I love watching competitve SC2, I don't think I can ever let that go. Simply because of the strategic depth and cool stuff you see if you are good enough to realise the mindgames and subtle things that players do to edge ahead.

Because I love watching I often get an itch to play after watching, so I also get periods of intense gaming and then periods of only watching.

The game is fun as hell to win... but it can be incredibly frustrating to lose... especially during loss streaks. Which is what my ladder experience is generally like. Win streaks and loss streaks.

Let's be fair, as much as I loved HotS, it was an extremely stale game at times, especially if you played P. PvT and PvP were extremely boring if you liked variety, you were pretty much forced to play some blink into colossi style in PvT and past the coinflippy early game, PvP was atrocious (though I had a lot of fun with Classic's style, incorporating a void ray squad to my colossi army). PvZ was a blast to play though (not much to watch once blink sentry styles got prevalent sadly).

LotV has a lot of potential if you ask me, probably more than HotS due to the mineral change which I think will turn out to be a good move. The tweaks that need to be done are rather obvious (good maps, nerfing some units), and even in the current state I'm having a lot of fun. It's a very taxing game, and a bit of a blank page timings / bo wise, which I like.

Because I really like RTS games and there aren't any others to replace Starcraft with.

1. 1x1 is more rewarding then team-play games.
2. No stupid teammates, ability to participate in tournaments without having a team.
3. Highest skill cap.
4. Definitely the best game to watch!
5. I grew up with SC:BW and WC3.
6. Very fast games compared to all other competitive scenes.
7. Training for WC4!

I still play for a lot of reasons, but mainly because I enjoy the RTS genre the most. I love replaying campaign missions and getting creative with the abilities/units and beating missions several times over. The co-op has that same creative element, and it's been fun to play with friends.

1v1 and team games are an added bonus sprinkled in between, there aren't any other games that keep me coming back quite like SC2.

I find great enjoyment in the 1v1 aspect of it all. You simply have no excuses when things go wrong—it's all you. The mechanical skill required to execute things ingame makes it a learning game, one that gives off the feeling that you are doing more than merely playing a game.

As much as I dislike the direction they went with void, I'll still be playing and watching for as long as I can.

I did not play ranked games since the brood lord infestor era. I was not really high level(started in silver, reached high diamond) but i did not have fun while playing the game. Seriously, i chose doing every single chore or homework before starting my ladder games. Since i was not planning to go pro, playing sc2 felt like a waste of time. I played tons of single player games and lot of league of legends but i did not stop following the sc2 scene since then.

I started playing again with Lotv. I still don't have a lot of fun but executing a plan perfectly gives a sense of success(a build order, reaper harass, marine drop etc) It feels like i am playing starbow or something though, every build is different from what i remember. I have severe ladder anxiety but my current goal is playing 4 games every single day. Even if i lose every single one of them i learn a lot.

And to stay on topic, my reasons are:
1-) The sense of success by executing a plan perfectly/as well as possible
2-) The feeling of progression over a long time

Only started playing with LotV...so not bored yet. I only came over 'cause I can't deal with the whiny kids in Dota and CS despite both being great competitive games.

Basically this. There's something truly sick about the ladder of SC2, which is why it can never be a casual game.

Seriously, though, I would play team games like Heroes of the Storm, but I hate team format. There's nothing that frustrates me more in competition than watching my team lose due to some jackass that can't work with a team/doesn't know the game. SC doesn't have that problem, although it can be more personally frustrating, because when you lose, it's all on you.

Only reason I play this game is that this is only 1v1 game with actual esport and if you are good enough, you can earn good money playing it, and my goal is to become pro sc2 player. But I really hate the game.

Its a strange question "why do you keep playing" because there is no reason "why" someone keeps playing because those reasons are always arbitrary. A better question would really be--looking back at how much time you've spent on SC2, are you proud of the time you've put into this game or are you shocked by the number?

Do you hate the game when you're winning?

Yes, the game is way too stressfull and knowing that I only won because opponent was really bad.

I really don't understand people playing a game they don't like. That's a waste of time. For real.

For me the game makes me use my brain in a way I don't normally use it in in everyday life (work, family, etc.) and I love that! Brain exercise in a unique and extremely challenging way. Pure fun. Even if I lose.
