Maximum ~$1800 What is your resolution? 1920x1080 (Pretty sure its 1080p, its an ASUS LED VE247) What are you using it for? Heavy gaming and streaming for the most part (like 98%), and then possibly a little editing every now and then (nothing huge though). What is your upgrade cycle? Don't really have one ahah, this is my first computer I'm buying by myself. I would say 3/4/5 years most likely, as I want this computer to last me a while while I'm at school. When do you plan on building it? Somewhere around April 1st Do you plan on overclocking? Yes, probably only the CPU (maybe GPU if I get help) Do you need an Operating System? Yup. Just Windows 7 Home is fine. Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? Yup. I was hoping to use two 6870's in crossfire. Where are you buying your parts from? I'm going to try and look at CanadaComputers because they have a store right by my house. If not, I'll order from NewEgg or anywhere else I can find that is near by.

Are you joking, have you even taken a peak at pricing? Doing Radeon HD6870 Crossfire with a ~$1800 budget and a shitty 1080p screen is beyond retarded since: 1. A single card is more than enough to play most games on reasonably high settings at 1080p and it also has the benefit of not having to deal with retarded CrossfireX profiles and higher noise/heat. 2. CrossfireX 6870 comes no where close to $1800 unless you want to get ripped off or overkill on every other component. Though there is some good reason for the latter but I don't think that's what you had in mind since you were considering Ibuypower before. But I'm sure you can find the link on their website. Yes I found the assembly link, and they even included it at the end of the order ![]()

Currently I'm using: i3-2100 hd6850 antec green 380w h61 mobo 4gb no name ddr3 crappy $5-10 case 40"LCD TV monitor (will probably sell/trade for more funds) I'm planning on: - $300-400 monitor (no idea, maybe benq?) - $400-500 gpu (not sure, maybe 7950/7970 or gtx580?) - $200 cpu (2500k?) - $50-80 PSU (whatever deals show up for a good 500-600w) - $20-50 case (maybe haf922 or antec300) - $0-200 misc stuff (keyboard/mouse/etc.) Any suggestions or advice? Am I missing anything?

I would consider just an HD 7950, no CPU upgrade, no motherboard upgrade, no power supply upgrade (unnecessary considering 7950 and i3-2100 power draws, or even 7970 and i3-2100 so long as the 7970 isn't overclocked a lot). Depending on the design of the graphics card and how the old chassis really is, a new one may be warranted. Take your pick of the BenQ XL2420T, Asus VG236H, Samsung S23A700D, or something like that.

I would love to save some money, but I'm a little concerned about a few things. Is an i3 really enough to hit 100+fps on max settings 1080p without getting CPU bottlenecked? Also, is there any danger with running a 7950/7970 with a 380w power supply? What's the point of getting a 500w+ psu if you can run the fastest GPUs with 380w?

There's no danger running pretty much any single-GPU with a quality 380w power supply, if you're not overclocking or using a power-hungry processor. The point of 500w+ power supplies are to run systems that need more power (2 GPUs or whatever reason). Also, many crappy power supplies claim to be 500w or whatever but will actually produce less usable power than your 380w system. Edit: So if you get a new processor (preferably waiting for the next generation in late april), a new motherboard, a new gpu, and if you overclock the processor you might also consider a new power supply, not sure how much ivy bridge will need, then really, you might as well just build a whole new system rather than 'upgrade.' Then you can give your current computer to the most deserving person you like. Or sell it for more than its worth to some sucker, I suppose. No reason to wait on the monitor upgrade if you're unhappy with your current one though.

Looking up load power consumption on anantech, I see that the 7950 sits somewhere around 350w load and the 7970 sits around 390w http://www.anandtech.com/show/5476/amd-radeon-7950-review/16 I realize that these benchmarks are probably done with processors that use more power than an i3-2100, but still those numbers are a little scary coming from a 380w psu. Is that number an average power consumption value or is it peak power consumption? I also run quite a few USB powered peripherals. Am I really going to be okay just upgrading GPU/monitor and nothing else? What is the worst case scenario if I exceed 380w load? Will my PSU just die or is it going to explode and set my apartment on fire

Will my PSU just die or is it going to explode and set my apartment on fire Anandtech provides graphs for under load during a gaming scenario and under load during Furmark (100% GPU usage). These figures are measured in AC (measured at the wall), your power supply is DC. If you take the figures at face value (so your power supply is 100% efficient) then you still have some headroom as you have a Sandybridge core i3 while Anandtech uses an overclocked Sandybridge-E (hex core with hyperthreading), the difference between these two processors is easily 100w or more (easily three times more). USB runs off the 5v rail. Most other components such as GPU and CPU run off 12v. The 380w value on your Earthwatts and any other quality unit is rated for continuous so there's not going to be a nuclear meltdown if you exceed this value slightly.

Will my PSU just die or is it going to explode and set my apartment on fire Let me help you feel safer about this: 1) Their system is using a Core i7-3960X @ 4.3GHz on a EVGA X79 SLI. The CPU alone probably draws more than twice as much power than the i3, probably triple. I'd expect ~100W under load for the 3960x [edit: at least] (i3 probably ~30-40). The mobo is also fancier with extra chipsets and stuff to power so that's another 20W easy over a basic H61. 2) That's total system power consumption from the wall. Even if the PSU is running at 90% efficiency at that load (It's a true power quattro, 80+ silver), that actually makes it ~351W. Subtract about 50W or more because of their CPU and mobo. You can expect ~300W under load with an i3, at most I would say - this with a stock 7970. Obviously this leaves little room for overclocking the 7970. I would overclock it but not over-volt it. And if you exceed 380W nothing bad happens, but don't do it continuously. The 380D is capable of being overloaded a bit, so it will be loud and the exhaust air will be hot. If you go too high, some protection will kick in and shut it down safely. But as explained above, you won't go over.
