The first day of HomeStory Cup VIII saw the first four round-of-32 groups play out, and to little surprise, elite Korean players MC, jjakji, TaeJa, and HerO took the four top spots. However, it was no walk in the park for the Koreans, with foreigner pros proving their mettle and putting up quite a fight. Even as the championship quartet made it through to the Ro16, the less accomplished Zenio was eliminated in the Ro32, losing games to jjakji and then MaNa.
With the Koreans taking the #1 spots in their groups, it was left to the foreigners to fight for the second place spots. In a minor upset, the young German Terran HeRoMaRinE took the second place spot in group A, edging out established veterans TLO and DIMAGA. Meanwhile in Group B, Socke showed he was still alive and well after spending some time outside of the spotlight, defeating MaNa twice to take the second place spot. The Canadian Scarlett defeated NightEnD twice to advance out of Group C, while TitaN won a close three-way melee between him, Kas, and TarGa to continue on to the Ro16.

Also, happy birthday to White-Ra!
HomeStory Cup resumes on Friday with the remaining Ro32 groups.

Well no surprise here. Still waiting if Stephano can make it to 2nd in his group or if we see the results of not playing for 3 months...

The only group I got wrong was group B because I thought Mana was going to get out, but I guess Socke has pretty good PvP so I'm not too surprised to see him get through.
|
I don't think there were any upsets for day 1. TLO might be an upset, but that's probably it.
|
Nice play by socke and Heromarine! I'm looking forward to Groupe French tomorrow though
|
This is absolutely shocking and unprecedented news.
Happy birthday White-Ra!

i really love the balance between foreigner and korean in this tournament. it seems so right to me, a bit like WCS EU
|
I suspect a Protoss will win this tournament. HerO, Stardust and MC are pretty legit. Taeja and Hyun are on their level, but I think the rest of the players aren't quite there.
|
Taeja clap...Nice first day of HSC. Looking forward to Group H and Group F (Stephano and Huk).
Happy birthday White-Ra!

I agree. Hopefully, HerO has a more focused mindset for Day 2. I heard he didn't really take his Targa series too seriously or something.

wow, zenio is the only korean who didn't make it. sad
|
An easy title for a protoss here to take. Heromarine looked really good which is always nice
|
Watch, 0 of the European Terrans make it out of their group...
It's up to Jjakji and Taeja.

Is there anyone else Excited for Stephano's cameback?

As always, I'm cheering for Hero and Taeja, but Hyun is my pick for a Zerg winner... maybe Leenock.
And yeah, since I was in class, I didn't catch all of the games, but I watched a few on my phone. Taeja and Hero both kind of rolled through their opponents and you could tell HerO wasn't super serious in game 2 against Targa.

I gave Hero a lot of crap in the LR thread for his games against targa. I only do it because he's my favorite player and I care for him. So, if I came out a little bit too critical, I am sorry. Go Hero!
|
alot of the top foreigners aren't there. feels like they invited alot of casters and friends to party for the weekend.
|
HeroMarine really impressed today. I thought his mechanics was one of the best foreign Terrans. He maybe surpassed DeMuslim already, almost getting to fringe of Korean Terran. Give this guy bit more time and support and he may become the top foreigner in 6 months.

Unfortunately I only caught Group A, glad Scarlett and jjakji advance.. hopefully I can watch all matches tomorrow, they look stacked!
That audio for the happy birthday video is intense.. haha.

Wow! Dimaga vs MC was soo bad game, if Dimaga practicing more he can kill such gamers as MC.

Hero and Taeja fighting! If only Zenio made it through too it would have been 100% Korean dominance. I think tomorrow will have similar results too

Really? Scarlett, Happy, Nerchio, Kas, Mana, Huk, Snute (invited, choose to stay in Korea), Naniwa (declined)... they even dusted off Stephano. I can't think of any other foreigners better than this group.

Does anyone ever expect Koreans to not take first place spots in tourneys they don't even prepare for?

