Hello,

I recently sent my videocard rma, because it was giving me black screens. Now the store doesn't have the same card in stock so they offered me a newer version.
The old card was: R9 280 3GB
The new one: R9 380 4GB

Should i agree with this? or am i getting tricked

Thanks in advance.

It's probably better to have the 380 if the card itself and cooler is of comparable/better quality.

Hey guys, going to microcenter today since my friend wants to buy a gaming pc, his budget is $1000 including monitor/accessories and doesn't need oc. I haven't kept up with the latest stuff, so can someone give me a brief rundown of current gen before we go?

Try to get a 6600k(+z170, ddr4) if it's cheap or if not, an i5-4xxx with a cheap board and ddr3.

You can get an fx-63xx or fx-83xx if it saves a lot of money beyond that even on CPU and you're tight for budget, but they're a lot worse for some games (bad singlethreaded performance so very bad for many mmo, rts games and some others). They were very bad at those things 3 years ago when they got released but prices keep dropping so it's still worth a mention

For GPU on nvidia side, 950 and 960 are very close (like 15% performance gain). After that there's a huge (~65%) performance gap to 970. A 4GB r9 380 is a pretty good choice if affordable (between 960 and 970, probably closer to 970).

do not buy a samsung 840 or 840 evo SSD

can't think of much more stuff at the moment and can't really price things in my head accurately (especially with microcenter prices)

It has firmware issues. Possibly fixed, possibly not. They perform badly with such issues. I think that the 850 should be OK though.

Go with Crucial MX200 (I think it's that?), which is equivalent but without any issues.

Microcenter usually has several of their higher end CPUs as much as $100 cheaper as competitors (must buy in store, limit 1 iirc). It's easily the best deal you can find, so I'd recommend picking one of those.

On September 30 2015 04:00 B.I.G. wrote:

Those specific models had an issue where performance would degrade over time. People eventually found that defragging would actually effectively restore the drive back to it's original performance, though ofc that adds a number of writes to the SSD which has a relatively limited number of them (though still a very large number).

I'm not sure if they still do or if it was fixed. Other Samsung SSDs are generally in the top tier of quality.

I already have a pretty large case so that won't be needed. Is there anything I should swap out in favor of something better? Honestly I am just looking for the best performance/price ratio (But obviously on the high end of the spectrum).

Performance degrades over a relatively short period of time due to a hardware defect, samsung's idea of a fix is telling users to re-write all of the data on their SSD's every month or so with increasing frequency. Their warranties are also based around the amount of data that you have written to your SSD

build looks good though it would have been nice to get better graphics card (but that's the easiest thing to replace and get a 2-4x upgrade in like a year if wanted)

Looks pretty solid overall! I'm probably not a fan of the choice of your PSU but it should still be more than fine.

Yeah actually your CPU and motherboard aren't compatible. I don't have a lot experience with LGA 2011 builds so I can't really recommend a good motherboard. I think going for a 6 core Haswell processor probably isn't a bad idea, considering your needs and budget.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=lga 2011-v3&N=-1&isNodeId=1

As for your power supply, get something like this instead. Again I'm not 100% familiar with 2011 power usage but this should be more than sufficient (high quality 650W psu):

Your SSD pick and graphics card pick could probably be better. I'd get a Crucial MX200 and also a graphics card from MSI or Gigabyte, with a real cooler on it (rather than a not-so great blower style cooler).

Looks like my friends gonna upgrade to the 970, and I'm thinking about buying the 960 from him to upgrade the 460. Would the power consumption change significantly? I have a corsair 430W.

So I've determined I need to or want to upgrade my computer parts (CPU and Graphics Card).

What is your current build?
Intel Core i5 2400 (LGA 1155)
Sapphire Radeon HD6870
Patroit 2x4GB 1600MHz (ram)
Asrock H61M-VS (motherboard)
Rosewill Capstone 450W (Power Supply)

What is your monitor's native resolution?
2x 1920x1080

Why do you want to upgrade? What do you want to achieve with the upgrade?
I'd mainly like to upgrade my CPU and graphics card so I can stream in better quality and record gaming videos. My parts are starting to get outdated anyway I guess.

What is your budget?
I don't really know what is reasonable for this but I wouldn't want to pay more than like $650 if possible.

What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA
If you have any brand or retailer preferences, please specify.
Newegg works great for me and I'd prefer to buy my stuff there.

Right now I'm looking at this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116987
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132120
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127860

Would these 3 work and then I can use my current Monitors, HDD+SSD etc?
Should I look into replacing just about everything (and spending more obviously).

Halp. I'm lost
If you need more info Lemme know.

The 960 uses LESS power than the 460 :D

From what little I follow power consumption is one of the big improvements that NVIDIA has been making in the last few years (especially from the 5xx to 6xx series iirc)

@SnowFantasy

You should probably get i5 (either 4xxx to be cheaper or the current gen+unlocked 6600k to be more powerful)

clock speed and performance per clock improvements matter more than hyperthreading; even when hyperthreading is well utilized like for video encoding, a 6600k at 4.5ghz would be 10% or so faster than a 4790 at stock. When it's not well utilized (many games) that lead would increase to ~25%

--------

From what little I follow power consumption is one of the big improvements that NVIDIA has been making in the last few years (especially from the 5xx to 6xx series iirc)

Efficiency has improved a lot, but that's generally how graphics cards improve their performance. We have the same approximate power windows (~300w for high end) and every gen is just improving efficiency, but still using 300w. If it's twice as efficient with the same power, it'll be twice as fast. We saw that every gen for a long time now

The power for a midrange or a high end GPU hasn't really changed that much - part of it is deceptive naming. Back in the 200-500 series days, a 970 would have never been called a 970. It would be a gts450 or maybe a 460.

