He used several times too much paste, IIRC a single rice-grain sized amount or thin line is best.. but nowhere near that much

That was as much as I use to repaste a GPU.

That's ignoring the part where he tells you to spread it with something that could fuck up the processor or mobo. Even if you advocate manual spreading (which is only worth considering with the lower viscosity pastes that you REALLY don't want that much of), you don't do it with something that can damage components or scratch/dent the CPU IHS and fuck with your thermal conductivity even if it doesn't break shit.

That's one of the most bizarre ways to spread paste I've come across.

I would suppose this is why manufacturers will pre-apply the thermal paste so you don't' have to do it.

I'm wondering if this is a good computer build? I may want to just go with radeon 7850 HD 1 GB version because my budget is 600-700 WITH windows 7.. Do you guys see any problem with my build? Should i change my cpu to intel? What are your guys thoughts?

What are you using it for? A $60 pentium with a $60 motherboard will perform better or equal to the x4 for just about every game. An i3-3220 with a $60 mobo is pretty nice for multithreaded, and will demolish the x4 in single threaded, for a similar cost. A 7850 is a massive step above the 650, but again it depends on games as to how much of a benefit you'll get.

It's not bad if you're not playing gpu bottlenecked games -- the graphics card isn't great, but other than that it seems like a rig that I would recommend/build for someone with your preferences.

The question is really the cost -- this is a custom prebuilt, no? It's reasonably balanced as a system, but whether it's good value is another story.

im only going to try to use it for medium settings on it. the cost is around $1100 or so. i dont remember haha

Well, assuming it costs 1100, you can build it for a lot less, and make small upgrades that make a big difference (for example, they give you a locked 3570 and still use an aftermarket cooler; this is pretty pointless when the price difference between the locked and unlocked 3570 and 3570k is $15 right now in case you want/need to overclock (and overclocking makes a considerable difference when playing/streaming sc2). Or, you could just axe $45 off my build cost and go with the 3570 with the stock cooler and get the same performance as with the wasted money on an aftermarket. I'm going to just show you really average newegg prices (basically none of these components are great deals right now) compared to how much it would cost to buy it prebuilt.

HAF 912 -- $60
i5-3570k -- $230
Hyper 212 EVO -- $30 AR
Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H -- $125
Kingston HyperX 2x2GB -- $30 (It's shameful that they picked RAM rated at 1.65v for a CPU that recommends no higher than 1.5v, when other 2x2 kits cost like $3 more)
GTX 650 -- $100 AR
Corsair Builder CX500 -- $50 AR
Samsung 840 120GB -- $110
Some optical drive -- $15

Are you a student? If you are, you can probably get Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate for $20 through your school ($35 if you want a disc instead of just a download), as well as Microsoft Office. If you're not, then you're looking at

Windows 7 Home Premium -- $100
Microsoft Office Home and Student -- $120

Even taking max values for the software, total is about $950, and every one of the above ships for free whereas the PC probably won't. Additionally, if you have avenues to get the above software discounted, it saves you almost $200 -- so, you'd be paying $750 to build it yourself -- and building yourself is really easy (perhaps with the exception of installing the heatsink, which is pretty annoying). You also may already have licenses for the above. If you live near a Fry's or Micro Center, even better -- you save about $80 post-tax on CPU+mobo.

Also keep in mind that shopping around for some better deals could save you another $50-100, and/or score you better components for the same price. Newegg seems to have the Samsung SSD at $90 every other week now; you can probably find a similar quality mobo for around $100 in the next 2-3 weeks, the HAF 912 was $40 AR until yesterday, and you can almost certainly get a better power supply for $30-$40 AR with the frequency of sales there. Again, it's not awful, but the question is whether or not saving even $150 at the absolute most conservative estimate is worth 2.5 hours of your time doing a first-time build and learning a lot about your system. Better yet, you can put that $75 in savings toward a 7850 2GB or gtx 660, both of which are showing up in good deals for $175-195 AR and will still be capable cards 2-3 years from now, whereas I can't necessarily say the same about the 650.

