Many companies record real music for their games, at great expense mind you (especially if they use the Los Angeles or London orchestras) but Blizzard is not one of them. If you're can't hear the difference, you're not really qualified to comment on this. Samples being played back at different keys? Haha: [ you are a moron.. and I happen to write a bit of orchestral mockups in my spare time and am a huge fan of film score and game music. SC1 has a very cheap keyboardy(I mean the Terran theme has a very prominent DX7-sounding patch for gods sake) aesthetic. But it was also made in probably 1997 when composers had access to very few PC based tools, let alone the massive, complex and extremely versatile libraries they have now(Like Vienna, East West Symphony Orchestra, etc). So the only option was to do things with cheap gear and get an unconventional sound or go all out and hire an orchestra and get a composer who has experience writing for it, which would be hard in the game music world... If you dont know, many feature films these days use mockups as their score that goes to the print of the film as orchestras are very costly, but so long as the composer used the library to his advantage there is just no way for an average person to tell unless they know something about it. The guy who did the latest wow music and maybe the old stuff too happens to be a HUGE name in ambient music(particularly in comissioned installations) and his shit is CRAZY good and head of the class as far as music production in games go. Sure its not recorded by a real orchestra in most cases but i dont think anyone really gives a shit except snobby dykes like you who drum up ideas in their head without the experience to really back that shit up. The main point of my original post though was that none of the real orchestral shit even matters because SC1 had a fantastically fun score, everyone recognizes it and I would just like to see them do something more in that vein instead of getting a big film sound(The cinematic trailer for instance reminds me very much of David Julyans work in the Prestige and although I love that shit, i dont really want it in my Starcraft). In short, eat a dick yo.

I agree that Starcraft is better off with the music it has than a live orchestra, as the music is more electronic than orchestral. Warcraft's music, and some of Diablo's, is much more suited for orchestra, but Blizzard chooses not to record with a real orchestra because most people can't tell the difference, even though plenty of game titles out there use full orchestra for their music. Here's an interview with Jason Hayes, who scored WoW: Link to the interview The majority of the game [audio] is done via electronics, and there are certain things that just don't sound very good emulating an orchestra with electronics. I've always had a real struggle with brass, especially trumpets. Making them sound as wonderful and strident as live players has always been difficult--it never quite comes across. But when you're in a setting with a live orchestra, you get these wonderful trumpets that bring passages to life that I just can't do very easily when emulating an orchestra. When I go to any of these shows there's always a bit of a surprise factor as to how this performance is going to sound.

But I liked all of sc1's music for the most part... using 3 different composers for each individual race gave them all a unique feel. anyway please god dont let them do some total fluff orchestral/ambient 200X hollywood movie score horseshit... I have a feeling I will be listening to transformer movie soundtrack while I play SC2 : / (*except the OP, how the hell do you not like glenn stafford? the man wrote the warcraft 2 soundtrack and terran music. then again didnt he do WC3? I remember nothing from that soundtrack, so maybe you are right, but I like to think that is blizzards fault.)
