"Starcraft 2 gamers around the world gather in Seoul"
Taken from this article, the KeSPA chairman has announced that there are plans for an international SC2 tournament in Seoul, which will be a part of the WCS tier system (it will award WCS points).
Details are very vague right now regarding the date or scale of the tournament. The only sure thing is that KeSPA wants it to be in Seoul.
He said he wants to start a new tournament that will be held in Seoul, and his team is working hard on coming up with ideas about how this can be done. It states that this won't be the world championship, but rather a tournament that can give points toward to WCS where foreign players can participate over 3-4 day period.
I get the feeling that he wants more opportunities for KR players who doesn't participate in foreign tourneys regularly. Not sure how many foreigners are willing to participate though..

Depends on the conditions. If they offer the same conditions GOM offered in their world championship, I imagine it to be hard to decline for any player who is curious about Korea.
A big international tournament in Seoul sure would be nice. Unlike the usual where the korean are seen as the conqueror it would be the foreigners ahah.
It's not gonna be an OSL. It's a 3-4 day tournament (foreigner style). It would be OSL in name only. Also, how could you want what was the greatest tournament to become just another WCS feeder?

I'd rather have OSL than no OSL, and it would be much less of a "feeder" now than it was last year.

Well Acer is probably better than MVP and Prime, if Axiom-Acer you have a playoff contender.

No more EG-Liquid plz, I am more then fine with korean only teams.

Maybe the aim is to get all Koreans form AM and EU to fight vs Koreans from Korean region. If it is the aim I like it but without preparation the results will be 75% random like in any foreign event.

GSL is not Korean-only (that no non-Korean feels it's worth it to go over there and qualify is a separate matter entirely), and the Korean scene would benefit from literally any extra tournament they can get.

Wait, North America can have region locked tournaments. Why not Korea? Gotta help that scene too...
They have, ever heard of the GSL or Proleague? :D
GSL is not region locked per se, it's just that the structure of the tournament severly hampers foreign participation + most of them would be eaten alive in Code A.
I am sure that this is not gonna be an OSL. He announced that on spotv with the spotv caster. It's definately going to be a new spotv tournament. I really doubt that ogn will hold a sc2 event this year either. ( they have none of shows regarding starcraft, and the casters are moved on for other games, such as LOL or Hearthstone.)

Meh, there will always be a new and greater tournament.
It's pretty clear Ongamenet is dedicated to League of Legends. Maybe they'll run a BW or SC2 tournament every once in a long while, but League is far more important to them.
I'm sure what could make it better is to make it like a week long and the tournament would be every other day so people can relax and/or practice for their opponents so it'd be better games. After all, I would be surprised if the foreigners didn't take the chance to ladder in Korea and get placed in plat.
All joking aside, 128 players and BO5s would be awesome. It'd be an awesome experience for any pro gamer
I hope some foreigners attend to this event, not only the AM/EU koreans. NaNiwa, Scarlett, VortiX, TLO, Snute, elfi, Grubby, Nerchio, Welmu, Happy. And of course, Sen, Jim, MacSed...

For all the fear of Kespa pre-transition to SC2 they've by and large only done good for the scene and produce great content across LoL and SC2.
That's never been a problem. They've always produced good content, derp.

Why would they need a region lock?? I don't think they are afraid of any NA players winning money over the Koreans (= But would be cool to see few NA players check this tourney out.

But to be fair, I doubt that even Korean would feel it worth it in my opinion, if roles were reversed. I mean you need to fly there just to try to qualify for Code A, then stay for an extended period of time to try qualify for Code S and even if you manage to do that via winning ro24, you will hardly get half of your costs back. And then you have to dip into your own funds again to come back next season to compete in Code S.
Anyways, I'm eager to see what it will be. I would've preferred a non-live event that goes a bit longer than a short week long event, we already see that enough in the various IEMs and DHs.
Well it would be nice to see a "Super Tournament" again where you have all of the best players in one big tournament. Ever since the Koreans scattered around the regions for WCS, we haven't had the chance to see something of that magnitude.

Which is exactly why the Korean scene needs more tournaments.

We may see that enough in Western tournaments, but most Koreans certainly don't. In fact, all of their tournaments right now are fairly long-spanning. ;p
But again, anything more than what is happening would be a good thing.

I too would love a Super Tournament on steroids, all open of course. At least the finals should be Bo7 though. ^^
If it were over 3-4 days, could you allow for Best of 5s for most of the series or only Best of 3s? Just a question, as I have no idea. If it could be single elimination but without a single Best of 1, that would be ideal (and fantastic)!
The thing is, will it be a series of tournament or just another one-off. Judging by the supposed length (3, 4 days weekend tourney), Im afraid it might be the latter
just make it the 2014 Kespa Super Tournament. 128 entries seeded by WCS points and invites to all notable pros and maybe a qualifier for some of the last spots if needed.

Well last Assembly involved 6 to 8 Bo5 and one Bo7 series over the course of only 2 days. san for instance, our winner, had to go through 8 Bo5 series (as he lost 2 in the group stages) and reached the finals, so he played a lot, suffice it to say.
An 128 man single-elimination tournament would mean 7 rounds total, so it should be feasible, especially over a couple more days. I don't know how easy it would be for the viewers and production though, it would certainly involve a lot of community casters too, as there would be tons of great match-ups at any time for the first 3 rounds regardless of how brackets look.
Still, I'd love it.

While I understand and agree with your concern, having a one-off tournament is still better than not having it at all in the first place; moreover, having a successful tournament may potentially pave the path for more to come, whether from the same organization or another, whether in the same format or another. So basically this is a good thing for players and viewers no matter how you look at it, and if it ends up being a good thing for the organizers as well, who's to say they'll not do something else in the future?

Its called wcg korea. Except its bo3
Except WCG is dead. And the Korean tournament was only a qualifier, with no prize pool of its own, and which few people cared to watch. Now this, this has the potential to be the exact opposite in terms of hype and interest.
A nice 128 super tournament with the best in the world all playing sounds like a lot of fun especially if they set it up around June or July so its right at midpoint of the season so it would give us 2 major tournaments each year (the year long WCS and the weekend long super event whatever they wind up naming it). Maybe in the offseason they could set up a show match Bo7 between the winners of each event.
Why do you guys assume it's gonna be a weekend tournament? Isn't it much more likely, that SPOTV wants to create their own league - a counterpart to GSL, just like MSL was counterpart to OSL?

While that would be great, it's hard to see it as that great a business decision, considering Gom's brand of SC2 tournaments has remained top dog in SC2 in terms of viewership and interest.
We will see, if Kespa finds sponsors that are interested in paying for all they should run it. But running something for the sake of running it is terrible. If they can guarantee WCS points it will find its players. But they have to take care about their time settings. And please other casters. Cant stand this english ProLeague casters that are just "translating" what the hell they want and not actually translating what the players said. I know its hard to do Korean-English but they failed English-English too.
If they can get tastosis this will be a good show.
This should be a weekend tournament like IEM and Dreamhack . If it can be sustained once a month or every 2 months with online qualifiers it would be awesome .
