That i5 is 1.7ghz base clock on CPU and 200-1000mhz on iGPU with a 15w power budget. You shouldn't buy something like that - either buy a CPU without the ultra low power tag (-u) which would be cheaper and be way faster and actually suited to using an iGPU because of having 3x as high power budget, or get some kind of dedicated graphics with the -u CPU.
Preferably a regular CPU with dedicated graphics, but that's more expensive

Is the HQ tag any better? Thanks for your expertise. You are part of what makes TL so awesome.

you should probably look around in window's or something.
click on wifi icon open network and sharing center
then look around for options that allow you to select automatic connections or something

So i have 2 laptops, both old... 1 is a macbook pro 2012 intel Core 2 duo 2.5ghz, 2 is an asus laptop running the first generation i7 intel.
My question is: given sc2 engine only utilizing 2 cores, wouldnt it be much better to run it on the core2 duo machine where the 2 cores has higher clock rate than an i7 which has more lower clockrate cores?

Question: does having my laptop on for a long time have any long-term negative effects? It's fairly common for my "Up-time" to be more than 7 days, even extending to 14 days+.
Also, any suggestions to reduce my disk usage? It frequently peaks at 100% and my laptop becomes laggy (of course). Does my up-time have any association with disk usage?
Thanks. I'm noob at these details.

Sounds like you're eventually maxing out your memory usage and your system is using your hard drive as memory swap. Rebooting your laptop will free up all the memory until it gets full again, so if you have low memory you want to open msconfig and disable startup applications and generally try to keep your memory usage low and reboot more often to stop using disk swap. Watch the performance tab in task manager to monitor your memory usage.
Also, setting your hard drive swap size yourself can stop windows from constantly trying to resize it. Windows is pretty terrible at it, so setting the swap size manually to at least the same amount of memory that you have helps stop HDD seek.
Refer to this: http://imgur.com/A30zUWo.gif
Only set the swap on your system OS drive (C) and if you have 4GB of RAM, set it to 4000 or more. I recommend double, so 8000 if you have 4GB RAM. You don't want to set it too low otherwise windows will pop up a message complaining about low memory if you do heavy computing.

Holy frick I'm an idiot...
So I just dropped my laptop from my couch... Now the laptop won't work anymore. I can still turn it on, but it won't take me to my windows main menu. It just kind of sits there at the main acer black screen. It won't even show me that Windows is loading. Also, after I dropped it, when I tried to turn it on, the laptop made several weird scratching noises. How the crap do I fix this? Do I need to call the laptop manufacturer or is this something Geek Squad tech support could help me out with? (I have a 1 year contract with them right now)

Potentially, but only because the first gen i7 mobiles were awful. Remember, even when only 2 cores are used of either CPU, the core 2 duo has to be clocked like 20% higher just to stay on par because of weaker architecture. I don't know the number, so randomly guessing - it's enough to make the i7 probably stronger IF it can use turbo boost.

I guess a HDD might have broken from the hit if you were unlucky. That would explain the Windows boot logo not showing up. You could try booting from a USB flash drive. If that works, I guess that would be proof that this is really what's happening?
+ Show Spoiler +If you put some Linux distribution like Ubuntu on a USB stick, you can boot to a fully working desktop while using that USB flash drive and can then try to see if everything about the laptop works.
There's also "Hiren's BootCD" if you want a Windows that can boot from a USB stick. That Hiren's stuff comes with a lot tools including something to check the HDD for errors. It might have issues booting on a modern computer because of "UEFI" which is a modern BIOS replacement and the Windows 8 "SecureBoot" thingy.

According Samsung Magician, SSD has 1,22TB "total Bytes written". I remember that at first day it had already 1,08TB (January 2014). Is this ok or irrelevent for me/everyone? SSD Samsung 840 Evo 250GB.
What happens after I modernise my computer (mainboard+processor+graphiccard) and re-install Win7 on SSD?

I recently purchased a gtx 770 and it's absolutely perfect. Does everything I was hoping it to do. However the store from where I bought the card has just informed me that their gigabyte windforce r9 290 has just gone on sale and I would be able to exchange my 770 almost straight up (10 dollar difference). By exchange I mean they would allow me to return the 770 for a full refund, something they normally don't allow, and then purchase the r9 290.
Is the r9 290 that much greater of a card over the 770? Getting to the store is a big hassle for me and consumes the whole day. Plus I'll have to go through a lot of red tape in order to get back my money from the 770.
My monitor is 1920x1080, 144hz.

