Thank you skyR! I didn't look at Newegg because I thought MC had the best prices. Here's my new build. I'm ready to order it so long as nothing is wrong with it.

CPU: Intel i5 2500k $179.99

GPU: Radeon HD 6870 $169.99

Mobo: Asrock H61-M LGA 1155 $54.99

RAM: Crucial 2x4GB $39.99

HDD: Caviar Blue 500 GB $89.99

PSU: Corsair 430W $44.99

DVD: DVD Burner $15.99

Case: Cooler master ATX Mid $59.99

Total: $655.92+shipping= $665.87

Monitor: 20" LCD $99.99

With Monitor: $765.86

Will all of this work together? Thanks again!

o.o why are you getting a i5 2500k if you're not overclocking??? You might as well get a i5 2400 and spend the rest on a better GPU or a SSD....

@fatfail

i5-2500k @ us.ncix.com ($200)
Asrock z68 mobo @ newegg.com (not sure which, $95-115)
Aftermarket heatsink in case the old doesn't fit @newegg: Coolermaster 212 or quieter ($30+)
2x4gb RAM @newegg ~$35
Some DVD-burner since you didn't specify salvage@ us.ncix.com ~$17
(presumably the PSU is decent)

I mean, you can get an i3 and an SSD, which might be better for a lot of tasks because of the SSD, but why not top out on processor if you still stay under budget? You can still get a small sata2 ssd if you want to go up to $500, or wait and upgrade with a large SSD in a few months time when you save up more.

Sorry I don't have time to give specific links.

@josh_rakoons

I may end up getting the i5-2400 instead. It's $30 cheaper, and i'm guessing it's not a large step down in power from the i5 2500k. Is there a noticeable difference between the two? I'm not going to be stressing my computer greatly.

Unless you're overclocking, there is no or very small difference.

micro center gives you 50 off any z68 motherboards if you buy an i5-2500k. something like this one : http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0375352
i'm not real knowledgeable on which motherboards are good so maybe someone else can comment

so if you get the i5-2500k, you will pay the same for the mother board, but with better options. even if you aren't overclocking, getting usb 3.0 and 2 sata3 ports might be worth it to get the i5-2500k

Thank you for the reply! Without the ssd, the total cost of build is less than 400! Ram sure is cheap nowadays. I will probably listen to your suggestion and get an i5, and upgrade to an ssd later if necessary. I think with overclocking, the i5 should beat the i3 by quite a lot, right?

yep, for desktops:
i3 = 2 cores with hyperthreading
i5 = 4 cores, K-suffix=overclocking

So it'll be better than the i3 in games like SC2, because it overclocks to a higher speed. It'll be better than the i3 in games like Shogun 2: Total War because of the larger number of cores, and for most games that don't need a hot-shot CPU it'll the the exact same . Both games are still playable on an i3. In both cases the i5 will do better mostly with larger numbers of units (late game 3v3, 4v4 in SC2, large armies in Shogun 2).

Thanks a lot wallet!! I plan on getting the 2500k, and also this motherboard since I get fifty off of it.

Z68 1155 mATX

Will all my other components work with it? I want to place the order soon, if possible.

Thanks

The AsRock Z68 Pro3-M for $105 before the discount is a decent price. That would be my pick if you were to get something for an i5-2500k to overclock. You still want an aftermarket heatsink like a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus though. Pretty much any tower-style cooler with a 120mm fan is what you want.

As mentioned, MicroCenter prices on things other than CPUs and motherboards is no good. If you must get a power supply from there, avoid the TR2. I'd strongly consider the much superior (though not without potential issues) Antec High Current Gamer 520W:

Thanks Myrmidon, I plan on taking a trip to MC tonight. I'll get the 2500k and the mobo.

Will the 430W power supply be enough for my build?

Alright, so my motherboard blew. Can you guys give me a recommendation?

Requirements:

Has two PCI-E slots (with space between so they can both accommodate dual slot cards)
4 Ram slots (dual channel)
AM3
Has USB3.0
Has SATA3

Must be from a reliable manufacturer.

i get so jelous just by looking at those prices......thats one of the worst things about living here...

Yes but the Radeon HD6870 requires two 6pin PCIe connectors and the CX430V2 only has one so you would be required to use a 6pin PCIe to molex adapter.

You may just want to get a Radeon HD6850 since your resolution is going to be 1600x900 and not 1080p.

Specify a manufacturer because the word "reliable" is so vague.

What CPU, and is it overclocked? AM3 has a huge range of power requirements.

You don't need a 600w unit. For convenience sake, you just want a unit with two 6pin PCIe connectors such as the CX500V2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139027

AMD Phenom II x6 1090t, not overclocked nor do I intend to overclock.

I apologize, I just want a motherboard that is known for not failing a lot.

So with that in mind, what are your recommendations?

Well if you're mentioning spacing for dual-slot somethings, I assume you have or seriously plan on using two graphics cards? Then I hope you're not bothering with midrange models, so you don't want to use x16/x4?

To get at least x8 on the second graphics card requires something more expensive, like this:
