Ok, so about 2 months ago, I received my first mechanical keyboard, a 6Gv2. I was so happy because this is so much better than a classic one. But then, about 3 weeks ago, my "T" key stopped working, but not totally. If I open Notepad and hit it about 50 times, sometimes a little "t" will appear. So I said to myself "ok, this is just one key, I can remap another key to mimic stim/storm/etc.
But then, 15 minutes ago, my "1" key (not the one on the numpad) stopped working as well. This one seems a little less bad, since it's like working 1 times on 10. And the more I press it, the more hits it takes to actually make it work. Also, the "t" key stopped working while I was writing something on skype, and the "1" when I was mid-game and selectionning my hotkey group.
I don't want to send it back, since it's the second time they send me a broken keyboard, and the shipping costs are starting to getting high. I want to know if there is anything I can/could do beforehand. Maybe it's some switch inside the keyboard, but I I can't seem to be able to open it completely (even after taking out all the screws).
Thank you for your help!
|
Dont open it to risk any complaints from them, Just send it in one more time man.
|
I'm surprised you are having these problems because I have the same keyboard as you and I have not had any problems like these. I do feel bad because life with 6gv2 really sucks so I hope you get it fixed.
I would suggest not opening it because it may void any warranty (not sure) attached to the product so just get in contact with SteelSeries and see what they can do (I do understand shipping costs are getting expensive).
|
dude dont open it... you might already gone too far. it usually voids all warranty .
try it on some other comps to make 100% sure its not you and then send it back again. and shouldnt they cover shipping in such cases?
|
Well, they cover shipping from them to you, but not from you to them... 25$ shipping are getting expensive, so I want to look at all the options before the deadline for warranty is met. Also, I found this thread http://www.devhardware.com/forums/showpost.php?p=690769&postcount=14
The guy had the same problem, and it was finally a cable from the motherboard to the LED panel that was broken. It's weird that it has anything to do with the keyboard he said as well, but it worked after. Since the LED cable aren't really necessary and I built my case so I know what is inside, I don't really mind opening it, but since it works perfectly with my non-mechanical keyboard, I don't know...
|
If it's the switches I guess you could buy new ones and replace them?
|
Maybe you can talk to support into paying for shipping both ways? I mean it is their fault and if not threaten to never buy another Steelseries product ever again.
|
Got an Steelseries 6Gv2 in christmas, My ASD keys stopped working after 1hour. I just sent it back and didn't bother to buy a new one.
Is this a common problem?
|
I don't have much experience with steelseries support, but I'd think that if they're having issues with dead keys it would be less likely that it's their fault and more likely that they got shipped a bad run of keys by Cherry Corp. (the company that manufactures the MX Cherry Black key switches that they use in the Steelseries 6Gv2 and 7G).
Pull off the keycap for the T key, press down the switch and see if it registers, if it doesn't, send the keyboard back and get it replaced (No way for them to tell if you pulled off a key cap, and it shouldn't void your warranty anyways). If the key works without the keycap on it, then replace the keycap and see if still functions properly, if not then you can safely conclude that there's something wrong with the keycap, pull it off again, see what it looks like on the bottom, compare it to images from the web of keycaps, see what the difference is, and then either fix it with a dremel tool or return your keyboard for a full refund and purchase a Filco or Das mechanical keyboard.
|
You can replace individual switches, which should completely fix the problem. Double check to make sure that there's nothing stuck underneath the keys; there's nothing wrong with popping off the key caps, but don't start unscrewing anything. If the switches are indeed the problem, you'd probably be much better off buying the individual ones you need than shipping it back to SteelSeries RMA.
|
Yea, I think I am gonna get a DAS or a filco. There are also lots of reseller in Canada for DAS so shipping is going to be a lot less expensive. I just think I am not going to buy from steelseries anymore :/
Thank you all for your feedback.
|
|
wow I actually like this keyboard design. I could pretty well find me using the f keys for the control groups to reduce hand's movement
|
I mainly use my das now, but I haven't had any issues with the 6Gv2. Still, it's understandable that you want to switch to a different brand with two faulty products, though.
Lol I guess those F-keys would be easier to use if I hadn't already developed the muscle memory from BW to use the regularly placed F-keys.
|
Okay this happened to me, when my qwertyuio keys stopped working. I also opened the keyboard to see if i couldd fix it, but it didn't work so I got full warranty for it. Their customer support is great and they ship really quickly too.
I think the problem is if you disconnect it when the computer is running. I read InControl write this in a different 6gv2 thread, so I started listening to him and so far my keyboard hasnt had any complications. Just remember to fully shutdown your computer and then unplug the keyboard. Don't do it while computer is running.