I don't know much about this site's support; if it's comparable to, say, Dell, then maybe it's worth a little more than I'm giving it credit for. But, because I doubt they take much responsibility for ex-post customer service, it doesn't seem worth it to me.

what is your opinion on the mobo that i am thinking of in comparison to the msi or other brands?
where is a gtx 660 for $175-$195? that would be so good to have then :D
if i do do this, then its going to be my first time building one ^^ haha
yeah, i was only just looking at that site to see what i would like, not really going to buy it haha

1. The Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H is comparable to an Asus P8Z77-V LX, MSI G41-LGA, or an ASRock Pro4 in price and support. They're decent mobos, but lately the next step up, e.g. the Asus P8Z77-V LK or the ASRock Extreme4, have had solid sales and been about the same price after rebate (or occasionally a little lower). For overclocking, they're all solid mobos for the price -- I think you have to have a really good reason to spend more. If you're not going to overclock, just go for a B75 Mobo at the $75-$100 price point instead and save $25-50.

2. The GTX 660 (by some brand other than EVGA, which is still $199 but has a pretty loud blower fan) was just on sale for $199 after shipping somewhere -- my initial post meant to say $175-199; it was an error. The Gigabyte GTX 660 is still $209 AR on Newegg, which is fairly close.

3. Building your rig isn't that difficult. There are a few pitfalls along the way that are easily avoided. This video is pretty good, and the builder doesn't do anything that I would consider risky or shortcutting through the duration of the build; he does everything that you'd probably want to do with your computer. Aftermarket heatsink, SSD and HDD, discrete GPU, in an ATX mid tower case. Reasonable minds can differ on the way that he applies the thermal paste, but everything else is pretty standard. I didn't include part 1 because this forum can help pick parts, although feel free to watch part 3 if you want help installing Windows, going through UEFI BIOS, and other setup type stuff.

im sorry to constantly bombard you with questions and i appreciate your help
so thank you for it ^^
can you explain a little more in detail about the difference between the Kingston HyperX 2x2GB 1.5v, 1.65v, and the 1.7v?
obviously to some people, they would assume getting the 1.65 or the 1.7
and another thing, do the colors even matter? lol i assume their all the same thing but i noticed that the reds are cheaper than the blacks and blues O.o
and also, if the fan comes with a heatsink, do i have to get another heatsink? i would think not but asking wouldnt hurt haha

If you buy a heatsink+fan together, e.g. Hyper 212, Noctua D14, etc., then there's no need for anything else unless you want a second fan for the extra airflow. This isn't necessary unless you find that your temps are too hot at a reasonable overclock (and, in all likelihood, you probably won't run into these issues until the summer unless you put your tower next to a radiator or something), or you're trying to push the limits of your chip.

Hey guys - I'm looking for a laptop/ultrabook sometime in the next few months. This will be mostly for mobile coding/dev work (and sc2 streaming ofc). It doesn't need to do gaming (I have my desktop for that!) but dedicated graphics are preferable. I'll be doing some CUDA GPGPU programming for my MS thesis, and I'd rather not have to remote-desktop into my home machine to deal with that. (For compatibility/cost I've considered opencl with Intel's HD4000, but that's for a different thread.)

Budget in the ~1k range (+/- 200).
Lightweight is a big plus, prefer < 5lb.
Refurbished might be ok.
1920x1080 strongly preferred, but I'd consider a 1600x900.
Form factor: 13-15in
I already have access to Win 7/8. (Though afaik all laptops come with OS)
Battery life can be mediocre

Needs to ship/sell to USA

I've strongly considered the zenbook prime UX31a from acer (Note: no discrete GPU ...). The 32VD is a tad expensive unless I get it refurbished. Both are lightweight with nice keyboard, screen, and general build quality. I wondered if you guys knew of any deals/sites where they might be cheap. I'm also looking for laptop alternatives that people have enjoyed.

I also have never purchased a laptop before, so if I'm missing anything big, let me know.

Edit: Nothing urgent, I don't actually need this until summer. Should I wait for haswell ultrabooks?
Theory is when you know everything but nothing works. Practice is when everything works but no one knows why. In our lab, theory and practice are combined: nothing works and no one knows why.

If you can live with being an early adopter of a new brand, the Vizio Thin+Light CT15 is pretty loaded for its price, albeit only HD4000.