+ Show Spoiler +
The direct replacements for the 280/480/580 (780ti, 980ti - the big chips of their generation) are just as power hungry and you see the same thing on the AMD side as well (290x, Fury X). The main difference there is that people confuse 670-680, 970-980 for flagships because of the new naming scheme and AMD being a bit behind Nvidia to allow for that naming scheme to happen (as the new "flagship" is as fast as the fastest thing available from competitor, even if there's something 1.4 - 1.8x faster that can be released soon after)

960 is half a 980, that 120w power rating is probably actually on the high side of what it would/could use

Hello Guys
I'm not sure if it was said before but at the moment if one (that one being me) would like to get best cpu/mobo/ram combo for SC2 mainly(maybe some other more demanding games in the future) should i get I5 6600/ I7 6700 or stick to Intel Core i7-4790K ?? Both will be OC'ed.

I fiddled around on scan.co.uk and configured a build :
3XS Custom 1151

6600k and 6700k are notably faster than haswell i5/i7 and yes sc2 is included in that. About 8-12% effective performance i guess at the same clock speed (FPS rises by like 14-15% but sc2 FPS doesn't accurately represent the game performance). 3000c15 ddr4 RAM is fine, i got 3200c16 though since it seemed slightly better bin at just a little price increase.

I don't recommend paying for Scan OC, you can OC manually. Especially with Skylake CPU, it's easier. I also have the VIII Hero and there's some boards out there that are a bit wonky or missing settings (particularly from MSI and Gigabyte, though there are not a lot of people with other boards in the OCN skylake thread) while it seems i chose one of the best motherboards, though at a price hike of maybe £50 over entry-level. The main problem with those boards, though a few miss settings like fclk is the lack of or woefully ineffective LLC - some people drooping from 1.4 to 1.33v for example on the best that they can do on the board while a VIII Hero has 8 levels of LLC and the most effective one (slight droop but hardly any) is level 4 or 5.

------

A custom water cooling loop would be great for cooling, but they're really expensive, a pain to set up and maintain and you kinda have to buy a bunch of components like the pump, radiators, tubing, coolant, fans etc seperately and assemble them all. That's more of an enthusiast hobby thing that's not cost for performance effective at all, it's just good at cooling.

Closed-loop liquid coolers (like you have selected) are easy to use but perform worse, especially the smaller ones. A h100i will not outperform the stronger air coolers - they actually lose to the bigger air coolers for both performance/£ and performance at lower noise levels, being rather expensive and using very loud fans when those fans have to ramp up.

They're still a fairly good and popular choice being quite small, less reliant on case airflow to work well (you can mount one on the top of your case and suck air through it from outside of your case, so the internal case temperatures won't kill your CPU temperatures), some people like the asthetics better etc. Just don't convince yourself that they're a performance miracle, because they're not really (: They cool well, but so do the good air coolers.

-----

Temperatures are not a big problem for Skylake. I have a 6700k and a silver arrow at the moment using 1300rpm fans - at 1.38vcore while encoding with 100% CPU load until temperature completely level off, my CPU core temperatures peak at 64-69c depending on the room temperature. I'd have to use very very uncomfortable voltages to even threaten hitting 80c.

I went from ~78-80c at 1.29vcore to ~66c at 1.385vcore when i changed from a 4770k to a 6700k, for reference. Same room, same cooler.

Overclock + stability testing is included as standard free of charge with scans setups. And they guarantee an OC of 4.6.

So would u say to go for the best i can buy air cooler ?? what would you recommend

So how does your setup (I am assuming you have been using 6700 for a while performs with SC2 ? )
do you still drop below 60 fps in maxxed engagements ??

They cannot do that without pre-testing CPU's and giving you a certain one. If they do it like www.overclockers.co.uk does it, they guarantee that you won't get one of the worst chips out there (average OC on OCN is ~4.66ghz at 1.37v) but also probably that you won't get a great one - as they likely sell those seperately for an increased price or only in certain builds. I prefer to buy CPU's in their box with the intel factory seal on them for that reason, unless i'm buying a chip which performs way above average for volts vs clocks.

So how does your setup (I am assuming you have been using 6700 for a while performs with SC2 ? )
do you still drop below 60 fps in maxxed engagements ??

Everybody does It just takes more and more to do it with a more powerful CPU and fast RAM.

Due to the way the sc2 engine works, even when it says 100fps, you'll have frames taking 1/60'th of a second and visible performance drop on a 60hz monitor. That's because 20 times per second, the CPU does a ton of work simulating everything that happens in the game and the frame that comes after that takes much longer than the previous frames, so you get 20 frames in every second that take way, way longer than the FPS average would have you expecting.

Here's a pic of what that looks like, with every blue dot being a frame.

In this situation the average FPS is as high as 100-120, yet a bunch of frames still take about 1/60'th of a second.

Here's a comparison benchmark between a stock Haswell i5 (around 3.7ghz) with low end DDR3 against OC'd Skylake (4.6ghz) with moderately fast DDR4. Blue = me, orange = stock haswell i5.

I also edited the picture to cut out the fast frames and show only the ones that happen on game ticks, as they're what really matter for percieved performance:

damn those are some sick graphs right there so all in all SC2 engine is kinda bad and we have to roll with it.

hopefully 1 more question regarding new setups any cases i should look up to ? i tried to google stuff like best mid/full tower cases 2015 but they all bring different results and my head hurts ;P

so far i came up with Vengeance® C70 or
Carbide Series Air 240
Arctic White High Airflow

(i'm keen on a white case because ascetics
