The Steelseries has Cherry MX Black switches, which are linear. That's the most significant difference. Black switches are linear, meaning they don't provide a tactile "bump" to indicate they've activated, and they are stiffer. Most people find black switches significantly inferior for typing and probably somewhat inferior for RTS gaming as well. Some people find them superior for FPS gaming.

By contrast, the Filco keyboards have your choice of Blue, Brown or Black switches (the one's that have been showing up in the hands of pros have all had Brown). You also have your choice of NKRO or non-NKRO and full-size 104-key layout, or tenkeyless 87-key layout. The Filco keyboards also have a bit nicer fit-and-finish from most accounts.

The steelseries comes with a big wrist rest and has an integrated USB hub and headphone/microphone jacks. Filcos don't really have any extras, other than the red Esc key (you can order branded wrist rests separately).

filco, das, and ducky are all made by costar, a taiwanese based manufacturer. filco is a brand and buys their stuff from costar, brands it, and resells it. as do ducky and DAS from my understanding.

ducky is the closest thing to filco in terms of looks, in fact, they look identical except red keys, logo, etc. the rosewill also looks similar. ducky has two prominent models, the DK-9000 and dk-9008 (extra buttons + nkro i think). i've heard really good things about the finish and feel of ducky keyboards from geekhack. rumor has it that ducky will have a US distributor fairly soon.

das, well, das is well known and most of their kbds are nice. i have heard them having a few issues in the past. i think it got solved though.

filco. everyone knows about filco. but for $110-140 it might be a bit pricey.

i think the ducky dk-9000 might be priced somewhere around $100 shipped in the US. the DK-9008 might be a bit more?

If you want to see what different mechanical keyboards are available where and with which switch and what features, consult:

Overclock.net's Mechanical Keyboard Guide
Mechanical Switch Keyboards Sorted by Switch

Those two pages link to reviews and explanations of everything and will let you compare different keyboards that interest you.

Just want to give you guys my 2 cents. I own two Filco boards - a full-size Majestouch Tactile Touch (Cherry MX Brown) NKRO and Majestouch Tactile Click Tenkeyless (Cherry MX Blue) NKRO. I've also played starcraft mostly with the QSENN DT-35 (popular membrane keyboard among BW pros), and scissor switch boards - Logitech Illuminated and Dinovo edge.

I personally prefer the Cherry Blues and scissor switch boards for gaming. Call me weird, but the brown's just feel like they have too long of a travel distance and actuate with too little force. The Blue's have a very nice click, more noticeable bump, and require slightly more force (5g, I think) to actuate. Likewise, the QSENN DT-35 as well as other membrane keyboards also have a more tactile feel but the key rebound on non-mechanical keyboards is slower and feels much less smooth. I also like scissor switch boards for SC because the travel distance is so low and the keys bounce back quickly (not as quickly as mechanical boards, though).

I haven't tried Cherry MX Blacks and I really don't have an urge to since I heard typing on those boards is pretty sub-optimal.

If I ever get to try a new board, it will probably be a Topre as those give a very unique typing experience though I've heard very little about them being used for gaming.

To above poster, what do you think about the sound difference between the Cherry Blues/Browns? Are the Cherry Browns quieter?

I was 1 click away from ordering the Filco Tenkeyless Cherry Brown today and am just waiting on this last tidd bit of info to make my mind up for sure.

Yes, Cherry Blues are much louder than the Browns. If you play lots of PC games and you bottom out the keys on both, the Browns will be pretty audible as well. If you train yourself to "correctly" and efficiently type on a mechanical keyboard (i.e. not bottoming out keys but stopping when you hear the click or feel the bump) then the Browns can be very quiet.

I personally enjoy the clicky sound of the Blues and the feeling of typing on them is sublime - it's like crunching through a back of potato chips. I'm not trying to deter you from Browns because they give a great all-around experience especially when your fingers get more accustomed to them. You can get some sound samples of different boards below, but if sound is a concern and you don't care for the click then you definitely want the Browns.

it's not it's a freaking keyboard. no need to hype a keyboard people say it's a world of difference but usually they are the same people who hype shit anyways. A world of difference is using a mouse then using a trackpad it's very different. A keyboard is a keyboard is a keyboard, just because a switch feels a bit different and springs a bit differently is just a quark not a god send.

Would you like to type all day or game on a chicklet keyboard? On a cell phone keypad? On one of those rubber roll-up keyboards? There's a difference between hamburger helper and prime rib.

Buying the keyboard because you saw your favorite pro using it is probably not the best reason, but anyone who did got "suckered" into buying a high-quality piece of equipment that will give them many years of enjoyment.

A keyboard is something that most of us use for hours and hours every single day. Isn't it obvious that you'd want the most luxurious available if that were the case?

Mechanical keyboards like this make a huge difference. They are a pleasure to type on.

I called filco and they said they received a new shipment over the weekend. The guyy said they would be shipping out today or tomorrow. He did say there was a backlog of orders so I'm not sure you would receive one if you ordered now.

I've always been interested in mechanical switch keyboards but I have never used one.

The more research I do the more it seems like we get shafted pretty hard on this side of the world.

Most appear to be rebranded versions of Costar boards made in Taiwan, like the Das Keyboard, Filco, the Newegg one, probably much more.

The best quality available here seems to be filco, but they are kind of over priced at elitekeyboards. The Rosewill RK-9000 for instance is more or less identical to the Majestouch NKRO blue for $35 less. It was even on sale in the US for $75. Unfortunately there's no brown Rosewill, and there's no non NKRO versions. I wonder how much cheaper they'd be compared to the Majestouch which is $109. The biggest fault in the Rosewill seem to just be the logo/brand name.

There's others like the Adesso, Scorpius etc but they all seem to have some fault or flaw.

From the research I've done the board I really want is a Ducky, but they aren't available at all over here. It's a shame. I will probably settle for the Newegg board if I get any.

I'm glad that Razer is getting into mechanical switch scene, even though I don't care for their products, we definitely need more options

I'm really ocnsidering buying a blue switch Filco.

I was greatly disapointing with my razer tarantula and now my "w" key works 2/3 which sucks for LoL.

I just had a 96$ tax back from governement, it could have great use !

Lol sure you know what's better not typing at all =p You spend a lot of time typing on them but what will make your time more conformable would be not to use the keyboard lifts on the back and to use a proper wrist rest so your hand drops down not points up at the keyboard. That will make it much better to type on but the fact that the keys spring up a bit better. Most people aren't good enough typists to notice or use that difference.

pretty sure filco cherry brown is hands down the preferred mechanical keyboard for gaming seems like...

edit: i almost got the i-rocks 6230 cherry brown for ~90 shipped but decided to shell out extra for filco
