I am building a gaming computer for my roommate. I always come to this thread for the gosu advice.

He wants to play games such as Diablo III, Dota 2 , SC2, Mass Effect 3, Skyrim, and such on max settings. He doesn't seem interested in Crysis 2 which is a good thing. His budget is around $1000 and he needs an OS and display as well. This is what I had in mind for him:

i5-2400k @ $190
ASUS P8H67-M LX Micro ATX Motherboard @ $90
EVGA GeForce 560 1 GB @ $175
SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD103SJ 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s @ $60
Mushkin Enhanced Silverline 8GB @ $50
Antec EarthWatts Green EA-430D Green 430W @ $55
LIAN LI Lancool PC-K7B @ $70 (case)

Win 7 OS @ $100
ASUS VH226H Black 21.5" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor @$150

Is this a good build? Any big problems with it , thanks for awesome support!

The build is fine, but I'm assuming you mean an i5 2400 since you have an H67 board. Your prices aren't the greatest though. The GTX 560 and Radeon 6870 are pretty damn similar in performance and the 6870 is usually $20 or so cheaper, so unless you're NVIDIA biased I'd get the 6870. Usually a 1TB 7200 RPM drive is around $50 if you look around. You could find cheaper RAM for $40, which is the "standard" price. Don't get above 1333MHz RAM if you're on a H67 board. You have a good PSU but I feel it's a little pricey as well....

So I basically scrapped the build I had earlier and tried to come up with one myself, managed to keep it below $700 (minus monitor/keyboard/mouse)

+ Show Spoiler +
What is your budget?

Preferably less than or right at $700

What is your resolution?

Probably 1280x1024 but will want to go up to 1680x1050

What are you using it for?

Gaming and basic every day school stuff (Word, excel, etc)

What is your upgrade cycle?

I'd say probably 2 years

When do you plan on building it?

By mid-december

Do you plan on overclocking?

Most likely no, and if so not for a while

Do you need an Operating System?

I can get Windows 7 pretty cheap from my university

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

Most likely no

Where are you buying your parts from?

Online; I've been looking on tigerdirect and Newegg and frankly have found better deals on tigerdirect

Total cost: $690, $660 with rebates

I had a friend answer a few of the questions I had regarding some of the equipment but he didn't get a chance to look at everything once I had finished. After Skyr's recommendations I went with the H67 mobo and my friend really recommended the i5 2400 for gaming. My friend recommended hitachi for hard drives and cooler master for cases, and I went with the HAF 912 case because it had more fans/better airflow and was easier to access than the RC-310, although if you guys recommend I just go with the RC-310 that's fine.

Anyways like I said my friend didn't get to double check everything before he left so if you guys see any problems with this or have any suggestions for better/cheaper parts please let me know.

Yup, wow I'm still getting stupid blue screens... 3 in one day? x.x

All of them said System Service Exception...

I have no idea what's going on since I'm getting blue screens and crashes even after a reformat and reinstall... And I'm only listening to music when it crashes sometimes... Starcraft 2 still crashes to desktop a bunch, I'm not sure if it's related.

Since it's not sure you'll get any benefits from updating bios with the added risk of doing it it's usually not recommended to update it unless you have a specific problem. What benefits there can be is impossible to say since it depends on the specific boards. Read the release notes for the latest bios for your own board if your want to know more.

If you're rolling an mATX motherboard, Silverstone TJ-08E is pretty much the best choice: it cools well, its small, and its pretty cute. The worst problem is the hard drive mounting system but that's only a problem if you have more than one internal hard disk.

Neither Lian Li case can mount fill size tower coolers or will be quiet. The only good thing about them is that they're light.

What is your budget?

next week

Do you plan on overclocking?

Yes

Do you need an Operating System?

Still got one

Do you plan to add a second GPU for SLI or Crossfire?

Probably not. Just getting a new card in 3 ish years seems like a better option(Atleast my friend told me so).

Where are you buying your parts from?

Any online store in Holland.

http://nl.hardware.info
or
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/

On those sites you can compare prices.

A friend of mine allready put someting together for me only he doesn't play SC2, so he wasnt sure if I needed anything special.
anyway, here it is:
ASRock P67 Pro3 - 84 euro
Gelid Tranquillo Rev.2 - 26 euro
Intel Core i5 2500K - 181 euro
Lite-On iHAS124 - 15 euro
Mushkin Silverline 8GB DDR3-1333 CL9 kit - 38 euro
Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - 49 euro
XFX Radeon HD 6870 Dual Fan 1GB - 155 euro

Where are you buying from? If you're in the US/Canada, you should be able to save $15 on RAM and get a cheaper mobo too. Why are you paying $90 for an H67 board? You might be able to find a cheaper graphics card too, I think the 6870s have started to come down to the price you listed. The PSU might not be so hot, some of the cooler master PSUs are iffy, but Myrmidon would know better.

@HJG:

I'm not sure what Lepa (Enermax /. Ecomaster) uses for the low-end Lepa units like the W450. Lowest-end Enermax is some rebranded low-end terrible CWT stuff.

Out of power supplies with the same price, I'm not sure about many of the others, but I think the Chieftec A85 450W CTB-450S is better.
http://nl.hardware.info/productinfo/118818/chieftec-a85-450w

500W model review (and the whole series is Sirtec I think)
http://www.thelab.gr/power-supplies-reviews/chieftec-ctb-500s-i-genia-psus-twn-89986.html

Everything else looks good.

edit:
@kef:

All the lower-end Cooler Master power supplies range from bad to mediocre. Depending on where you're buying, there are probably cheaper or better options.

All cheap/low wattage lepa psu's n, w and b series are all cwt dsa II as far as I know.

Here reviews of the 500W version:

Oh yeah whoops. Thanks for the tip.

I didn't notice the W450-SA was 80 plus bronze. If it's 80 plus bronze or 80 plus it's probably CWT DSAII rather than PUF or one of the lowest-end stuff.

edit: so as a precaution, stay away from the Lepa N series if those correspond to Enermax NAXN / Tomahawk -AST.

In that case it's kind of a toss-up between the Chieftec and the Lepa then.

I like the extra pci-e connector on the lepa, so I'd go for that one.

Though now im confused about the w series. On the lepa site they say its 80+ and in reviews they say its 80+bronze

[edit]
Ok I get it now. On the lepa site they say its only 80+ cus the 600W version isn't bronze.

Is the i3-2100 strong enough to run SC2 at 1920x1080 (assuming all other components are adequate), or should I get an i5? Keep in mind I play a lot of team games, even 4v4s.

You're definitely going to want an i5 in that scenario. There are lots of options depending on your budget, with the main difference between the non-OC-able i5's being the frequency, which does make a difference in FPS (i5 2300, 2310, 2320, 2400, 2500). All of them will be fine.

If you want to play on really high settings in big team games a 2500k should be a consideration, assuming you have the budget for it as well as for a P67 (or Z68) board to OC and an aftermarket cooler.

Here's a benchmark (not sure what game settings they used) but either way, as you can see for the 2500k, the performance increase is fairly linear with increased frequency. This applies to the lower i5's since they're otherwise identical to the 2500k, except that their multiplier is locked from Overclocking.

Im not sure if you are 100% correct:
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i3-2120-2100_5.html#sect0
http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i5-2500-2400-2300_7.html#sect0

i3-2100 and i5-2400 both beat 2300 in sc2.

The way i thought it was: if you are not multitasking and are not about to pay enough money to overclock a 2500k, a 2100's fps/$ is pretty good.

edit: by multitasking i mean running other programs while playing sc2.
