Detailed results and standings on Liquipedia

The first day of ASUS ROG Winter 2014 was full of unexpected upsets in individual matches, but ended up with the all too predictable outcome of eight Korean pros heading to the quarter-finals.

Right off the bat, the upsets started coming in one after the other. (Z)Fnatic.Zanster defeated (P)Liquid`HerO 3-1, (P)NrSWelmu took out (Z)ST_Life 3-1, and (Z)[A]SortOf defeated (T)Liquid`TaeJa 3-1. While these results gave international fans hope that things might be turning around after an embarassing 2013 where non-Korean players failed to win a single major tournament, things returned to the status quo by the time the tournament reached the quarterfinals. HerO won his rematch against Zanster, Welmu went out in the Ro16 to Apocalypse and Patience, and SortOf was eliminated by fellow Nordic player Snute.

Soon enough, the story was more about seeing which Koreans had declined over the short winter break, and which ones had come back with a vengeance. TaeJa was the most notable player to falter at ASUS ROG, doling out some surprisingly fast GG's as he was eliminated in the Ro16. On the other hand, the Europe based (T)Mill.ForGG and (P)mYi.StarDust showed exceptionally good games, each going 12-2 in maps as they moved on to the quarterfinals.

ASUS ROG Winter resumes on Saturday, Feb 01 12:00pm GMT (GMT+00:00), when the remainder of the tournament will be played out in its entirety.

Grats to the foreigner upsets Even if they didn't make the Ro8, some big scalps were claimed this day.

Poor Taeja's ELO is going to plummet...

Not surprising considering that every time I tune into Taeja's stream, he's running replays or playing 4v4s. I know that's a pretty small sample to draw the assumption that he's not taking the game seriously, but perhaps it does reflect his overall attitude towards the game.

Nice to see the foreigner's kick off the 2014 with some fresh scalps, but it kills me to see HerO lose! Hopefully HerO doesn't slump in 2014... He's already in one...

Life has an easy bracket, I think he should have no problems getting to the finals.

On the other side, it should either be Dear or JD. I hope for a JD vs Life rematch!
I root for CJ because their fb posts are hilarious

Tough day for Liquid, none of their players made it from the groups. If only TLO were here, he'd make the Ro8 (he managed fine in Sao Paulo)

Asus Rog will become a Jaedong winning tradition .
Maru and Serral are probably top 5.

Welmu has a habit of showing up big time against big time opponents. After watching him play in the first round I thought we'd see him in the quarterfinals. He still played it close even though he got knocked out. The other upsets were kind of a jolt though

I believe this is a remnant of Coach Park's influence on the team, Taeja almost always plays off-race or team games on stream.

You think Coach Park influenced his players to not take the game seriously?
