For transmitting video~ Displayport > DVI > HDMI but they're all pretty much the same unless you have some niche use like using them for audio too or one does not have enough bandwidth for your resolution and FPS, but another does (all three support 1080p60, hdmi runs into bandwidth issues quickly with the current revision after that res, DVI can use dual link to support higher data rates but later revisions of Displayport are very high bandwidth and also support things like gsync and, in the future, some other ways to dynamically tell the monitor when to refresh) tl;dr probably doesn't matter for you, but it's good habit to use displayport > dvi > hdmi if possible and VGA should never be used unless necessary

Mobo is a Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P. I tried messing around with the boot order/ use the boot menu, made sure USB ports are on during boot and tried to manually set the USB to a higher boot priority than the HDD in the HDD section of bios. No matter what I do, it completely ignores the usb key and does to start up Windows right after POST. Any idea how to fix that would be greatly appreciated! n_n

That might be why there's a difference. How did you prepare the USB stick? Did you follow the guide that's somewhere on the Microsoft website or did you just copy things over manually? UEFI works by looking at files, so doesn't need a "boot sector" prepared on the drive, and that's where copying manually might have broken things for a PC using BIOS. If you still have the .iso disc image file for your Windows 8.1, I recommend a software named "Rufus" to prepare the USB stick. It's a lot more simple to use than following the Microsoft guide. This is its website: http://rufus.akeo.ie/. The screenshot you see there right at the start of the page is already the whole program. It does not have to be installed, can just be downloaded and started. Use similar settings as what's shown in that example screenshot. You select the disc image you want to put on the USB stick through that button that has a tiny drive icon in the lower half of the window.

Here is an album with the relevant bios settings, dunno, maybe there's something wrong with them, but I can't find it. :D

EDIT: If the board really simply can't boot from USB flash drives for some reason, this here might be a solution for the problem: http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanagers.html You'd install that "Plop Boot Manager" on the HDD from within your working Windows. That's a bit scary because it might break everything and then nothing boots and you can't reinstall Windows as the board cannot boot from your USB stick. Maybe only try this Plop stuff if you have a DVD drive and a Windows 7 DVD or something? Installation from within Windows is explained on this page here, section 3.4: http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanager/mbrinstall.html#wininst

Most of the ones I find seem to be sketchy... what kind of drivers? for graphics card you go to amd or nvidia's websites for motherboards (sound and ethernet) you go to the manufacturer's website and look for your motherboard hmm after that i can't think of anymore drivers, then again it's not like i know a lot. what are you referring to exactly?

Doesn't happen with IE or Firefox, and seems to be totally unrelated to the bitrate of the song or the otherwise total load on my system (4.5 Ghz 3750k, 8 GB 1600 CL9 RAM), which should be way more than fast enough to handle everyday shit like this. EDIT: Not 100% sure, but I think this here would work to turn HDMI output from the graphics card into a VGA signal: http://www.amazon.de/LENOVO-HDMI-VGA-Mon-Adapter/dp/B008R4F41G/

Oh, nice find on that adapter, I thought HDMI to VGA is just as impossible as VGA to DVI-D. Although I'll save the money for now until I've tried activating the integrated graphics.

- Use my monitor with my laptop - doesn't work. - Use the old monitor with my computer/laptop - works. - Use my monitor with the cable from the old monitor - doesn't work. Am I correct in deducing from this that the problem has to be with the monitor itself and I'd be best served just buying a new one?
