What is this "ACPI" chip and should I be worried about it being 196 degree Celcius? My computer was making loud noises so I downloaded SpeedFan to check stuff.

Has anyone tried formating their SSD drive in exFAT? Does that work? ![]() exFAT has lack-of-support issues because of Microsoft's restrictive licensing and patenting. That said, support is growing significantly from what I can tell. As it happens, there's a benchmark already done for SSDs and file systems: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-file-system-ntfs,3166-4.html Random read/write is going to be the most important benchmark here, since your SSD is usually your OS drive and you will mostly be doing random read/writes (as opposed to reading large files like movies). Between exFAT and NTFS, it's almost a draw. NTFS's robust file permissions control puts it ahead of exFAT for an internal storage device, but exFAT's tolerance of hot-plugging make it a definite choice for USB-connected storage. As we mentioned earlier, FAT32- and exFAT-formatted drives cannot be used for modern operating system disks. But for users who like to have fast access to data, or who prefer to install programs on a different drive than the OS, these arguments begin to make more sense. In general, though, we're going to side with the experts (and Windows) on this one: stick with NTFS if it's internal, and use exFAT only for external storage.

I was testing the speed mainly because I read it's better to have larger clusters if you're using just large files and I noticed some stuttering before with my old flash disk. Also exFAT is supposed to strain the flash disk less so that it doesn't reach its durability limit, plus I already have an OS SSD in NTFS so I was curious ![]()

Does the fan's speed change when you apply 0% to PWM1 or PWM2 ? If your case fan has 3 cables to it, it's not a PWM fan, which means that you can't control it using a 4-pin PWM socket like the ones you might see on the motherboard. I'm guessing that you need a fan controller to control fans which aren't PWM (such fans are controlled through voltage), I'm not sure, ask google to confirm that.

If the fans don't change speed, you didn't unlock manual control of the fans for the chip of your motherboard. That's done on the tab named "advanced" in the settings window. Don't forget to tick the check box in the lower right for the setting to be saved. On that Advanced tab, you select your motherboard's chip, then look through the list of settings it has and look for "PWM mode" or similar. Check out what options there are for those lines. One of those PWM mode lines will be case fans and another one will be the CPU cooler's fan. You need to experiment. The ones you want to control, you need to set to "manual". If there's some where the automatic runs fine, like for example CPU fan, keep that setting on what it was by default. After you managed to actually control your fan speeds manually, you can create rules that tie a temperature reading to a fan's speed so that things run automatic and are quiet on the desktop but speed up when in games etc. I like the "advanced fan control" section of the tool best. It's explained here: http://www.almico.com/sfarticle.php?id=5 That will somewhat override the normal controls that you can configure on the earlier tabs in the program, though I think the min and max settings over there can still do something and cut off stuff about the fan control curve you've drawn in the advanced window.

I currently get around 30ms ping on my laptop when it's on my desk (~5 meters from the modem). I'm about to buy a desktop, and I'm wondering whether I should get a wifi card, a motherboard with a wifi module, or simply get a WiFi USB key (I've tried PCL but my electrical network is pretty old and I get a 60-70ms ping). My question is: would a good WiFi USB key give me similar ping to what I have now, namely around 20-30ms? If so, do you have any good wifi usb key to recommend?

I've never had success with any form of wireless on a desktop - PCI-e card that would crap out under load, USB with signal issues, etc. Apartments in general seem to have a lot of interference since everyone has their own wifi broadcasting and microwaves etc.

![]() After spending much of this evening searching the web and trying different softwares, I have not yet managed to find a software that will simply let me record a Let's Play session of Starcraft Brood War. Would you guys have any suggestions? Preferably a lightweight and freeware program, since my laptop is not that fast. Basic system specs: HP Pavilion DM1 sd4000 OS: Windows 7 - 32bit Processor: AMD E-450 APU 1,65 Ghz 4 GB RAM GPU: AMD Radeon HD 6320 Graphics Programs I have tried so far: D3DGear (doesn't seem to be compatible with lower than DirectX 8) Open Broadcaster Software (same problem) SMRecorder (doesn't seem to record anything). I tried LoiLo Game Recorder, and it did record (whoo! \0/) but it records the main menu in distorted colors and in gameplay it displays mostly a black screen and the letters like "build additional pylons". Tried setting to compatibility mode with Windows XP SP 3, no luck so far. Any suggestions/tips? Thanks in advance! <3

I have ethernet cables running along the walls (against the ceiling) in my apartment, since there's only one jack and it's in the living room. Just got some simple plastic hooks with double-sided tape that's designed for walls to hold it up. A little tacky looking, but out of the way and removable when I move. Since I've had no issue with Wi-Fi over 2+ years on my laptop, I think I'll go with a Wi-Fi USB key since there should not be more signal problems. Cheers!
