Can't you get Windows through university? Like through a campus store, through MSDNAA (DreamSpark), Microsoft Student, or something like that? Generally there's an option cheaper than $95.
Also there are a couple Microcenters in the Atlanta area. Are there CPU/motherboard deals in-store on the lower-end processors? I forget. http://www.microcenter.com/at_the_stores/index.html

Are these parts you've already bought or are thinking about buying?

Yeah, are you really getting an FX-6100? It better be heavily discounted, or you better be running encodes nonstop on it (or something similar) and not so much games.
Who recommended the Seasonic? It's okay but the cables are a bit short and probably not suitable if your computer chassis has the power supply mounted on the bottom rather than the top. You may as well just get an Antec Neo Eco at that price, which is pretty much the same thing.
Most Corsair CX V2 shouldn't have whining noises, but some will. Same goes for about everything out there, but the rate of incidence seems to be a little higher for the CX V2 and most that do have strange noises tend not to have them with the computer turned off. At those prices I'd get the CX V2.
If you're really hunting for the best deal and are certain the cables are long enough, if you can get an order over $50 at NCIX to get the free shipping then Antec VP350 for $36.36 is probably best: http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=62871
It's the non-APFC version of this: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Antec/VP350P/1.html

2 questions for the techies! I'm mid customizing a desktop (i7 3.4 ghz/8 gig ram ddr3)
1) Is it worth paying $50 for an upgrade from a 1g ddr3 radeon to a 1g ddr5 radeon card? 2) usb 3.0, is it worth the difference? It's like $50 for the 2 usb 3.0's instead of 2.0's.

No? A DDR3 card with GDDR5 is still going to be shit for 1080p gaming. The memory does not make the card btw.. the amount of stream processors are much more important.
Only you would know if USB3 is worth the difference or not. If you don't have any devices that makes use of the transfer speed of USB3 than it's useless.

My father's birthday is coming up in about 2 weeks, and I'd like to buy him a laptop. He currently uses a really old desktop that is slow and overheats constantly. Rather than trying to fix it, I would rather just buy him a brand new computer, but I'm not well versed in what makes a good laptop (price-performance ratio, reliability, etc.). With that being said, I would appreciate any feedback with these things in mind:
- Won't be using for gaming or graphically/memory intensive applications - Will be using to connect to TV (youtube, netflix, displaying pictures, family videos, etc.) via HDMI cable - Reliability (I know with almost anything, certain models are prone to failure whether it's the manufacturer or just driver issues, but again, I'm not that knowledgeable in the world of laptops) - DVD/CD burner (but most laptops have this anyway, but just stating this in case)
We live in the United States, so Newegg/Amazon and any other retailers are applicable. Budget is no more than $600.

Is it just going to sit on the desk all of the time? Would he be using the laptop's screen, keyboard, what? If there's no use for the mobility, I wouldn't suggest a laptop because of the ergonomics (position of screen and keyboard), higher price, often bad screen and keyboard/trackpoint at that price point, and higher difficulty of fixing stuff and getting replacements.
Basically at that kind of price range you're probably looking for an small business / office oriented laptop (e.g. Lenovo Thinkpad Edge, HP ProBook, etc.), if you were to get one. Those are often not quite as fragile and trouble-prone as many of the general consumer models.

It wouldn't sit on a desk all the time. Yes, it is going to be a replacement for his desktop, but mobility is important so going the laptop route wouldn't be a waste. I know that laptops are more expensive for what you get than desktops, but we're not talking about a laptop for gaming purposes here. It's generally for portable use, as a media player/connecting to an external display (TV), and also because his desktop freaking sucks lol.
I'll take a look at those models and research more on it, thanks Myrm for the suggestions.

By the way the specs shouldn't matter really, but AMD A series is preferred for media stuff and is generally going to be cheaper than Intel. You want a 7200 rpm hard drive if possible, and probably 3-4 GB RAM is enough, and that's about all you need to know on that front.
Unfortunately we've gone backwards in quality and pretty much all laptops except more expensive models have 1366x768 resolution screens that range from annoying to terrible in quality. If possible, try something out in a store or carefully read reviews, since many laptops have keyboards that IMHO make it impossible to get anything done in a timely manner. It's hard to tell about build quality without actually using it.
I've used plenty of laptops and do recommend getting them if it makes sense, but there's just so much that can go wrong. Much more so than for desktop systems, you need to be careful of what you get.

Wow Sirajee! How many threads did you post this in? This advert is the kind of stuff that goes in a spam folder in people's email accounts.

Looking to complete my build because i'm buying these from a friend. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115078 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130592&Tpk=MSI H61M-E23
Budget: around 300$ (until the 1st when i get paid next) My current resolution: is 1280x720 but plan on an upgrade once i actually have a working pc to use on, Use: LoL, mild streaming, mmo's with PS mixed in. Upgrade cycle: 5 years ish. Plan on building it: ASAP unless my friend doesn't get his upgrades this week. Overclocking: Never done it but if i do my friend knows how. Buying from: Probably newegg but if there's better deals somewhere else who cares.
Basically looking for memory/video card atm. Anything else you really suggest will be considered.

FOr those purposes I'd go with a 6770 or a 6850, I don't see much sense in going higher. You could probably do 6870 if you really want to but even 6770 can max LoL so you're going to be needing to play some more demanding mmorpgs like the SW:TOR
|
Yeah SW:TOR was what i was thinking about getting.
