Sure, WCG was never an illustrious SC2 event, and was always overshadowed by other tournaments worldwide. . . but it did offer a unique chance for players of every country to compete, kind of like the olympics of SC2. It was really the only tournament you had a chance no-namers representing their country passionately on the big stage. Every other global tournament has been usurped by Korean dominance, for better or worse. Anyway, it's always sad to hear these things.

I had the opportunity to spent 9 days in China with the Crossfire team from Canada. They were competitors too, but they didn't stream because their scene was smaller, they didn't travel all the time because their scene didn't have many tournaments. Crossfire is one of the biggest game in Asia. It's free to play and gerenated more revenue in 2013 than League of Legends. They're about to go to china again for another tournament but with WCG gone, they'll only have 1 international tournament or less and representing Canada won't even be something they'll be able to put on their resume. As for me, it was a 9 year long dream since Warcraft 3 to one day represent Canada at a WCG. It sounds cliché but I broke down after qualifying for China last September. There's something powerful about trying to make your country proud. Competing for your country against the world was and is an appealing concept to me. I can't help but think, what if Riot would have let their LCS players play in it? Would it have been a deal breaker? Would they still be alive if they took better care of their online production? Going to their last event in Kunshan, China was really awesome and you could clearly see that WCG knew what they are doing with 3 stages Good night sweet prince, RIP WCG 2000-2014

There have been some epic matches and content for many different games and their subsequent genres that have gone on throughout the years; not to mention all the region-specific content and matches.

As an Irishman as well, something like WCG would have been one of our rare opportunities to get to mix it with the big boys, it mightn't be as big a deal for the established E-sports nations, but WCG was something to work towards way back in the day I guess.

I think he was just trying to illustrate that stuff did happen before SC2 came out, even if the poster did it in a kind of condescending way. As a very passionate fan of both Unreal Tournament and Brood War, WCG used to be the shit yo. I don't take kindly to people who just discovered competitive gaming in the last year or so taking shots at something they were never around to experience and can't even begin to understand. Really MoP ? Can't you stop behind an elitist. You don't even know if the guy is just joking or not... I joined TL something like 2years ago and i lurk TL waaaaayyy before SC2 was even announced. So joined date is nothing indicative.

Wcg was the premiere tournament for virtually every game from 2001-2008. Anyone then would surely know it. No tournament can even come close in prestige. National wcgs also held dota tournaments way before any other organisers did. It was the days when game developers lobbied hard to be included in WCG finals. It was that prestigious. Even koreans consider a wcg on par with msl/osl. Furthermore many non mainstream games found wcg to be the premiere tournament. Many of the smaller regions too celebrate their national wcg as the culmination of esports in their respective country. It was something very special and seeing progamers from around the world gather for many different games was a sight to behold.

We can still have some. Been a while i watched one.

following wcg since 2001 when we participated on our national bw and cs category and followed it ever since... people who said nasty things about wcg were obviously SC2 elitists "care-for-sc2 only as the only esports"... and those who weren't part/following since the infant stages of esports...
