The first day of ASUS ROG Winter 2014 was full of unexpected upsets in individual matches, but ended up with the all too predictable outcome of eight Korean pros heading to the quarter-finals.
Right off the bat, the upsets started coming in one after the other. Fnatic.Zanster defeated Liquid`HerO 3-1, NrSWelmu took out ST_Life 3-1, and [A]SortOf defeated Liquid`TaeJa 3-1. While these results gave international fans hope that things might be turning around after an embarassing 2013 where non-Korean players failed to win a single major tournament, things returned to the status quo by the time the tournament reached the quarterfinals. HerO won his rematch against Zanster, Welmu went out in the Ro16 to Apocalypse and Patience, and SortOf was eliminated by fellow Nordic player Snute.
Soon enough, the story was more about seeing which Koreans had declined over the short winter break, and which ones had come back with a vengeance. TaeJa was the most notable player to falter at ASUS ROG, doling out some surprisingly fast GG's as he was eliminated in the Ro16. On the other hand, the Europe based Mill.ForGG and mYi.StarDust showed exceptionally good games, each going 12-2 in maps as they moved on to the quarterfinals.
ASUS ROG Winter resumes on Saturday, Feb 01 12:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00), when the remainder of the tournament will be played out in its entirety.

Grats to the foreigner upsets Even if they didn't make the Ro8, some big scalps were claimed this day.
Poor Taeja's ELO is going to plummet...

Not surprising considering that every time I tune into Taeja's stream, he's running replays or playing 4v4s. I know that's a pretty small sample to draw the assumption that he's not taking the game seriously, but perhaps it does reflect his overall attitude towards the game.
Nice to see the foreigner's kick off the 2014 with some fresh scalps, but it kills me to see HerO lose! Hopefully HerO doesn't slump in 2014... He's already in one...

Life has an easy bracket, I think he should have no problems getting to the finals.
On the other side, it should either be Dear or JD. I hope for a JD vs Life rematch!
|
Tough day for Liquid, none of their players made it from the groups. If only TLO were here, he'd make the Ro8 (he managed fine in Sao Paulo)

Asus Rog will become a Jaedong winning tradition .

That upper bracket is a blood bath! Edit: Go Jaedong!! I hope to see another epic clash of JD vs Dear.

Ok let's say, this year Jaedong winning will become a traditon.

Welmu has a habit of showing up big time against big time opponents. After watching him play in the first round I thought we'd see him in the quarterfinals. He still played it close even though he got knocked out. The other upsets were kind of a jolt though

I predict a ZvZ finals....and it shall be glorious

I believe this is a remnant of Coach Park's influence on the team, Taeja almost always plays off-race or team games on stream.

I'm actually interested to see what becomes of Patience. Was Dreamhack a fluke or do we have a serious championship contender on our hands?

What did Taeja do exactly?
|
A sad day for Liquid. Hero was really off and his play didn't look anything like how he would play in Proleague. I only caught 1 of Taeja's games, but everything seemed slower than his opponent. Only going to look at the liquipedia stats now that my favorite 2 are out
|
Damn, Dear is still a badass. too bad he wasn't shown on stream from what I could see.
|
hell ya dear is still badass. wasnt playing at his top but still some of the top pvt and pvz in the world if not the best. should take his side of the bracket and if its not a toss from the other side will take the tourny
|
If Jaedong beats Dear again, I feel he got this tournament in the bag.
Hopefully he doesn't lose straight away against ForGG.

JD vs Stardust in da finals!
|
people can say that foreigners got some scalps all they want^^ the fact still reminds that the top 8 is all korean <3 so the scalps doesn't really count :D
|
ah ForGG vs JD again heheh
|
Normally I would be glad Life got 2 ZvP's in a row but seeing as he lost against against Welmu, not so happy now. Hopefully he wins the whole thing though.

Well, it is true that the remaining 8 are Koreans and that isn't too marvelous imo, since there is no real excitement left in this tournament. Welmu was close but I think he ran out of steam in the end. A local hero in the ro8 would have made a world of difference, but with so many Korean invitees it wasn't to be this time.

Whenever I dont want Taeja to win he wins and whenever I support him at a tounament he fails. Strange

Serral almost won TaeJa. If he would not have took that last bad fight TaeJa would have dropped already in ro32

Yeah, in the middle of series agaisnt Apoc he started to make bad decisions and reaction time increaced. In PvP series again Patience he must have been sleeping already.
After he dropped out he tweeted that he was so tired and you saw that.

(Z)[A]SortOf defeated (T)Liquid`TaeJa 3-1. The fuck is this shit? That shouldn't happen, like, ever :D

good that the koreans fought their way back. come on koreans, be koreans :D

sad for MorroW but still good to see so many awesome players beat it out today! ASUS ROG is really a sweet tournament!

You must be new to the scene. No respected Korean streams their strats. They will play a off race or joke around in order to advertise their sponsors, while not showing their real strats/race to any competitors that will watch the stream for information. It's commons sense among Koreans. Which is why you never see many of them stream in the first place.

You writers really need to get over that crap. you honestly expect them to win major tournaments (even that's not well defined) in this day and age then I'd say your crazy.

It really surprises me everytime I am happy when europeans win vs koreans. Such level of bias