Yeah, I agree, the line up is pretty stronk! I think it is a bit weird though to have 3 qualified players and 29 invited...

The atmosphere of hsc is the best. Thats why players love it so much. They drink, they gamble and party like a rock star. So even Stephano came. They should post some pics from nightclub action. Imagine taeja dancing. Yeah

Yes, agreed in general, guess I´d add Lucifron and Vortix, even though admittedly the Lucifron tournament breakthrough has never happened (at this stage, I´m not even adding the "yet":-( ) , but Vortix looked strong WCS Season3!

Gonna have to root against protoss the whole day 2 now, or we'll have to slog through a quagmire of PvP on day 3.

Endless PvPs in the final rounds has been a Homestorycup staple since HSC II & III. While it has become more zerg focused in the later editions thanks to late WoL balance, I'm glad protoss domination is back in full force :D

Sick post dude. Heromarine does look korean with his long hair. Feels weird to say this but I don't see Stephano beating ToD and I think he'll be eliminated but maybe he has practiced more than peolpe assume (as usual).

Koreans good at SC2? WOW - thank god someone finally figured that out ;D
Tbh., the only games of a Korean that I was able to catch was the MaNa vs Zenio series, poor Zenio, he somehow messed that up quite alot

I agree, Lucifron and Vortix are very strong. I'd argue the only foreigners that have been clearly a level above them this year are Naniwa and Scarlett. Possibly Stephano (he was a top foreigner before he retired this year). Everyone else is arguable, and in my horribly biased opinion, they're better than most (maybe even all) other foreigners.
Btw, Lucifron's Season 1 WCS was a breakthrough I'd say. It's just we expect even more from him!
On the topic of other strong foreigners that aren't invited, maybe Dimaga, Jim and Macsed should be mentioned? Possibly Moonglade?

DID YOU SEE THAT TAEJA CLAP
|
The abstract group "Koreans" didn't roll; MC, Jjakji, Hero and Taeja did. If Hwangsin, Cella, Phoenix and TailS had played instead, the results may have been different. I'm so sick of how korean players are reduced to their nationality, it's disrespectful to those players who work really hard and whose efforts pay off, as well as unfair to their fellow koreans who do not perform as well...

No its not.
"Korean" is a brand in SC2, aside from the nationality. Its works for the Koreans very well in terms of respect and foreign-team-money. There are a few disadvantages, right, but they have to face it.
OTHERWISE it would be unfair.

I never said there weren't marketing possibilities in the brand "korean"; I said it's unfair to use the word as synonymous with "good player". Some Koreans reap the short-term benefits of being branded as better than any player of any other nationality, but in the long-term I really think it's killing e-sports. It's why these discussions of region locking occur in the first place; "Koreans" aren't individuals, but rather a horde of furiously clicking clones, with prowess in Sc2 ingrained in their dna. Allow Koreans to be people instead, because a bad korean player is not any less korean, and an excellent foreign player is not any less excellent.

That's very true! I could not have said it better. The only legit reason to bunch people up in e-sport is skill or performance. So instead of saying "koreans roll over HSC" maybe something like "Favorites roll over HSC" or even "Skill domination in HSC". But I guess it's less catchy... Still, like you said I believe this habit is going to hurt e-sports in the end.

Hey guys. I'm not familiar with the scene. So from liquipedia, I noted that HSC is bashed in TaKe's studio apartment in Germany. Considering that there are so many players of various nationalities, how were the travels like? Did TaKe sponsor the trip for the Koreans etc? Or are the players travelling on their own expense (or rather their sponsors), similar to what they will do with any other competition, in hope of winning the tournament money?

Hey, just saw your post. You're right that I forgot Happy, though he hasn't really had significantly better results than Lucifron in WCS. It's essentially a toss-up (50 more points for Happy). And Lucifron did ever so slightly better in non-WCS (250 points over Happy). So yeah, by results, no significant difference.
