicker. So do the marines. You ever play the original game on hard? Vorts could 2-shot you basically. Not as hard as the original, at least not on hard settings.

That said, what should I start with? Is this episode one or two? Which expansions are relevant? How should I go about getting the best gameplay+storyline experience?

If you want to start playing the series, you could start with HL2, but you'd be missing out on one of the best PC FPS games ever made. HL Source (basically HL 1 with a few graphical improvements) for super cheap, go buy + play it.

HL Source (basically HL 1 with a few graphical improvements) for super cheap, go buy + play it. If you want to experience the full story I suggest playing the original Half Life first and then the expansions (Blue Shift and Opposing Force). Its basically the same story told from three different angles. After that you can play Black Mesa and after having played the original you will see why everyone is so excited about this mod. Then I would suggest playing Half-Life 2 followed by HL2: Episode 1 and 2. Half-Life Complete on Steam might be the best deal if you want the full experience. As a big fan of the series I'd say that its totally worth it. That being said with this mod being out you can also consider skipping the original. Blue Shift and Opposing Force are not really necessary for the story. The only problem right now is that Black Mesa is missing the last 4 chapters as of now. There is also a really good website if you want to learn more about the whole story but my advice is to visit this page after having played the games: http://members.shaw.ca/halflifestory/ Feel free to ask any more questions that might come up. Edit: (just my opinion) Dont play half-life source, better go with the original, half-life source is basically the same game just with better looking water, worse movement and longer load times.
