When using this resource, please read the opening post. The Tech Support forum regulars have helped create countless of desktop systems without any compensation. The least you can do is provide all of the information required for them to help you properly. |
Hi dudes
Well, I need a laptop *and* a desktop. And my budget is $2000 for them together. But let's say just the desktop, $1000. Unless you guys recommend splitting up my budget a different way
1920 x 1080. If a new monitor was better and still cheap I might consider getting a new monitor
No games in particular, but I probably will game. Nice graphics are fun and I like them, but not a priority.
Programming, other school work
Probably not?
Should I? I had a computer with crossfire back when it was new and it didn't seem that great back then.
Yes, I do. I want windows.
I don't *need* a new monitor but if it fit well in the budget then sure. I might even go slightly over budget for it?
No preferences. I guess I would like a SSD hard drive since I care more about speed than storage. And quiet is nice.
I live in the U.S. but I would buy from anywhere reliable

he just wants a good PSU that he can transfer over to a different build later on (something that can support a high quality comp). the main thing he wants is an i7 cpu, a good psu and a good tower.. but i dunno if it's possible to fit a good i7 into his budget. the mobo isnt really important seeing as he's most likely gonna have to buy a new one in the future anyways (assuming he wants to build a high quality gaming rig).
i know that NCIX has price matching, are there any good deals available that we can build off of?

"i7" doesn't really mean fast, it describes a feature set (in some confusing ways).
There are several CPU's. i5 is 4 core, some i7 is 4 core + hyperthreading and some others are last gen, 6 slower cores + hyperthreading. Hyperthreading improves performance in some loads but not all, it doesn't help performance in sc2 at all for example.
Depending on your workload, with infinite budget you'd want either current gen 4 core + HT i7 or last gen 6 core + HT i7 (more cores but slower cores)
3 choices listed in order i'd suggest i guess
1; get a 6600k/6700k. Since z170 is the only motherboards available so far, you'd have to buy one and might as well get good one. These CPU's don't ship with a stock heatsink but is OCable if you buy one.
2; get a 5820k, slower cores but more of them. Good for some stuff, bad for others. Not much more expensive than a 6700k. Doesn't come with a heatsink but is overclockable.
3; get a locked last gen CPU with a cheaper mobo (no OC capability, bit worse performance even at stock, cheaper stuff). Ships with stock heatsink, works fine with it (if it's like an i5-4670)
there's no reason for an 850w PSU unless you want multiple flagship GPU's because that's 200-300 watts overkill for overclocking flagship parts (6700k, 980ti / furyX)

What is your budget?
~3200 USD
What is your monitor's native resolution?
1080p 75hz atm. I'm going to buy the 1440p 165hz Asus when it comes out in October. If it's pushed back into next year, i'll settle for a 1440p 144hz Gsync
What games do you intend to play on this computer? What settings?
Battlefield 4 Star Wars Battlefront CSGO LoL SC2 WoW Path of Exile
1440p 165fps on Medium to Ultra settings. Maintaining 165fps is the most important part to me. I'll get another 980 TI if I'm dropping settings too low for my taste
What do you intend to use the computer for besides gaming?
Streaming, possibly. Nothing other than that
Do you intend to overclock?
Yes
Do you intend to do SLI / Crossfire?
Yes, either SLI down the road or upgrade to Pascal depending on the performance and release date. I'll SLI right away if I feel like I have to turn the graphics settings down too low to maintain 165fps
Do you need an operating system?
No
Do you need a monitor or any other peripherals and is this part of your budget?
I'm looking to buy the 1440p 165hz Asus monitor coming out next month, this is part of the budget
If you have any requirements or brand preferences, please specify.
I'll occasionally plug the computer into a 4k tv, so I guess DisplayPort on the mobo?
What country will you be buying your parts in?
USA
If you have any retailer preferences, please specify.
No

I'm aiming for the Samsung 950 Pro SSD coming out in October, as well as the Asus ROG Swift PG279Q monitor.
I don't know anything about motherboards. I want support for two graphics cards, a soundcard, mouse and keyboard, one monitor, and an m.2 SSD; plus 4k 60hz and 1440p 165hz display support.
Also, I'm willing to pay a little extra on the mobo if it means I'll squeeze out another MHz or two on the overclock.
Thank you for your time !!!