Hmm, well this is what InControl said, "Also if you unplug your keyboard a lot you need to make sure and turn the computer off with the 7 otherwise you run the risk of doing some damage."
Just realized he was talking about the 7, but it may apply to 6gv2 as well? Well at least I'm not having problems with the 6gv2 anymore. Hopefully he figures it out too.

You opened it and got full warranty for it? How did you do? I only see 3 screws in the back, and even when I pull them off, there seems to be something holding the keyboard together... I want to know because I am probably not going to RMA it anyways, north canada to california shipping is way too expensive, particularly when I got 2 broken products already...
And I didn't unplug this one once since i plugged it in. I didn't even used the adapter because I did not want to risk breaking it. But it still did :/

Although we haven't had many reports of the issue, we're looking into it with our manufacturer. We pride ourselves on the quality of the G series boards and we'll ensure the best quality and longevity possible.
That said we'd really like to resolve the issue and we realize you have a ticket but for anybody experiencing a problem with keys not working, etc.. Please try the board on another computer both with PS2 connector and without if possible. Make sure you are not routing the device through a hub and connect directly to a rear port on your PC. If all else fails, contact us directly: Http://www.steelseries.com/support
We'll either get the issue resolved or work on an RMA. We realize shipping costs are expensive and apologize for the inconvenience. We will do our best to work something out

Hey I just got my 6gv2 yesterday.
My left shift feels a little funky it doesn't make the same sound as the rest of the keys and it's kind of sticky to the touch.
Also the the backspace and 0 ins (numpad) feel similar. All these keys share the same design. I was wondering if this is normal or should I exchange the keyboard for a new one?
Right now I don't know if they should feel this way. Can anyone with a this keyboard let me know if this is normal.
I talked to support but they didn't give me an answer regarding this but they did offer to exchange the keyboard.
I don't wanna send this keyboard to Denmark, I can exchange it locally but I need to make sure that this is not the way the key should feel. I don't really care about the other 2 keys but the left shift really annoys me because I use it often I needed it to react like the rest of the keys.
Thanks.

exchange it for a new one. all your keys SHOULD feel nearly the same and none should stick. when you exchange, ask to open the box of the new one in the store to check out all the keys there and make sure they feel uniform and don't stick.
|
^ its probably the stabilizers if its the large keys.
|
If this had been a Razer Keyboard everyone would have been saying "ZOMG buy a new keyboard!" But because the Steel Series fanboyism is so strong here people are saying things like: "They probably got a shipment of bad keycaps from Cherry." That's kind of silly dude, even if that were the case it would have fallen on SteelSeries' QC to make sure the product was functioning before shipping it. Clearly they are doing everything they can to make this work for you though and they seem to really care about how they are perceived by the gaming community, but they are humans too.

I've noticed the same thing with mine. I recently got mine new and the left shift seems to behave differently than the rest of the keys as far as how it depresses and clicks. I find it annoying to not behave the way you expect it to, but I think you'll get used to it.

also have the same problem with the left shift key. it has a bit of a clicking noise that the other keys don't. It still feels ok, i'm actually a little bit convinced that the key doesn't work sometimes when I push it when I try to shift clikc 1 zergling out of my group....i'll wait another week before deciding to exchange it.
|
Yes I'm not sure if this is normal. This is pretty broken in my opinion. The left shift key feels much better on my 10 dollar logitech keyboard.
The other shift key on the right side of the keyboard preforms like the other keys, it's also smaller.
Can you guys check to see how the Backspace feels and also the 0 ins on the numpad. All 3 keys share the same design. Also they don't have the click and they feel a bit sticky. But I can't have my left shift stick feeling like that. I use left shift a lot.
Even tho I feel like the keyboard does have a getting used to period. I noticed that it response is much faster then my older membrane keyboard in SC2. It also solved my lag force field issue.
There is no way I could get used to that shift key. If this is how all the keyboards feel I will have to return it.
|
Like I mentioned, your keys should not feel sticky. Linear force down and fast release up. If the larger keys (space/shifts) are wobbly, you likely have fucked up stabilizers. If any of this is the case for you, return your board for a new one, and ask to check out the new board before you leave the store (test the keys).
This is actually a common issue with the 6GV2 from what I have seen in many websites reviews/user reviews. Which is why when I bought mine I bought local (not online) so I could test the board's keys first. It's a fantastic board when it checks out, but don't put up with a slightly defective $100 board, get a new one.
|
i've had my 6gv2 for a while and even abused it a few times yet it's still working fine.
the only issue i've had is with the spacebar sometimes not returning to its default position which was easily fixed by removing the key and putting it back on, haven't had the issue since.