Hi guys. I'm looking for some advice on a good 600-650W PSU to buy this weekend. My old/current one is this. I've upgraded other components already since buying that 2-3 years ago and plan to upgrade again this summer so I want to make sure I've got a lot of extra power to work with. My limit is about $70. Also, I live in Canada, so ncix/canadacomputers is probably best. Thanks.

Posting from the new rig, fully stable. Feels good to have the upgrade done for myself instead of giving the goodness to other people. Obligatory post-build post:

Final Build
Intel i5-3570k w/ Hyper 212 EVO
Asus P8Z77-v LK
2x4 GB Corsair Vengeance
Samsung 840 250GB
MSI Twin Frozr III Radeon HD 7950 (w/ 7950 PCB)
Rosewill Capstone 450-M
Cooler Master HAF-912

Final cost after MIR, tax, (free) shipping was $824, which seemed pretty reasonable after a couple of clutch newegg promo codes late in the game.

Additional Cougar Vortex fans for top exhaust; front intake.

Internal pics:

Overclocked the CPU to 4.3ghz @1.235v, fully stable after a pair of 10 run IntelBurnTests @ Maximum and about 6 hours of Prime95. Not the greatest overclocker ever but not bad. I may mess around more with 4.4ghz to see if the chip dislikes odd multipliers, and LLC to see if I can get it more optimized while still stable. Temps under 10 Maximum IBT runs maxed out at 75C, temps after 6 hours of Prime95 maxed at 68C, so running reasonably cool, which is nice. Airflow in the case seems quite nice with the 2 extra fans. Windows 8 has also been a pleasurable experience so far.

Will be trying to get some benches streaming SC2/LoL and playing Crysis 3 beta later tonight.

Edit: doh, forgot to rotate images, lol. May fix later.

Weird image rotations threw me off a lot =P

Ivy runs hot, but if you are only reaching 75c/68c under such loads i wouldnt really hesitate to push for a few hundred mhz more. Even reaching something like 90c under worst case, because a gaming+streaming load wont be anywhere close

Its generally reccomended AFAIK (overclock.net asus board ivy bridge thread etc?) to use ultra high or high i think it was (75% or 50%) LLC setting, it might help you get better overclocking results.

The CPU ive been playing with recently does 4.4ghz on 1.13v 75% llc - 50 runs max RAM IBT, 24 hour prime95 blend (though i forgot to custom blend to use >90% RAM and didnt max priority it.. i hear you are supposed to do both for absolute stability testing) so its quite a bit better than what you posted, but i think its quite far above average, and if you are stuck with the vcore+frequency you wrote, then yours is maybe slightly below, but still decent-ish

In terms of streaming settings, encode-wise for a 3570k at ~4.3-4.5ghz you should be able to pull off about: 1920x1080@45fps@veryfast, 1600x900@60fps@veryfast, 1280x720@60fps@faster/fast but you might want to target a lower resolution and/or framerate if you dont have good upload speeds

Yeah I'll try to push the LLC a bit and then throttle back the voltage, and I know that you are right re: custom blend test; that's what I used here. I'm also gonna try 4.4@same settings and see if it's stable, because I've seen other Ivies' voltage charts that hiccup at either 4.3 or 4.5 and then flatten considerably, so it's possible that's happening here. I'm hesitant to push it too much further because I keep my apartment pretty cool in the winter months, and I think ambient temperatures could make quite a bit of difference (although likely not 15c).

I have 3.84Mb/s up average on 3 speedtest runs so I don't think I'll be capped by my connection; I doubt I'll stream at 1080 but will be quite pleased with 720p@60@faster with high stability.

EDIT: I pushed the LLC up to Ultra High from High and tested 4.4ghz. Stabilized at 1.265v with IBT/Prime95 temps of 82/76, respectively. 4.5ghz stabilized at 1.295v with temps of 88/83. I think I'm going to hang around at 4.4ghz for now and then downclock to my 4.3 settings in the summer.

You might get more hits if you make your own thread for this question, but if you do I'd suggest adding a little more information, like what you'll use it for (if you print pictures, that's a much different ballgame than printing high volume of documents), your budget, whether you need/care about print speed, etc.

Ok - Thanks.

- Wireless

- Laser
- Color
- Speed is important
- Not for printing pictures. Only for school work. Budget is not a big problem as long it isn't anything designy in it.