Hey guys I made a post here a few months ago and Cyro helped me out finding a good budget PC (which was really really helpful). Well I still haven´t got one yet because money is the limiting factor here but thats another story that doesn´t belong here. But I searched around a bit and found this one: https://de.pcpartpicker.com/guide/hGj48d/399-bang-for-buck-pc-build-intel-g3258gtx-750ti A friend on Steam told me this is a great Computer for a budget PC so I wanted to hear your opinion too. What do you guys think?

It really depends on what games you wish to run and what settings-resolutions you expect. If a pc does not fulfil your need it does not matter if it's cheap or not.
The downside to g3258 is it's a dual core cpu and some of the latest games are refusing to run on dual cores, examples: dragon age inq, far cry 4. Some other games are having performance problems on dual cores. The cheapest alternative that won't have that problem is an i3.
gtx 750ti is ok if you are not expecting high graphics on a 1080p monitor. Low graphics or lower resolution would be smoother.
https://de.pcpartpicker.com/guide/XCwrxr/399-bang-for-buck-pc-build-intel-i3-4160gtx-750ti?show=1 take a look at this one, except swap out the i3 4160 with a 4170.

Hi there, right now I have a GTX 660 TI from Gainward www.gainward.com and I want to switch to GTX 970 Phantom from Gainward www.gainward.com
I searched through the internets and it looks like GTX 970 requires the same power, but I am not sure about the Phantom edition since it is OC. Have these cards the same power consumption or is better for me to buy a generic 970?
Thanks!

Well I am in desperate need for a new PC because my current one seems to be slowly dieing mostly because of its age. The games I would be playing are SC II, Payday 2 and maybe Serious Sam 3 and a lot of old games. These are the only "modern" games I have. If I can play this games at mid/high settings with a smooth framerate I would be totally satisfied. I wouldn´t play on the highest resolution anyway, I´ve never been a graphics whore that needs everything on Ultra. My current PC is giving me a lot of problems lately. I can´t play Payday 2 because the screen goes black and the sound stutters after a few minutes and I have to do a Hard reset(This only happened twice while doing other stuff but never when its idle). It seems to be totally random and I don´t know what cause it. I believe its a problem with my CPU because if I want to watch streams in High Quality the CPU gets insanely hot like 100° C. If you want to look what my current specs are look here: http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/tech-support/426532-computer-build-upgrade-and-buying-resource-thread?page=492#9831 As you can see my Rig is ancient. I made a mistake and didn´t upgrade it when I still could. And Cyro said nothing of the parts are salvagable which makes this even tougher for me.
So this would definetly be an upgrade for me and fulfill my needs(and besides gaming I would only use it for the ususal surfing and stuff don´t plan anything fancy with it). The budget is the most important here because Im really broke at the moment. Oh and sorry if this was a bit Off-Topic but I really need advice on this.

So i just spent like 12 hours switching motherboards
Fuck, don't even know where to start
USB non-functional past the bios without some kind of pre-windows driver. No way to install windows via usb or via usb-connected external disc reader. No way to access that pre-windows driver if it's on anything connected via USB.
Sata doesn't work properly without drivers either. Would NOT read the asus motherboard dvd correctly (got entirely stuck on many small files, couldn't get any driver from it or the main program install because of that) so even after i borrowed a sata disc reader from someone i could not make the system operational.
In the end i literally had to use two PC's, take PC-2 and read the asus driver disc (which was perfectly fine) and then copy the files and write them to a 700MB CD. That's the only way i found to actually get files onto the system with internet of any kind and USB completely non functional and sata only partially functional.
Finally got the ethernet driver, grabbed a ton of stuff and went to the website to get drivers for USB (to remove the half-second mouse lag, nonfunctional scroll wheel, system freeze on every mouse click) and THE WEBSITE DRIVER SECTION IS BROKEN AND COMPLETELY INACCESSIBLE
I assumed the Hero wouldn't be completely shit at stuff like this and got burned for it. This is just amazing, i took a trip back to the 90's for a whole night and morning (800x600 screen resolution, system not responding for 90 seconds at a time when trying to read a file)
In other news, skylake temps are very surprising. My stock voltage is also 1.31 @4ghz, 1.41 at 4.2ghz turbo and it looks like i can do 4650mhz or so on the core at 1.4v.
|
Damn that kind of sucks. It's as if you got a driver-less motherboard.
At least it's working now. ^^"

Partially.

By good temps, i mean like.. 1.4v with HT on, sustained 100% load with x264 peaking 62-65c.
I'm using 0.1v more (bios and sensors) than Haswell (4770k) while being 15c cooler at the same time.

with a 520 watt seasonic you shouldn't have any power problems. If you are asking about electric bill, oc vs non oc is negligible. no problems, grab the 970.

If you plan on running reference clocks only (so ~1250mhz, not ~1500mhz) then reference card can be a good idea. The factory OC cards often (or even usually) use much higher stock voltages. It's not a huge problem, just lower power and a bit less performance on ref cards if you take it out of the box and tweak nothing
|
That sounds like a rough time Cyro, you got a better Asus mobo than me (z170-a) and all I had to do was put the ethernet driver on a USB stick and plug it in after installing Windows without issues and then proceed from there. Sweet overclock though with those temperatures.
My chip does stock turbo at 1.28v @ around 65c. My cooler isn't exactly high end, but I never intended to overclock and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it without replacing it anyways.

There are a few different sensors and it can be confusing, i was going from the "Vcore" in hwinfo (www.hwinfo.com) because VID jumps around all over the place. On auto voltage and full stock settings i actually got some spikes to 1.45vcore.
Since stock volts are already high and those temps are cool, you can just tweak values and OC. You can very likely run 4.5ghz without adding more than ~4-6c or so - i was able to boot 4725mhz and run for a minute (and 4.6ghz for an hour+, i stopped test) when changing no values other than Vcore, core multiplier and setting LLC to level 5, super ezmode.
4.5ghz semi-optimized bench run: + Show Spoiler +
Haswell needed about 4.9 to do that so a fair IPC improvement but not Skylake's biggest. I know i can hit 200 single core @4.5 but it takes a little while to do each test and it might need a little tweaking :D
edit: DERP i don't even have avx instructions enabled performance was still that much better than Haswell on cine, x264 and sc2 though. Not sure how much cine and x264 benefit from them but my temps will go up a bit, especially in the super-avx-heavy loads.
edit2: I had avx enabled during my initial testing, that's probably why i was confused. My temperatures were still similar (maybe a few degrees hotter) and x264 performance was up a decent amount, like maybe 5%. I'l test it exactly some time soon and probably post a benchmark thread

Didn't reply to this earlier because you're pretty bang on, there are some changes but it's mostly picky stuff.
* I'm not a particular fan of the evga 980ti
* case isn't particularly airflow focused, it has a big door on the front (choking the front fan airflow) and sound dampening stuff that won't really come into play when you have to turn up your GPU fans and make even more noise because they're starved for airflow and the case temperature is going up. I think performance vs quietness is relevant here (with one GPU + overclock but especially with two) and that case is leaning towards the quietness side.
* http://www.overclock.net/t/1455892/why-you-might-not-want-to-buy-a-corsair-rm-psu/0_30
* There's another RAM bin for slightly more expensive, ~3200c16 at the same 1.35v. Worth getting IMO. It's a bit faster, but after that there's a huge price hole because aparantly ddr4 does not properly support cas17 so the options go from 3200c16 to suddenly 3600c18 at much higher prices
I don't feel that the mobo would limit your OC at all. I looked into it some (and the uefi's, available options, performance) before buying that exact board. Just make sure you have a sata cd/dvd reader so that you can actually install windows on it.

Thank you for your reply!
Howcome you're not a fan of the EVGA 980TI? What would you recommend instead?
Thank you for informing me about the case. That makes sense; you lose some or maybe all of the extra quietness because you have to turn the fans up. Performance is more important to me anyways, I don't know much about the different cases. I've done and continue to do some reading, but there sure are a lot of options!
Which airflow focused case(s) would you recommend, with quietness not being a factor? The case size doesn't matter to me, provided I can fit the mobo and everything else in
Thank you for informing me about the PSU! I'll be certain to change the brand!
Thank you, I will definitely go for the 3200c16 ram!
Thank you very much for your reply!
Thank you very much for your reply, I will certainly look into different PSUs!