Ya the problem is I have to go to their warehouse and they don't have a new gear tryout policy. But they mind let me try out the keyboards there. I'll know when I get there.
They also said I could exchange it, the other mechanical keyboards they have are the Black Widow (blues switches) and the DasKeyboard(brown switches).
Right now I'm tempted to just get the DasKeyboard with brown switches.
The Black switches feel a bit too hard. I wasn't too impressed with how they felt in fact I feel like I lost some speed. But they do work good in game compared to my membrane keyboard. I can defiantly execute actions faster they have a really fast response. I'm not sure if browns are the answer for me. Also I have to shell out 40 more bucks for the DadKeyboard.
On the other hand the BlackWidow would be 5 bucks cheaper then the 6Gv2.
I can tell when I type on the 6Gv2 or in game I got much more control. I make less mistakes for sure. But I don't feel as fast. I guess I have to get used to it.
Thanks for all the responses, they are very helpful.

I really do think its the stabilizers that youre feeling. They do sound slightly different than just the switch by itself.

Once I removed the keys I saw that there is the switch it self and then 2 none movable switches on each side of the switch, I guess that's what you mean by stabilizers. They don't really move much. They have are not 100% static, they have movement to them. Now I'm not sure if they are supposed to feel like that on all the keyboards. Or it's maybe mine. Right now I just have a feeling that it might be just me not liking the feel of how the "stabilizers" react with they key. It might be just present on all the keyboards. That's why I'm wondering if it's just a personal problem or an actual hardware problem?
|
The only problem I've had with mine is that my 9 key is a little loose and sometimes falls off, but that's because I rage and smash my keyboard against my desk :D
|
im probably gonna exchange it for the DAS keyboard brown switch.
|
also i just noticed 2 of the keys are already fading, i've only used it for like 6 hours.

Maybe I'm missing something here? I posted a complete paragraph where I was pointing out the extreme favoritism being exhibited by certain posters in this forum. Maybe I'm misinterpreting you here, but it seems like you were making a smartass comment at my expense. Yet your post in which the aforementioned smartass comment was made was nothing more than three disjointed sentences, and about 25% of the total text was devoted to making this smartass comment that's not even particularly clever. I guess what I'm trying to say here is that I find your attempt at chastising me for inadequate posting ironic.
Go with the BlackWidow, You really can't go wrong, especially with Blues. I have a BlackWidow and I have loved it since Day 1, Jesus and Moses have it too 8)
Better contribution? How about this one?
When I purchased a new mechanical keyboard recently, I carefully weighed all of the factors involved. There are many different products on the market to choose from, each one has its own advantages and disadvantages, but the choice of which keyboard is the best is purely left to the individual purchasing the keyboard. While the most essential choice you'll be making will be the key switches, there are a plethora of other options to consider. Personally I chose the Black Widow Ultimate for the following reasons: Back lighting, USB Pass-through, Braided USB cable, Macro keys, Overall look and design, Feel and responsiveness of Blue key switches.
The Razer Black Widow happens to pack in a lot more features at a given price point vs their competitors, although none of them are crucial, and wouldn't make a difference if you didn't like the feel of the Blue Cherry Key switches. I would encourage anyone to try as many of the keyboards in person as possible in order to determine get the best possible fit.
|
I think I'm going with the Daskeyboard Brown switch.
The Black Widow looks good but I'm sure the Daskeyboard is far superior in quality.
I'm not liking the black switches so far. Way too much force needs to be applied. It's really making me fatigued. | gained more precession but I lost my speed. I feel it's a good FPS keyboard but for RTS you need speed. I don't know I'm still gonna give it more testing.
The 6gv2 is built solid but the keys are already fading in 2 days of usage.
|
Had to RMA my 6Gv2 today. The A key quit working in the middle of a game of SC2 lastnight. Quite disappointing seeing I've owned the keyboard less than a month and was on a week long vacation for part of it. Now I'm having to use an old membrane keyboard I had in the closet and can't get used to the key positions to play SC until my replacement gets here.
|
BlackWidow is built like shit, just like other Razer products unfortunately. So far i haven't had any problems with steelseries products, including Xai, qck, 6gv2... If I'd had to choose a new keyboard, i would rather try out the new Zowie Celeritas, looks really nice and solid built. You could always go for filco keyboards ofc, but they're quite more expensive. Then if you live in the States or Canada, you could try getting a Rosewill Cherry MX Blue for 79$ @ Newegg or maybe some other retailers.
|
I ended up exchanging the 6gv2 for the Das Keyboard Brown Cherry Switch.
I must say that the extra 40 bucks was worth it. I love this keyboard.
I got the chance to also try the BlackWidow, right away I could tell that it's cheaply made. Didn't take more then a 5 sec for me to know that the BlackWidow is not the keyboard for me. The 6gv2 is much better build. In fact if the shift key didn't feel so damn sticky I would of kept the keyboard.
Brown switches feel so good on my fingers, so much speed. Black switches were way too stiff. I'm sure some people would be into it. But it would really fatigue my fingers after 6 hours of play.
The 6gv2 is build like a tank tho also the das keyboard is really solid as well.
The das keyboard feels 10x better. You can't go wrong with this keyboard.
I'm not saying that 6gv2 is a bad keyboard. It's probably the best keyboard in the price range if you get one that has no issues. But the stiffness could be a huge issue for some like my self.
I personally prefer the Brown switch over the Black switch. I didn't see too much of a differences between the Blue and Brown switch feeling wise. Maybe the Blues are a bit stiffer but not by a lot.
Using the DasKeyboard seem so effortless. You can't go wrong with this keyboard. I also prefer the layout on this keyboard over the 6gv2. But I did like they way the 6gv2 looks without the glossy finish.