290 is quite a lot faster, like 40% even at stock. 770 is, out of the box, at pretty much the max speed that it can run, while a 290 is not - so if you're tweaking GPU settings, the 290 is a lot better (like 1.6x area.. i forgot exact numbers)
If you're currently using lightboost hack on your 144hz monitor (like toastyx strobelight) then i think it's more awkward or even impossible to use strobe backlight properly on some monitors with a non-nvidia card; because only some of them (benq xl2411z) have strobe tech built in another way, and lightboost itself is an Nvidia technology. You gotta check up on that if you care about it.
While 290 is a tier above for general gaming performance, there are a lot of differences now between the two brands for drivers and features, so read up a little and be careful

Thx for the quick reply, I really appreciate it.

I would not think twice about changing.
AMD definitely doesn't have a lot of Nvidia's interesting features such as Shadowplay or nice CPU-friendly drivers but for me GPU horsepower is what takes the cake in this case, since you're getting it for a very similar cost. GPU horsepower is good to have when driving 144 Hz unless I'm mistaken.
I'm guessing that since AMD GPUs suck up a bit more CPU resources than Nvidia cards do, that the max framerates the CPU will be able to deliver overall will be lower? Is that what we're looking out for here Cyro?
For example in SC2, which is a CPU limited game, what matters more in CPU limited situations is how much of the CPU's resources a GPU uses. So a GTX 770 with its better drivers will tax the CPU less than an R9 290, since its drivers are better. Same thing for WoW I'm guessing. This means that in CPU limited situations the weaker Nvidia card will actually render more frames.
Of course, in GPU limited situations, the R9 290 is quite a lot faster. If you're looking to play CS:GO, SC2 or WoW or something in CPU-limited situations (which is understandable since you have a 144 Hz monitor) then perhaps the Nvidia card is better.
Hmm is that's where it's at Cyro? As well as the obvious strobe / backlight issue you're talking about.

For some games yea, but most don't see significant changes. You just need to be aware of it for some things like Wildstar, maybe Planetside 2

Hi.
I was wondering what are some symptoms of a dying motherboard without physically looking at it. (It's a bit of a hassle to unplug and redo the cable management if I take it out) I've been having many problems with my computer for around ~2 months now and I can't quite pinpoint where the fault could be other than a bad board. Problems include such as
-Unable to wake up after screen turns off. It's not even in sleep mode, just regular "mode" with Windows turning off monitor after X minute of inactivity. I've had this happen everytime I went to eat dinner (too lazy to turn off monitor manually and put computer to sleep). It seems like it knows when I leave to eat.... At first I thought it was my monitor so I tried connecting by Teamviewer (which indicated my PC was running and connected to Internet) but that doesn't work either.
-Whole computer freezes. Not just Windows but whole system. It's not a long freeze, maybe only like 3-4 seconds but it happens daily at random time. During the frozen state, I have tried to open my dvd drive to see whether it was just my OS being a bitch but it didn't respond. Same with pressing number lock, scroll lock, or caps lock to toggle the light on my keyboard. Nothing works during that time. Kinda suspected my SSD at first but whole system didn't work so that can't be it.
-One of rear USB port only responds at random times Since my front side USB & components doesn't work, I'm forced to use the rear usb ports. Whenever I try to connect to my phone via usb, it shows charging and "connected to media device" which is normal and is suppose to happen. However a few seconds later it just drops the media connection and only shows the charging icon. When I'm lucky, I even get AutoPlay pop up in Windows for 5 seconds then poofs away...In order to fix the problem, I need to replug million times until it finally stays on connection. I'm 99% certain that it's not the problem with my cable or the phone as it worked perfectly before and it still works perfectly with other laptops
-Front USB & components are weird. I'm not sure if it's the fault of the case or mobo but it didn't work even on the first day I built this. At random time, front USB port stops working entirely. No more power is provided on that port and it will stay dead until I reboot. 3.5mm headphone jack is messed up in a way that only distorted fuzzy sound comes out. I haven't used out the mic port so I have no idea if it works or not
Halp me please D:

Why is it that for some online video streaming service (twitch archived video, etc.) I could see a noticeable difference in video quality between 720p and 1080p, when I'm only watching on a 720p laptop? Doesn't happen with youtube videos, I can't appreciably notice a difference between 720p and 1080p there.

I don't know the specifics of what the different services do on the back end, but it probably has to do with the video source and processing. Keep in mind that nobody is getting uncompressed footage. They get whatever the uploader gives them. The service has to reencode videos at different settings and resolutions on their own servers.
For live streaming, the reencoding happens in real time, which can result in lower quality. And they may spend less resources (CPU cycles) to make the process faster and actually keep up, which is probably more of the reason for the lower quality. Or otherwise some other difference with the reencoding setting. Or maybe the YT examples are sent in at higher than 1080p (really depends on what you're talking about), and both 1080p and 720p are reencoded from something else.
If you're using HTML5 for YT, maybe it uses a different and superior resampler than Flash? I don't know. All I know is that the resamplers—at least evidenced from upsampling—are pretty bad in general and worse than what's possible.
