Not planning on changing it.What are you using it for?Gaming, want to play SC2 at highest settings, Lineage2(a lot of players in one place, think it's processor-heavy), wanna start Diablo3 and maybe some new games like Skyrim or whatever. I'd like to fraps as well and maybe stream(not in HD) if I get a better connection in the future. I also use some mapping programs for games. And I generally like to run shitton of tabs at Chrome with 28373287492 programs running at once. What is your upgrade cycle?Well, my current PC has been built in 2005 or 2006, except for gpu which was bought in like 2008 or 2009. But I don't think my needs will grow in time. When do you plan on building it?Within the next 2-3 months.Do you plan on overclocking?I have not OCd my current PC, dunno if I even need it.Do you need an Operating System?Nope. Got access to Win7 32 and Win7 64.Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?Nope.Where are you buying your parts from? Most likely polish(since it's where I reside right now) internet shop - gral.pl. unfortunately there's no ENG version of this site.I already have a 24" 16:10 screen and might buy a new monitor to get a dual screen setup(suggestions for the second one - around 21" can be 16 HD - would be much welcome). Already have a mouse and a keyboard. Got a 1TB HDD for data. Regarding building a pc in general: Do I need an extra cooling for the cpu? Do I need some kind of thermal paste for the processor? Do I need cables? Generally, what else would I need to buy in order to have the PC running? Here's what I've put up together(site is in polish, but I guess the numbers and names speak for themselves): CPU: Intel Core i5 2500K 4x3.30 GHz BOX (LGA1155, 6MB, HD3000, 95W) MOBO: Gigabyte GA-P67A-D3, P67, DDR3, SATA3, USB 3.0, RAID, GBLAN, ATX, LGA1155 RAM: DDR3 4GB 2000MHz Corsair Vengeance XMP (2x2GB, DualDDR, CL10) SSD: Corsair Force Series 90GB, 2.5", SATA3 550MB/s, 500MB/s DVD: LG GH22NS70 DVD±R 22x, DVD+RW 8x, CD-RW 32x, DVD+R DL 12x, DVD-RAM 12x, OEM, SATA, Black GPU: GeForce GTX550Ti Gigabyte 1024MB, DDR5, HDMI, DVI, PCI-E CASE: Antec Three Hundred (bez zasilacza) PSU: ATX 600W Corsair CMPSU-600CXV2EU (Fan 140mm) Feedback would be much appreciated. Cheers.
An aftermarket heatsink is recommended (required) for overclocking a 2500k.
Thermal paste is included with the heatsink but you can buy something better if you wish.
All cables are included with the retail components and you should have left over SATA cables from your previous computer. There is nothing extra to buy, everything is included with retail packaging.
Paying a lot of money for better memory when you can't afford flagship components is one of the stupidest things you can do since memory frequency and timing have a negligible impact on performance. 1333MHz cas9 memory is going to cost significantly less and give you maybe 2 less FPS. If you do a lot of multi-tasking, which I'm starting to doubt you do since most multi-taskers wouldn't settle for anything less than 2x4gb in 2012.
Not sure of pricing in Poland or how much you're even paying... GTX 550 Ti is generally shit since you can get the same performance (6770, 7750) for less or better performance (6850, GTX 460) for slightly more.
A 600w unit is not necessary. Get a ~500w unit that's of better quality than the CXv2 for the same price or get the 500w variant of the CXv2 for less.

I don't get why you go for that kind of RAM but you totally won't need it, you'd be much better off with 1333-1600 mhz 8gb ram with 1.5v voltage
Is that a Corsair Force GT or 3?
Your graphics card is way weaker than what I'd get
That case is outdated and generally I'd recommend bitfenix shinobi instead
That PSU has more wattage than necessary for you even if you go with a decent processor
The mobo is ok but asrock p67 pro3 for instance should be better if it's around the same price
I'm not sure why you didn't include links or prices but I'm way too lazy to manually check those so I can't really comment on that.
For graphics card I would suggest something like 6950 or GTX 560 Ti and for RAM just get something like corsair 1600mhz 8gb 1.5v, the cheapest one. You also want a heatsink and I'd suggest hyper 212+, thermalright true spirit, or freezer 13 pro

Hi guys, I'm pretty newbie at computers, so please help me out
What is your budget?
700-800
What is your resolution?
1680x1050 is my default at the moment
What are you using it for?
gaming mostly
What is your upgrade cycle?
1.5-2 years
When do you plan on building it?
around this week, possibly
Do you plan on overclocking?
Nope
Do you need an Operating System? nope
Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? probably not
Where are you buying your parts from? tigerdirect.ca
|
Are you from the states or Canada? You list tigerdirect.ca (which is for Canada) but your profile specifies you're from the states. Are you limited to buying from Tigerdirect or are you open to buying from other retailers? Tigerdirect.ca is pretty terrible.
|
I'm in Canada at the moment.
Is there something wrong with tigerdirect.ca? Unfortunately, I'm limited to tigerdirect.ca atm .
|
Tigerdirect pricing is pretty horrible and they're one of the few Canadian retailers that do not offer pricematching.