Hi guys,
i got my g6v2 today. So far im very happy with the whole feel of the keyboard. It is very solid and the black switch feels really comfortable. However, I got this huge problem with the A and F key.
When I tild them a little bit backwards (towards my body) without applying downwards preasure, those keys produce a clearly tactile and audible click which doesnt yield a keystroke. It feels as the key stucking and un-stucking. Unfortunately the A key is next to impossible to remove, so I cannot check if there are any lose or broken parts.
Could any of you kind G6 users tilt their keys a little bit backwards and report their findings? Id really like to know if this is normal or not. I'd totally hate bringing it back to the shop after just a couple of hours..allthough it is sort of annoying, I probably have to do it anway. Just wanna know what you guys think.
Regards,
Chris

I'd like to add I managed to drop my keyboard from around 6 feet and it felt like ultra slow-mo when it hit the concrete while my heart fell faster than it did.
Anyway after curling up into the foetal position and crying for several hours I plugged it in and it worked just as normal, besides the rattling sound when shaken.
And to answer the above users question, no it doesn't make any sound or feel like how you described so maybe you should upload a small video on youtube to show us exactly what the problem is because it would feel awkward going back after a day or two :/
|
Reporting back after turning in my faulty 6gv2. The new one has the exact same issue of yet again 2 keys, this time its "M" and ";". I would not mind about it too much, but on theres another problem with this one: the spring on the W key is squeaky and clearly less responsible than the other keys. Considering that I'm also playing some WASD games this is clearly horrible.
I still like the keyboard a lot, but I'm under the impression that steelseries got some serious issues with maintaining quality standards- which is not acceptable on a 80 eurons keyboard. I think I will eventually give it back and get a 10$ piece again which will last for another 5 years :S
|
Both my brother and I own this keyboard. Personally, I have had no issues. However, my brother is on his 3rd one.
The 1st he sent in but it must have got lost in the mail so my parents bought him a new one entirely. Then the shift keys stopped working. At this point, Steelseries just sent him a new one for free and they didn't even ask for the old one back.
After going through all these posts, it seems that the build quality is somewhat iffy which is disappointing because it's a nice keyboard.
|
Popular keyboard and only the ones with problems come to whine so no making statements about build quality from that.

contact customer support and tell them your issues, I can say from experience steel series has one of the more useful customer service centres. I managed to get some of my shipping costs covered and some free merchandise ( a kinzu originally, but, now a xai due to availability and also a mousepad.) due to all the issues I was having.
|
the problem is not related to the switches but to the board and the welding itself, i had the same problem and i didn't wanna spend money on shipping fees so i repaired it myself. Some routes get cut randomly, you need to check them with a multimeter and weld them but the wax they put to protect is kinda awful so i'll suggest to use wire instead of trying to fix the route. Just find the start and the end of the route for the key and bind them.
|
My 5 key is faulty..this is supposed to be as solid as they come, but I see others have the same problem. They key mechanical aspects seem fine, but is still works very rarely.. I can't deal with a faulty 5 key..remapping seemes "unfair" and not for me. I never return stuff because of being loaded and actually going to the post office with a package is not in my vocabulary.
Since this seemes so common I am going towards firmware/driver issues maby..
|
I own the 7g. The only problem I had was the spacebar was double tapping. I contacted SS support and they sent mew a new spacebar free of charge, however i later found out if I removed the space bar and put it back on, it fixed the problem. Other than that. I've had no problems with mine.

hey everyone, a couple of minutes ago the d key on my 6gv2 suddenly stopped working, using copy paste now to use the key, does anyone know a solution aside from sending it back?

Have you tried to use a different usb port on your motherboard/laptop?

Contact the customer support when they open again, and they will most likely send you a new one. I have had my 6gv2 for 1 1/3y now with zero problems. But I kinda want to switch to the one with red keys.
