Interesting. I'll be curious to hear what you think about it.

This is so extremely impressive :O
Just got to the crowbar (which was placed far later than in the original, had me scared that I had somehow missed it), and so far the game is a blast. The attention to detail, the production value, it's all staggering. I just hope it can keep this level of quality up for the rest of the game.

yea same i thought i missed it, using the flares was pretty jokes though lol. There is so much detail and the environment is awesome I'm liking it better then hl2

What you also can do vs motion sickness, is setting the FoV higher. It will look less like a tunnel then.I get motion sickness from a too low FoV.

Yeah, they don't sound like robots anymore, but instead they sound...almost angsty. It's weird as hell.
What's worse, is they're absurdly difficult to deal with on hard difficulty...either you get a magnum headshot, or reload a save and surprise them with a grenade.
All of the xen critters / gaunts are a lot cooler (and tougher).
I actually like the difficulty in this game. If you set hl1 on hard, it's about as the same difficulty. You just can't handle the 1998 "hard" anymore. New games are all way too simple most of the time.

I play through HL1 on hard once a year probably and Black Mesa is definitely harder. The soldiers are much quicker to shoot you so it's hard to get any damage in without taking a lot yourself. I find the MP5 useless against them because it takes too long to kill them whereas in HL1 it worked fine.

To be fair even games with a reasonably hard option these days have gotten better about having...not sure what the right word is quite, but "smoother" mechanics making them hard.
I was actually a bit disappointed in the change to the vortigaunts. Their attack was somewhat of an important detail and black mesa did away with it making them instead shoot just like any other enemy. It is the soldiers who seem improved from the old days thanks to the better AI, though the voice acting does make them seem as overused comic relief.
I'm in the embarrassing situation of being stuck on a simple puzzle. I just went off the rails after the rocket launch and there do not seem to be enough floating barrels to make this broken catwalk rise sufficiently to be crossed. Come on sprinting crouch jump...noooooooooo.

Im getting some micro stutter and frame drops, ehh still fun as hell!

My only complaint (and this is super minor) is they changed the sound when you get health from those wall packs. It feels watered down a bit from the distinctly epic/relieving sound from hl1/2, I was all excited to use one for the sound and was disappointed haha.

Nothing matches Valve sound designers, and they obviously didn't want to just copy stuff

Finished it today, was waaay longer than I thought it to be. That said, the end did catch me by suprise.
Overall enjoyable, though I didn't like how autoaimish the soldiers were, I think most it simply comes from that there's no hit reaction. Most modern games have targets stagger or flinch when you hit 'em. Also, 3 headshots with the pistol for a kill seems excessive.
Brought back the good 'ol Half life feel atleast, really good work

I'm such a huge Half-Life fanboy and I've been following progress on this remake for so long that having finally played it has brought me out of lurker mode. So, first post!
I've now played Black Mesa up to the start of "Power Up", and in short it's a frankly staggering achievement. One of the things that immediately struck me is how varied the NPC models are - you don't often see two scientists, security guards or HECU troopers that look exactly alike. The music can be a bit overzealous or out of place at times but broadly I really like that, too. My only real semi-criticism up to this point is that it's maybe a little bit easy? Having said that I've completed HL1 so many times that it becomes a real factor when it comes to difficulty.
Having said that, though, the subtle changes that the team have made throughout the chapters I've played so far make the game significantly more surprising than "just a remake" of the original game.

I never played the original so I made some screenshots of my journey into the game: Interesting. I'll be curious to hear what you think about it. Wot I Think:
I will assume that outside of graphics and a few differences, it is pretty much exactly the same as Half Life 1. What I have encountered so far is pretty decent. The story is interesting enough that I want to actually hear it. The game have a good "atmosphere" about it. I walk around and explore all the little things in the beginning that make me laugh over something stupid in a way other games haven't in a long time; when I discovered you could lift trashcans and books, the first thing I did was put one over someone's head. Often I find myself in a small empty room and I'm actually scared to continue; the occasion zombie moan causes me to expect another one around the next corner.
Now being realistic, this is a linear FPS story. There are many doors with security locks that I wish I could enter just because I am curious. You will walk into a room from one door, and there will be only one exit. But the thing is, it doesn't feel like a linear corridor shooter. There is never a time where I walk somewhere I'm not supposed to and have the game tell me I shouldn't be there, like I've seen in COD. Enemies appear in scripted areas, but not so obviously that one will materialize out of nowhere. Having not played before, the enemies do surprise me when they suddenly burst out a vent.
The game is actually difficult which is nice since I've been so jaded that many modern games try to hold your hand and make things painfully easy. I'm playing on normal difficulty and I dip down as low as 25 occasionally since I do something stupid. I heard from others that later enemies actually have weapons and are very accurate with them. There aren't any ridiculous puzzles that can only be solved with the use of a guide which is nice.
All in all, the game is refreshing compared to some modern games and I can definitely see why many people enjoy the series and are hoping for HL3 (it's never happen).

It's great to hear from someone completely new to the game that they think it is good too. It's hard for us to judge without bias, because our opinion is clouded by nostalgia.

I found a better secret:
|
It plays just as HL1 which is great! And yes soldiers has ridicoulous aim, needed several reloads on hard dif :p
|
I'm in chapter 9 atm and for the last hour I've seen the gman more times than I have seen a health pack lol...
|
Torrent option seems pretty good atm. I'm getting 1.6 Mb/s. So go for it. And seed while u watch DH.
edit. also I have both DH streams on so who knows how fast it could be.

I really dig how if you actually save the scientists and security guys, some of them will give you stuff. It's great incentive. I got up to blast pit tonight, tomorrow who knows! Great game, and although I've beat half life 1 about 3 times, I still find this game highly enjoyable.
