What is your budget? 2000$ CAN What is your resolution? I already use an Asus VE247h - 24'in (1920X1080) as a second monitor on my laptop so i can just use this monitor for my new PC What are you using it for? Gaming/Graphic Design - - Also maybe in the future getting into 3D / max/maya/ etc. What is your upgrade cycle? 3 years? Do you plan on overclocking? yes Do you need an Operating System? yes Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? not sure... Where are you buying your parts from? ncix.com • CPU - ? • Motherboard - ? • Ram - 4gb or more • GPU - Radeon HD 7970 or 7950... friend told me to get one of these... • PSU - depends on the other things ? • CASE - nothing fancy looking - good air flow? • HSF - not sure what is good enough for my budget since im missing so much stuff... • HDD/SSD - 7200RPM hdd 2tb? and i do want an SSD as i would think it will make a difference in using multiple adobe applications... • Overclocking - yes - i think i need a keyboard to so i need a cheap one for gaming... *** Okay so I know im missing alot of things up there... I just having trouble deciding what i need... also i have never built a pc from parts as ive only had a laptop as my 1st computer... from looking at ncix's custom pc > Enthusiast/Extreme Gaming is were i would fall... i guess.. so this is what im starting to look at first is... playing around thier custom built ones... all in all i need some advice... =)

Yes, you want a SSD with this budget. It would be stupid to not get one. Crucial M4 (your best option since it's available at NCIX and the one that's most widely available in Canada), Intel 510, Plextor M3, or Samsung 830 should be your #1 choices for SSDs. 2x4gb is the minimum you want for new configurations since memory is so inexpensive. You can add more later if you find yourself needing more for editing. Your friend is right that with your budget, you would only want to look at getting a Radeon HD7970. Though it is overkill for 1080p gaming. For CPU and motherboard, I guess you'll build on the LGA1155 platform with a core i7 2600k (~$300) and a P8Z68-V maybe (~$160) since LGA2011 is sort of out of reach unless you want to sacrifice in other areas. LGA1155 will be stuck with quads while LGA2011 will be expandable to octo cores so keep this in mind. The extra cores may prove to be useful if you are doing heavy editing in the future. Cases that offer good airflow, sound dampening, and an elegant design include but not limited to Fractal Design Define R3 (~$110), Antec P280 (~$120), and Corsair Obsidian 550D (~$160). Seasonic X is a nice option for a high-end power supply, X660 is currently $120. 80+ gold, fully modular, and a five year warranty. If you want to pay extra for a near identical unit but with a seven year warranty instead, the Corsair AX650 (built by Seasonic) is only $10 more. For heatsink, you want a Noctua NH-D14 for $80. Look into getting a Dell Ultrasharp (U2312HM goes on sale often for under $200, U2412M also goes on sale often for under $300, U2711 has been on sale for under $700) It would be a real shame to pair such a nice configuration with a shitty TN monitor.

IDK about the quality though, thermaltake usually doesn't make awful PSU's right? Also, got a DVD drive?

Well, I have heard bad things about their PSUs but I also have heard some good things too. So I really don't know. Edit: Maybe I got lucky on this one.

Wallet on the last page said z68 mobo's, so I don't know if that's an option or not, just letting you know. I'll have to check this out when I go to Denver Tuesday. Thanks ![]()

It's not a bad idea to have a backup power supply, so I'd consider picking up this OCZ ZS 550W for $55 shipped here (before an additional $25 mail-in rebate): http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=62391&promoid=1029

That includes the TR2 600W W0388RU in question. There's certainly much worse out there, but it's nothing that anybody should be purchasing. I'll check out it and thanks for your help Myrmidon.

I'm looking at spending around $500, hopefully maybe a little more if needed. What is your resolution? 1440 x 900 What are you using it for? General Gaming. Would like to run Dota2 at decent settings. Other than that not too peculiar. What is your upgrade cycle? Probably 2 years. I'm about to graduate college and this just needs to last me until I find a nice paying job and then I can look to upgrade (hopefully!) When do you plan on building it? Relatively soon, my poor laptop is dying a quick and painful death T_T Do you plan on overclocking? Nope. Do you need an Operating System? Sadly, yes T_T Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire? What? Sorry I'm horribad computer newbie. So no, I guess not ![]() Where are you buying your parts from? Newegg, I guess. Live in Atlanta so if anybody thinks of anything cheaper, it would be appreciated. Thanks for the time! This thread is great!

The case is an NXZT Phantom with every possible fan except the 200mm side fan, since it wouldn’t fit together with the Cooler Master Hyper 212 HSF, and room temperature is around 18 degrees Celsius. Speed of intake fans is close to minimum, a little higher for exhaust fans - since I seem to recall that it should be the ideal setting in order to achieve maximum cooling - and the HSF blows air directly towards the back 140mm fan. I started with the “fast” setting, and upon rebooting, the multiplier was set to x43, with a CPU voltage of 1.195, BLCK at 100 and DDR voltage at 1.5 (VCCSA Voltage: 0.925, VCCIO Voltage: 1.05, CPU PLL Voltage: 1.80, PCH Voltage: 1.05, all data comes from what I can see under the TurboV EVO section of the Asus AI Suite, under “Manual Tuning”). I trusted the thing only to a certain extent, so I got myself Prime 95 and Realtemp and kept the rig under test for close to 50 minutes. The cores’ temperatures with system idle is around 25-27 degrees, and no core went above 64-65 C during the test, with a difference in temperature between cores no wider than 3-5 degrees. What I’m wondering is this: are these results too good to be true, or can I keep things as they are for a daily usage, which includes anything from audio/video editing to gaming? System looks very stable as far as I can tell, no problem detected whatsoever, no BSODs, no nothing - but I wouldn’t want things to come back and bite me in the ass a few months down the road. Thank you, and thanks again to everyone who keeps this thread so useful.
