About me - I'm a player from SEA who can play 3 servers (SEA/NA/Kr). I do not like SEA, as I have to wait too long for a game and the player pool is so small. I don't mind NA but I get bm'ed too much too enjoy the games. My preferred server is Korea, after playing Korea for a long time I could not enjoy the practice on NA the same. So right now, I just want to play on Korea! :D
I've had computer issues before (the last thread I posted a while ago now was regarding that), but internet was not a problem. I have a new computer now, so I was expected to not only be able to stream but play every server when doing so. 2 months before I obtained my computer however, my Korean client started to lag. The lag is not delay either, my delay for each server has been the same for a year now:
SEA: 90ms to 110ms
NA: 250ms to 290ms
KR: 260ms to 300ms
and even though I do not play EU, I get 340MS there.
which is surprisingly good for an Australian internet provider (we all know how.. shit Australian internet is.)
The lag I am experiencing is the dreaded spike. Out of nowhere, Korea went from Smooth with noticeable (but manageable delay) to random lag spikes every 2 to 8 seconds, meaning I can not predict when the lag will occur making it even harder for things like ZvZ haha.
The lag persisted, but since I was not playing much due to my computer, I was not able to get solid information about when the lag occurs less, occurs more or even find a time it didn't. In the last week I have been able to document when it lags:
Saturday: Spikes badly at 6am, spikes badly at 7pm
Sunday: Spikes badly at 5am, no lag spikes at 4pm (??)
Monday: no lag spikes all day
Tuesday: no lag spikes at 7am~, lag spikes at 10pm onwards (to now when I message)
As you can see, at least recently, it fluctuates between lagging and not lagging. This means I do not have a solid time to ladder, and I can never go into a day knowing I won't lag.
I contacted my provider, Internode, and they were very polite and decently helpful. What they and the gamer forum (games.on.net) they directed me to said was that I should post tracert/pingtest results. I knew this only showed my delay, and not lag spikes, but I posted it anyway. I was able to get minimal help. My father told me that I use cable, whereas he uses the wireless router. I'm not sure how this works exactly, but my plug goes into the wall is all i know :D
Possible reasons for why this is happening are:
- Someone told me that the Hong Kong exchange (closest to Korea for internode) either went down or decreased in quality. I asked them and got no response, and I did not find a thread using Google regarding that.
- If I actually do use the router - the router broke 2 months ago. I don't mean legitimately broke, but the antenna on the Router requires tape to stay in place, and does not stay straight easily.
- Quality of Service has suddenly decreased. This is the least likely of the 3 options, as my NA and SEA servers work perfectly (although I do experience lag on NA sometimes, but that's due to my brother downloading/streaming at the same time, and since NA is further away I assume it's normal for lag to occur).
Just before when the latest lag spikes occured, I figured that perhaps my opponent could have been clashing with me (He was a Taiwanese opponent, i'm from Australia, we are playing on a neutral server etc etc.) so then I tested with a couple of friends and the lag was the same.
It's a good sign that Korea can work at all (like this morning) but with the lag still there I am trying to find a reason. Here is some juicy information about my set up and all that:
Problem started occuring: October, only on Korea
ISP: Internode
Router: Billion (wireless) (will get model name if needed)
Location: Adelaide, Australia
Jitter (using Pingtest) : 0ms to Sea, 2ms to NA, 2ms to Korea (once got 11ms though)
Ping: 32
