I actually see a COOLER MASTER HAF X RC-942-KKN1 on craigslist for 125, I just don't know too much about cases since I have really only ever built my current one from scratch. Maybe I will spring for that or the HAF one you mentioned.

Even with a case, it's iffy, you could have broken or missing tool free components, warped spots from abuse that you may or may not be able to spot, and other issues. Case would be the closest to safe, but I just wouldn't chance it. If you're willing to invest for quality, do it properly, as it really is an investment.

My current resolution is 1680x1050 (but I'll probably get a new monitor eventually, prob 1920x1080). My upgrade cycle is ~1-2 years. No overclocking, no OS needed (I plan on running Linux), no second GPU. I'd like to get the parts from Newegg. Can anyone suggest a build? Thanks!

Your magic 8 ball is as good as mine, but until the numbers stop being imaginary and start being prices, there's no real way to know. It's plausible AMD will shuffle their price points around a bit, depending on Intel's market placement. In other words, what skyR said, but with the caveat that you may be able to pay less for bad products that nobody should buy anyways.

And even if there was a price drop, you would be waiting until the summer for the i3 unless you plan on increasing your budget to get an i5. Isn't Piledriver going to be released soon? It obviously won't match ivy bridge performance, but if they bring down the power consumption along with prices, they could potentially compete in the budget segment. Even if Bulldozer was a big failure, the main concern was it's skyhigh wattage, so if they fix that perhaps some competition in lower segments. The ivy bridge i3 models won't be released until summer? it's just the i7 and i5 in april? that kinda sucks...

(1) Motherboard: ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3 LGA 1155 Z68 ATX Intel Motherboard (2) Processor: Intel Core i5 2500K LGA 1155 (3) RAM: Samsung 16GB DDR3-1600 (PC3-12800) CL11 UDIMM A few pieces I'm looking at: (a) PSU: OCZ ZS Series 750W 80PLUS Bronze High Performance Power Supply (http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/71290/newegg-ocz-zs-series-80-plus-bronze-power-supply-unit-20-gift-card-ocz-550w-20-gift-card-43-ocz-650w-20-gift-card-51.50-ocz-zs-750w-20-gift-card) Very cheap, is this a reliable PSU? (b) GPU: GTX680 or Radeon 7970 (depending upon price breaks that occur in the near future) What is your budget? $1550 on the remaining components, including a second monitor (already have one) and OS. What is your resolution? 1920x1080 What are you using it for? Almost entirely gaming. I play mostly Blizzard titles, but would like the ability to expand horizons if needed. What is your upgrade cycle? Long upgrade cycle (2-3 years) When do you plan on building it? As soon as possible; mainly waiting for the GPU market dust to settle. Do you plan on overclocking? No. Do you need an Operating System? No. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? No. Where are you buying your parts from? Amazon, NewEgg (any reputable US site really) and Microcenter.

GTX680 over 7970 in most cases but you should probably wait until the manufacturers have released their models.

That said, in the current climate, if you need something, you can do worse. Just ordered myself one, since my HDD died finally.
