The 14th iteration of the TLnet Map Contest finished a little less than 2 weeks ago and Alexander “Insidious” Hallmann managed to win the contest. His map, Blackburn, didn't just win the public vote, it was also the highest-scoring map when the pro judges had their say.
Blizzard sat down with Insidious to pick his brain a little bit and he was happy to share his thoughts on mapmaking. He touches on everything from conceptualizing the map to adding visuals and how feedback from TLMC 12 helped him turn the map into a TLMC winner.
One question that kept on coming up during the casting of this map was if the mapmaker himself had a lot of traumatic experiences playing against Zerg but, surprisingly, that's not why the tortured Ultralisks were added:
What’s your favorite part of the final version?
I'm probably most proud of adding those tortured Ultralisks [to the map’s scenery]. I'm a zerg player myself, but they fit the map so well, I think.