It will work, but it's not ideal, for long-term reliability. You can easily switch around the RAM and get a different CPU combo, for lesser price: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820161468http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.822375Are you sure about spending that little on the monitor, or getting something that's actually a resolution like 1280x1024? For that total build cost, I'd consider getting an i3 and a better monitor, than an i5 and a worse monitor. I'd think the i5 is a decent investment though, even for SC2 (because of L3 cache really, not the extra cores), so I'd recommend keeping the i5 and just reconsider the monitor price range.
Thank you for the response. I will go with that combo then.
That makes sense what you're saying about the monitor. I think I am going to go with this monitor skyR recommended in the monitor thread:
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=320-2807
The cost isn't too bad, and it's the right size and resolution I'm looking for

Yeah, I know what Crossfire is, but I meant that he likes it more than SLI and nvidia cards in general. I know that going Xfire/SLI is a bad idea when you're not OCing, but I just want a general build outline since I'm out of date on computers lately. I still need to talk to him about it and we're gonna change some things around before he buys it.

I can't RMA my corsair because i need my computer for homework, and I don't want to pay for shipping and handling and have them send me another unit that does the same loud whistle once i power off the computer, I've read the forums on Corsairs costumer support and there are many people who have RMA'd their 430x's and are receiving new corsairs that still exhibit LOUD coil whine after the computer is turned off, the reason why I posted again was not to complain, but to ask where is it that I disable the CE1 in the bios, I can't find it , I only found "intel side stepping" and "power saving feature" , otherwise, the product is working fine, and i've been shutting off my computer from behind everynight to not hear the coil whine, so it's not that bad, I was trying to fix it that's all. I doesn't whine at all when it is on, I also wanted to know if it is bad to turn off the power switch once my computer is off, i don't want to damage the valuable components because of a cheap PSU.

Not sure what your buddy means that tigerdirect has best pricing. Their pricing on computer components are similar to that of Newegg.

Turning the power switch to off does not involve any additional risk to the components inside.
And its not a cheap PSU, its a defective PSU. Cheap would have been like $15.

Where are you buying your parts from? newegg but would get individual parts elseware if cheaper I am by no means good at this. This is the first time I'm gonna try this for someone on TL, purely because I'm not in school today and I'm a bit bored Skyr or somebody can proofread my build, and make sure that I didn't do anything wrong. (Particularly in the mobo/PSU since I don't know a ton about them still.) PSU: Rosewill Capstone 550W http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182068&Tpk=rosewill capstone 550w (I'm pretty sure this is overkill though. Rosewill Capstone 450W is a better choice I believe. I think there are cheaper options but here is something you can do for sure.) Mobo: MSI P67 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130583 (I'm not very certain on this either.) RAM: 8GB Pareema http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820576006 (Cheapest 8GB Ram) Case: HAF 912 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233 (Nice cheap case, if you want something sleeker/noise dampened fractal design refine r3 is nice) ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811352013 ) CPU: i5 2500k http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072Now, if you want an SSD: SSD: Crucial M4 128 GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148442 (I am not sure if this is the best choice for the given mobo, but if it isn't, it will be a problem with the mobo. Again, Skyr or myrmidon can fix any issues I have.) GPU: Sapphire 6870 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102948 This runs up about 900$ before windows 7. If you want to drop the SSD: You can probably get a 7950 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102962 and run up about 1k. I don't think I forgot anything. But this is just an idea, let Skyr give you a great build, or at least doublecheck what I've given. I'm pretty certain about most things except for the Mobo (which I'm just not sure what brand would be the best/what is priced right) and the PSU (don't know all of the good units, but I know the one I gave you would work. So I just might have wasted a bit of money in those categories.) Doing SLI / Crossfire for Diablo 3 and Starcraft II is a stupid idea because these games are a joke on graphics requirements. I suggest you drop the idea and get an Asrock P67 Pro3 instead: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157230Core i5 2500k for $200: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=57962&promoid=1315Coolermaster HAF 912 for $50: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=55583&promoid=1315An aftermarket heatsink for overclocking is missing, you'll want a Coolermaster Hyper 212+ for $23: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=41337&promoid=1315Plextor M3 128gb is at $160 again < this is HOT and probably won't last long: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820249014Sapphire HD6870 and PNY 2x4GB for $198: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.817328 Ok this is what i have so far core i5 2500k: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072Coolermaster HAF 912: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233Coolermaster hyper 212 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168351030658 GB RAM http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178333ASRock P67 PRO3 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157230Rosewill 550-capstone http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182068Western Digital 500 GB sata 6GB/s http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136769GeForce 560 Ti 448 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130738Comes out to 1002.91 minus mail in rebates includin win 7 64bit. Probably will get the CPU from NCIX to save the money on that. Thoughts? Am i missing anything? Probably goin to pick up a monitor too but still tryin to figure that out. Having trouble decidin between 21.5" and 23". Buddy says tigerdirect has best prices Why only buy the processor from NCIX? The case and heatsink, heatsink, and operating system are also less expensive there. Not sure what your buddy means that tigerdirect has best pricing. Their pricing on computer components are similar to that of Newegg. GTX 560 Ti 448 is overkill for Diablo III but okay.
SkyR so that 560 ti 448 is completly overkill? The 6870 you speced out will be more than enough to max SC2 and Diablo 3 along with a second monitor? I am just having a little video card enby buddy go ta 570 but if i don't need it i'll save the money. Thanks for the help,
