I'll be honest, if he simply bought all the computer parts to piece together his own laptop... that would be epic.

Question, guys. My friend is offering me a used i5-2400, and mobo for $150. I'm using Pentium dual core E6500 2.93ghz (clocked to 3.33ghz) with ATI 5770, which gives me around 50-60fps in sc2 (playable), and a bit lower in some other games. I know my current setup is very cpu bottlenecked.
Would this be a huge improvement? Should I take the deal?
Thanks for your advice !

Yes, a core i5 2400 is a huge improvement over a E6500.

getting an ati 6950 for a monitor with a 1900x1080 resolution is ok?

Hi there I am looking to build a PC and right now i am getting a feel for the market. I have never buildt a pc before and could really use some advice. Right now I havent looked at case, PSU and so on. But I would like advice on cooling, I want to to do some OC but still keep noise as low as possible.
What i have so far:
PROCESSOR Intel Core i7 2700K - 3,5 GHz - $ 375 (I am not sure if I need this good a processor, there is a lot to save with the Intel Core i5 2500K - 3,3 GHz - $ 254, advice?
MOBO ASUS M5A87 - ATX - $ 110
HDD Seagate BARRACUDA 7200.14 - 1 TB - SATA 6GB/S - 7200 rpm - $ 134
SSD Corsair SSD interne Force Series 3 - 120 Gb - $ 175
GPU GAINWARD GeForce GTX 560 - 2 Gb GDDR5 - $ 276 (as far as PCs go GPU is one of the things i understand the least but i have heard a lot of good about the 570, is it worth it?)
RAM Corsair Vengeance 2 x 4 GB DDR3-1600 - $67
Total price with out case, OS, PSU, (what else am i missing?) = $ 1137 (w the i7, $1016 w the i5)
Here is what i am looking for: + Show Spoiler + What is your budget? 2000 usd max
What is your resolution? I will be using 2 monitors, the primary is 1920x1080
What are you using it for? I will be using it mainly for StarCraft 2 and streaming. I want to be able to stream at 1080p, with web cam and mic. I am looking for a pc that can handle even touch (like team games) situations with the graphics maxed.
What is your upgrade cycle? I have a relatively slow upgrade cycle and would have this pc 2+ years.
When do you plan on building it? I plan on ordering and building it in April
Do you plan on overclocking? Yes, just a little (advice wanted)
Do you need an Operating System? I need windows 7 home
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Not right now, but I would like to keep the possibility open for later. (advice wanted)
Where are you buying your parts from? PixMania.com

Your Processor does not fit in your motherboard since the processor is intel and the motherboard is AMD.
Getting a 2700k is pointless because you are just going to overclock a 2600k more than 100 MHZ anyway so the extra money spent here is pointless.
A 2600k is $100 more than an i5-2500k which has identical performance in gaming. Realize that if you want the 2600k, as far as streaming and most applications are concerned, you are investing 100 bucks for an improvement to streaming ability. I also note that the 2500k is a fine at streaming, though I will grant that the 2600k's hyperthreading does indeed provide a notable impact.
You will need a P67 or Z68 motherboard to overclock. I recommend an ASRock Pro 3 P67 for its price, particularly considering you only want to overclock lightly. I do not recommend SLI or Crossfire or advocate it, but with a $2000 budget I should note that it will be inside your budget. However for reasons at the end I will abstain from making a recommendation.
If Overclocking at all however you will need a 3rd party cooler since the stock cooler is very bad. I recommend Hyper 212+.
I can't find that SSD available. I recommend a Crucial M4 over that SSD anyway for its reliability.
You do not need a 2gb graphics card because gaming on 2 monitors is retarded since there will always be a bezel in the center of the screen. That being said, your budget is so high you can afford a 7970 no problem which has more than 2gb anyway. If you are looking for an optimal bang for buck, the normal 560 ti can be had for around $200 dollars, but I am having a hard time understanding how much money you are trying to withhold from the end budget. 6950 is also a good buy if you can find one, which you generally can't now. 7870 is also a good deal. Since your upgrade cycle is a frenetic 2 years (many users hold onto PC's for around 5 years) I am also having a hard time recommending hardware.
Your RAM is overpriced since 1600 mhz ram is not necessary. Check for the cheapest 1333 RAM you can find and go with that, should be able to mark off about $20 here.
For a PSU I recommend something like a Corsair 650W , just in case you decide to go crossfire anyway, but if you did not I would recommend a much much lower wattage PSU. I don't know whats available in Denmark though. Or for what pricing.
OK lets rock talk about Crossfire/SLI. ATM the technology is imperfect so while the performance gains from it are nice, they are largely performance gains on paper only because of problems like micro stuttering, compatibility, and other hardware related issues that prevent the tech from shining. Also you only have 2 monitors, so you would have to add one more monitor to have an eyefinity setup. Which can be done on your budget.
For a case it depends on your tastes by I usually see the CoolerMaster HAF 912 recommend for its value and features.
I would strongly recommend spending a lot of the budget on not the build itself as well. Such as a nice mechanical keyboard, and good mouse (good mice are very hard to come by). Also if you dont have one, a proper desk, and particularly a good computer chair. These will improve your quality of life by a substantial amount trust me.
However your first build pick is throwing me for somewhat of a loop here since we seem to be in a situation where your needs are small compared to how much you value spare money (which is good). Having posters supply TL with an "opening build" helps us get into your mind. However knowing that you went and greased your loins to handle a $2000 bill if necessary.

