I wonder if FILCO is aware of how much revenue they must be getting from Starcraft players alone, haha.

Gah, you guys are killing me. I don't want to spend the money on one, but this thread keeps getting bumped, and every time I see it, i go look at the Filco tenkeyless and want it more. Might have to be a christmas present to myself.

Hah, you've just discovered the achilles heel of these mechanical keyboards. I spilt coffee on my Unicomp Customiser (the classic IBM Model M with a few tweaks, built in the same factory for another company) and it's been essentially knocked out of action.

Damn thing could survive a nuclear war, be used to beat the scavenging radioactive mutant survivors to death before they eat you, and still be wiped off and plugged in and used to play Fallout 2 afterwards, but a few little drops of coffee in between the membrane sheets can rot the contacts permanently (barring some sort of patchwork repair, which I'm currently attempting) and cause keys to fail. Also they're an absolute nightmare to reassemble if you ever have cause to take them apart, though your Filco is hopefully constructed along entirely different lines.

What I'm saying is that you really, really want to get the spill seen to quickly. I imagine the folks at geekhack.org have had this problem come up countless times, so there must be someone in there who can help.

+1

I've seen some nasty mold shit from computer equipment from coffee that someone just "let dry out" and not properly clean out.

Filco keyboards come with a cover which you should place over your keyboard while eating or drinking (or overnight to reduce the amount of dusting you need to do.)

The coffee isn't likely to actually get in the switches unless you invert the keyboard. Clean it out carefully and you should be OK. The contact pads in membrane keyboards are more vulnerable.

Lol wut membrane keyboards are pretty much water poof short of submerging it in water. The rubber above the contact pads prevents water from getting on them much more successfully then flico's keyboards. They also cost like 10-20 bucks do loosing one isn't a kick in the balls =p

Since I'm the only one who mentioned membranes, I presume you're referring to me. There's very little rubber in a model M or Customiser (it's not a rubber dome, it's a proper buckling spring mechanical keyboard where the collapsing spring presses the membrane).

You're right that pure water won't do much damage to a membrane proper (it might burn out the electronics, or concievably, I suppose, drench any rubber dome that was there) - usually, the keyboard would just think you're pressing a lot of keys at the same time. It's all the other chemicals in whatever you've spilled in it (soda, beer, coffee, hard tap water with all those metallic minerals) that reacts with the conductive tracer and can cause corrosion. I know this for a fact because I've actually done the experiment (unfortunately) - a couple of hours with a few drops of coffee in the membrane (which I then washed out) rotted whatever it is they use to conduct electricity in these things and stopped a bunch of keys from working.

Also my Unicomp cost me $69 + shipping (and that's a lot cheaper than the $250 or so that the original IBM models used to cost).

Okay, I switched now.

I use an original Cherry G80-3000 with "brown" Cherry switches. Though in Europe colors are white, blue and black for some reason. Don't care, in return it only cost me €50, while importing a FILCO would have set me back more than 110.

Quite a bit louder than my old one but the sound is also nice. And it feels like I'm really giving my fingers some rest. Will take some time until I dont bottom out the keys anymore though.

Count me on board :-D

edit: any of you know a good program to emulate media keys? I miss my volume up/down keys :-(

On spills: Best emergency solution is to instantly flush with distilled water. Then you can dry up more safely since it won't get chalk on your contacts. Also probably best to dry with depressed keys since this will prevent the water from ligeringing on the important parts of the contact. Just my 2c.

I don't know if you use iTunes or not, but I found a program called iTunesKeys that lets you set up keyboard shortcuts for next/play/pause/volume/ratings and a bunch of other stuff. Don't know about ones for volume in general

No you don't. Not with mine. There are only 3 of them right now.
http://www.cherrycorp.com/english/switches/key/mx.htm
Even on the homepage there's only black, blue and white. The white one is the soft-tactile and if your look at the data-sheet, it's the one which is widely called the "brown" one.

The "clear" switches listed here
http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?title=Cherry switches and boards
aren't even on sale anymore. And the white switches discuseed further down isn't it either.

I'll mail Cherry to inquire what transpires here since they obviously don't sell brown colored switches themselves anymore. I'll update once I know more.

edit: This page
http://park16.wakwak.com/~ex4/kb/tech_cherry_mx.htm
says that the cherry brown are "ergonomic" cherry white, that means a more pronounced bump but about the same resistance bump and activation force.

The cherry datasheet also mentions that the curve is the ergonomic bump but with no mention of the color coding. Intriguing.

edit 2: I feel a bit grumpy. I dropped them a mail inquiring further but am now convinced those are in fact slightly inferior switches. But on the whole website there isn't even a hint that those are even used in any models anymore, even less made, especially since the other keyboards of the same Type use the current blue and black ones. I want my money back :-(

So I am considering getting a new keyboard should I go for the Filco or some other mechanical keyboard like a Steelseries 7G?

The Filco is a good choice, but it depends on your exact needs. Read this mechanical keyboard primer, and you'll be equipped to pick the right keyboard for you.

That said, Filco keyboards are top notch, and there are like 10 different versions of the Majestouch with different features covering different needs. I own two (both tenkeyless with Cherry Browns). I've also heard nothing but good things about the Steelseries 7G, so it's also a good choice if Cherry MX Black switches are your preference.
