Just bought the mechanical keyboard. And... I got mixed feelings about it. Everything's fine exept keys are way too high and it somehow limits my precision and overall it just feels wierd and uncomfortable. Like pressing Cntr+* is already a problem. Plus, keyborad itself is high and i have to position my palm above it so... ah don't know how to explain it right but may be somebody get what i'm trying to say? Any1 got this problem or is it just me? May be it's a matter of habbit? any thoughts? It's just a matter of getting used to, my friend wears headphones left side on right because he somehow managed to get used to it. But that's not just different, it's worse because it screws up a lot of stuff like positional audio in games (you hear somebody ~5 meters to the left and 1 meter back.. but surprise, he's in a completely different place) Ever since he started playing fps games he somehow managed to wear them the wrong way and he hears just fine, maybe his brain has rewired.
I seriously doubt that, when i first got my siberias a few years back (for some unknown reason) the sound came out wrong e.g left side sounding like stuff was happening on my right side and vice versa, wouldnt surprise me if he got the same issue. You can change that in the sound options.

My filco majestouch just stopped working entirely ;_;

Quick question ... the replaceable keys of different mech keyboards aren't stadardized right ... meaning I can't buy a few keys if something breaks and just replace it. I will have to make sure it's from the same manufacturer?
|
The normal keys will usually all work. The issue is with the Space Bar and the other large keys. There's two general styles of "stabilizers" for those, one designed by Cherry themselves and an alternative by Costar and maybe some more. There's also the possibility for the exact position of the switch being in a different place for the large keys.

Thanks for the info. For some reason I thought that there were different "heights" between the manufacturers so that you have to buy the replacement keys from your keyboard's manufacturer or else things might be "off".

To an extent, I suppose? There are different profiles (angle/depth of the "cup"/height/etc) and sizes but it's usually mentioned a) what are your keyboards key cap specs b) the intended keycaps specs. To answer your question, no but you ought to make sure the profile of the cap and the size of the modifiers matches.
Some profiles (quite a few, actually) have row specific order but it isn't the end of the world if they don't match (blank keys that is, printed ones obviously go where they're supposed to)
I haven't come across any profiles that wouldn't fit a keyboard but having different profile key caps here and there break the "cohesion" #justocdthings

Great info! You guys are really helpful.

Is Corsair's mechanical keyboards in general good? I'm interested in picking up a RGB K95 because they look so awesome
|
So apparently a keyboard can be dirtier than a toilet seat. I took a peek between the key crevices and see dust, hair, and dandruff accumulating. How do I go about cleaning it? Use the wire tool that came with my Ducky Shine 3 and yank off every key and blow on it? Seems like a lot of work -.-;;
Can I just run it through the dishwasher like another TLer did and hope for the best? (He said his keyboard still worked afterward). Seems like a quick and easy solution (too good to be true?). Then again mine is a backlit keyboard, so idk.

It may work, it may not work. It generally isn't a good idea to throw it in the dishwasher unless you have another $100 to spare. But even if you did throw it in the dishwasher, you'd still want to remove every individual keycap for a thorough cleaning.

My main keyboard is a K70 MX Red. It's very good and makes for much easier cleaning than my previous Zowie Celeritas. I had some trouble ordering the keyboard though because I wanted a Nordic Layout and the people at Corsair thought I had mis-ordered and made me confirm the purchase via live telephone chat. Keep in mind that if you do order a non-English layout keyboard, it might take a while to ship (mine came from Denmark according to the tracking). This may or may not invoke import taxes.

If your keyboard is expensive and means a lot to you, I would spend some time pulling the caps off and cleaning it thoroughly with q-tips and alcohol, which is a lot cheaper than replacing your board.

Hopefully Swedish retailers will start listing it (it took some time before Devil's Canyon processors was listed), which should make everything easier. And even if not, Corsair will probably notice that I'm Swedish when ordering a Nordic layout

Looks like there's no shortcut and pulling off all the keycaps is the way to go. Guess I'll treat it like a hobby or something, doesn't seem so bad once I've realized people would spend hours or longer scrubbing the carbon out of their guns and rifles.
How often should one perform maintenance on their keyboard? Once every 12 or 6 months? Will it decrease the life of the switch? (I'm using Cherry mx brown)
|
I usually pull out the keys, soak them and clean the rest of the keyboard with the keyboard cleaning putty/goo. Hair and other shit is really hard to get off with q-tips or hands since there's very little room between the switches and there are a lot of crevices and sharp edges

It is time consuming, but I find it relaxing. When you're removing the keycaps, take care when you're removing keys that have keycap stabilizers (they look like this). Typically those are placed under larger keycaps such as the enter and shift keys.
Clean it once every two-three months with a can of compressed air; stuff gets trapped underneath the keycaps overtime like hair, dust, crumbs, etc.
Your keyboard should pretty much last for a very long time. These things last longer than rubber domes, and even those take a very long time to "die". The only thing I'd probably be worried about is not damaging the switch (ex: spilling orange juice into the switches, might get stiff/stuck).
|
Yea, I'll set aside some time this weekend, my keyboard is long overdue for a cleaning. I think I'll leave the stabilizers alone in the meantime, I should probably find a video and familiarize myself with those before I mess around with them. Thank you everyone for your responses~

Yeah, I'm sure you'll be fine. I ordered mine from West Coast Canada so they were "considerate" enough not to process the order and accept payment before confirming it with me personally lol.