Thanks for the feedback I will try to implement it as soon as i have time and come up with a better build. I think i am going to go with the 2600k, do you have any suggestions?
I have looked at the ASRock Pro 3 P67, but i would like to get a mobo with room for 2 gpus, Right now i will only buy one, but i would like to leave room for an upgrade, dose the P67 have two slots or do you know any?
thx for the advice on RAM, would there be any reason to go over 8gb?
I am going to get a good mouse keyboard but that is a discussion for at different thead :D
Thanks for the help

Hey Guys! I would like to "surprise" myself with a new rig for my birthday this summer. That's the reason why I'm asking you what parts should I buy. I'm from Hungary so I made some calculations and my budget is about 2200-2300 USD = 500.000-525.000 HUF (Hungarian Forint). I'm aiming to play Guild Wars 2 when it comes, otherwise I play WoW/BF3/Skyrim. I also use Photoshop. My resolution is 1920x1080 and I got a 2nd monitor for tasking what is running in 1680x1050. I play on the big one of course I'm not planning to upgrade the new computer in 2 years or so...that's why I would like to buy a good rig for a loooong time use with no problems. I thought about SLI but I think the best way that I buy a decent GPU and buy another one later if I have FPS issues in the future. I love music so I'd like to throw a nice and cheap sound card for my 5.1. I hope this is enough as information
Thanks in advance and sorry for my English!
Have a great day, Tom

I'd probably buy the computer from hardwareversand.de assuming there would be no extra cost apart from the delivery. However if you want me to suggest something for a hungarian site you should link one.
Either way you'd probably be looking at something like i5 2500k, asrock p67 pro3, thermalright true spirit, 8gb 1333 mhz 1.5v ram(cheapest), bitfenix shinobi case(or similiar), super flower golden green 450w power supply, GTX 560 Ti or HD 7850 graphics card, a Crucial m4 SSD drive along with a larger drive for storage(maybe reuse an old one) OR just get this if you want a cheap one: http://www1.hardwareversand.de/articledetail.jsp?aid=30365&agid=1283 very cheap with current prices but still I think a computer with that budget deserves more. Oh and finally a cheap DVD RW drive, usually the cheapest one is the best to get.

In cuba the 6970 is around the same price as the gtx 570 (390-420 CUC), and there is only like 30$ more if you wanna buy a "EVGA 580GTX Superclocked" (copy pasted it since its the only 580 available and dunno if its even new), the 6950 seems like the best choice considering the OP and comparing it to the other 3 it just looks so inexpensive....like 80-100 bucks cheaper... i only want it to play games and watch movies and stuff like that, i can play most games on ultra settings with it right?

That's not even remotely similar to what Shikyo suggested, nor is it a good choice of components.
- last-gen 1366 instead of 1155, worse performance for similar pricing, maybe even higher since I think LGA 1366 mobo's still cost more - 2133 RAM why? 1333/1600 is fine - the case is pretty... meh... for what it costs... just get a Corsair, Fractal, Bitfenix, CoolerMaster, NZXT, Antec P280, etc... - GTX 580 isn't really a good buy unless HD 7950 is way more expensive - 1000W PSU is overkill, a 850W unit would be plenty with tons of overhead for overclocking both a 2500k and SLI 580's/7950's (750 for 7950's). And not CoolerMaster..... Corsair HX/AX, Antec High Current Pro, NZXT Hale, XFX, OCZ ZT, Seasonic X, and many others that I'm surely missing and are available in Europe (I'm not too faimilar with SuperFlower)... all better choices - if you're gonna get a sound card, don't get a Creative IMO

Well I love this topic! Don't have to wait days for answers. Thank you for the information. I will make another setup from what they have in that shop in Hungary with the knowledge I just acquired I chose that case because I thought it'll need heavy cooling and that case has watercooling. I've found a PSU calculator on ASUS website and it advised 950W that's why I thought 1000 is OK. Sound card isn't really necessary though I was wondering a cheap sound card is still better than an integrated one.
Anyway, thanks for all the support and help!
I'll ask you later on if I have any other questions!

Thermaltake Level 10GT does not come equipped with water cooling. It is advertised as water cooling ready -_- A case that comes equipped with water cooling would cost thousands.
|
You don't need to set up water cooling for a simple setup like that. Maybe for SLI 580's if you really wanted to overclock them a lot. But custom loops are expensive and for 99.999% of people air cooling is cheap, effective, and if you buy the right stuff, very quiet.
|
@bupp4 you really should tell us where you're looking at lists of components so we can provide a little more detailed advice.
@xerox - the 6950 should be plenty to do what you want it to do. So you can just stick with that. However, if you between the 570, 6970, and 580, the 580 is definitely worth a $30 upgrade over them. But not a $100 upgrade over a 6950. It'll do most games on 'ultra' settings at 1920x1080. For some of the hardest games (BF3) you might end up using 'high' or 'ultra' with AA turned off.
In the states, the 6950, if you could find it, was about $220, the 6970 and 570 roughly $300, and the 580 is roughly $450. So that 580 is relatively 'cheap.' But the 6950 should be plenty of power.

I think my question may have been missed last time so I will put in again. I was looking at the bitfenix shinobi today and noticed another product in there line that I liked the look of better. The bitfenix survivor. Just wondering if anyone has had any experiences with it or know if its a decent case?
