This isn't the case for the HD 7950 as it only requires 2x6pin and most cards should come with at least 1 adapter, though there are exceptions - XFX for example usually doesn't provide adapters.

If you're not doing CrossfireX right off the bat, I'd suggest you buy a new monitor, get a Noctua NH-D14 maybe, and maybe a P8Z68-V.

The great thing about a 128GB hard drive is that you can pretty much put all your programs (unless you have a ton of them) on the SSD and your media files on the HDD.

Install windows and your most frequently used programs on your ssd. SSD is just like a normal harddrive except there are no moving parts and theyre a lot faster. thats all you need to know

The is there an advantage for me to get a higher end video card? Would getting a higher end video card now be worth it if I plan to upgrade my screen in the future?

This depends on what your current card is, how high-end you're talking about, and when you are buying a new monitor. If you aren't buying a new monitor soon than the only reason to upgrade to a higher-end card right now is that your current card is shit. Kepler hasn't been released while Tahiti is in limited supply.

At first I was planning on putting together a setup with in i5 2500 and a GeForce GTX 580. However, I remembered that I needed to match my videocard to my monitor according to the OP the GTX 580 is not to be paired up with the 1680x1050 monitor. I was trying to figure out if I should downgrade to a gtx 550 and hope it's good for now and the next several years--or if I should get something nicer now so that several years from now I simply need to replace the monitor instead of replacing the videocard.

I'm not sure why you're deciding between a $130 card and a $500 card.... there are half a dozen options in-between that would probably be much better choices for you. GTX 550 Ti is a bad value anyways so you don't even want to look at that. A Radeon HD6850 or 6870 for around $140, $170 respectively will allow you to play on reasonably high at your current resolution and still do decently well at 1080p. In several years, you'll want to upgrade your graphics card anyways if you intend on playing the latest games regardless if you buy a new monitor or not... If you're building a new configuration, it would be in your best interest to answer the questions in the OP and post what you had in mind (list of components) so that you don't end up wasting tons of money for no reason.

Oh lord! I didn't know how outdated my research was lol! Thank god I came here before I started plopping down my cash on stuff. What is your budget? >$1000.00 preferable. Technically able to pay more—but but I’d rather pay less if possible. What is your resolution? 1680x1050. It’s a hand me down from several years ago. I'm not really attached to it--but I assume it would be cheaper to not replace the monitor and simply get a graphics card that fit. What are you using it for? Gaming. Mostly SC2 (almost solely actually). I’d also like to be able to watch HD videos/streams because it’s getting annoying that I’m only really able to watch 260 without lagging. What is your upgrade cycle? This will be my first “upgrade cycle” where I actually buy parts. Everything I had before this is a hand me down except for the GeForce 9600 GSO I got for the sole purpose of having a graphics card that would actually run SC2 (albeit it is at the lowest graphics setting and if creep spreads halfway through Tal’Darim or Shakuras my PC starts freezing up) In essence, I don’t really upgrade much and I normally play almost all my games at the lowest settings. However, I wanted to try having an up to date system for once in my life. So although I’m planning to upgrade it as time passes—it will most likely be very slowly. When do you plan on building it? Personally? ASAP. Realistically? I want to get it by the end of the month/beginning of next month. Do you plan on overclocking? I’ve never really played my games past lowest setting graphics so I’m not planning on overclocking it without a good argument for it and only if it doesn’t raise the cost of the setup too much. Do you need an Operating System? I’d like Windows 7. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Not really. Where are you buying your parts from? I was planning on Newegg unless there is a better place to do it. I live in California USA if it matters.

Well any modern desktop processor you will be buying with the intention of gaming will be capable of easily handling 1080p content given that your internet isn't dial up or the lowest tier of DSL. This is $757 before mail in rebates, free shipping on every component: The Radeon HD6850 will be capable of handling Starcraft II on ultra and other games reasonably well at 1080p. If you have no intention of streaming (not watching but actually streaming your games for other people to watch) than you can save some money and get a core i3 2100 instead of a core i5 2500 as Starcraft II does not utilize the four cores provided by the core i5. Either way, you have enough money to get a new monitor. I'd only suggest the Dell Ultrasharp U2312HM which is currently on sale for $230: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&sku=320-2807 It's easily one of the best monitors for ~$200 so don't purchase a shitty TN monitor. Two reviews of the monitor can be found at http://www.prad.de/en/monitore/review/2011/review-dell-u2312hm.html and http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2312hm.htm The H67 motherboard provides SATA 6Gbps which will be useful for adding a SSD later. Antec Earthwatts 500D is a good deal at $50 right now and is capable of powering all core i5 2500 with new single GPU configurations.
