just curious, how many people play LOL (rough estimate) and how many dota 2?

I have been playing dota 2 (never played dota), maybe I'll give lol a shot.

absolutely this. people in this thread are disgusting. the moment something bad happens, starting back in the beginning of the beta, people switch into apocalypse mode and start tearing down the game they're supposed to be fans of. for shame.

I agree, its almost like they want to the game to fail. The worst part was some of the whiners coming over to watch TI3 and doing their crying in the LR threads, claimng they didn't like teams and line ups they knew nothing about. Claim styles were boring and Valve should remove heroes that they think are boring. Hating on casters. Thankfully, the Dota 2 section of TL just told them to STFU and GTFO.

Some man just want to watch the world burn.

When crowd doesn't like something they express their feelings, thats how world works. You really think that people are complaining to kill the game?

they complain at such lengths and with such ferocity that it's actively harmful, and I'd be willing to bet that many of them are aware of it, but still do it anyway for the reasons listed above

Wanting the game to be better is harmful? How exactly?

I believe ignorant people are doing more harm, people acted as if everything was fine and blizzard gave us broodlord/infestor for a whole year. If not community's outrage we'd still be playing with warhounds and helbats.

I agree critism and feedback is 100% necessary (hellbat TvT anyone?). But, you can't honestly say that much of what's posted here is 'feedback.' Trashing the game itself seems to be the currently popular thing to do in this thread, and that is something that doesn't help at all. That's just taking out anger anonymously and tearing at, not attempting to voice concern over, the game that you are implied to care about.

HotS gave the game a quick boost but we are basically back to the same game WoL was minus infestor/BL. Traditionally Blizzard expansions have saved/completed games but I think HotS struck out. The new units are boring, the oracle and tempest were maybe the two least exciting and creative things ever done by blizzard, seriously they thought those two hardly used units were good ideas? If I was MLG I'd move from sc2 as well because the future is bleak. Viewership is going to decline slowly.

I am just not sure what to be excited about with the future of the game, unless they massively patch it and fundamentally change many things risking imbalance in exchange for a better gaming experience. I am just not sure what to tune in for. We see same builds and unit comp in every matchup, and I'm not sure who the must see stars are anymore. People claim they only want to watch Koreans and see the best but that has pushed out a lot of relatable personalities. MLG shot themselves in the foot because they should have invested in local talent for longer term growth instead of flying in Koreans for quick ratings boost. I think if MLG just went back to the old open bracket with groups they would get a great response and it might do pretty good viewers.

So, a couple weeks ago everything was fine and dandy with SC2. Nice tourneys going on, Maru 4-0 Innovation among other things. Everybody was enjoying themselves with the game. Now suddenly, after some minor, random, unimportant events everybody is up in arms about how SC2 is dying, balance is horrible, and the earth will implode? Come on, guys.

I know what's going on. It's summer, everybody is bored out of their minds, TL is showing mass Dota content on the front page, they have a sick tournament going on, WCS EU has many Protosses, MLG drops SC2... It's too much to handle! It's time to do what we do best; create drama and whine. A LOT.

Shockingly accurate. Make more threads about the state of SC2 and why it should have mandatory chat rooms and free to play.

Sadly Blizzard doesn't care about LOL or how good they are at interacting with their community or how responsive they are to community concerns. Partially because of their arrogance as you mentioned and I'm sure also in part because LOL is a different gaming genre. While this is true it doesn't mean that they are competing for different shares of the gaming market because there are plenty of gamers that are into both and when you only have time to watch one event you'll most likely pick the more entertaining one which means Blizzard does need to be aware of how they're perceived in contrast to a company like Riot or Valve when it comes to spectator events. Sadly it seems that Blizz is still living in a bubble where they believe they can do no wrong. Hopefully whatever is preventing MLG from hosting SC2 will be resolved and we can all enjoy MLG Columbus with an SC2 tournament. Here's to hoping!

Blizzard is a very old company and they have seen video game companies rise and fall. In 2009 people were talking about facebook games taking over all gaming. 2010 it was games like rockband and guitar hero. 2011 it was CoD destorying all records. 2012 it was the rise of LoL.

Trying to respond to this stuff or chase the money that other people are making is a sure way to fail. Look at everyone who failed chasing Blizzard and WoW. You don't change everything just because someone else is making money.

This thread is disgusting.

From now we should have an "official whining SC2 is dying thread" (would be perfect if it were merged with the official balance thread).

It should just have its own forum and keep it out of the SC2. Then we could finally be free.

It's so much more worthwhile to run a stream of LoL than sc2 for two reasons 1. LoL has 10x the viewers 2. Majority of the LoL viewers are either stupid or kids and don't know what adblock is so most of those viewers actually are generating revenue. In sc2 you could have 10k viewers but 9 900 of them are using adblock so you're fucked anyway. This same thing applies to dota2 as well though, they may get a lot of viewers but they all use adblock, but they still get sponsor support similar to sc2 and slightly more ad revenue. SC2 has survived because of sponsor support for the most part and what little ad revenue can be generated. It's time to realize we got fucked by adblock.

I think it's worthwhile to note that this website and original community was dedicated to bw during a time when there was NOTHING except wcg for foreigners to look forward to, there was NO incentive to be a pro player unless you were one of the top koreans. The only thing keeping people here was the game itself, not how many viewers it got or how much money the pro players made. So everytime you get the sc2 is dieing feeling and you start to freak out in threads like this, it's useful to realize it's impossible for sc2 to fall as low as bw was. Everything will be fine. Sundance still needs to die though.

Sigh, and where did you get all this data? Let me guess, nowhere.
Truth is, a major LoL event gets at worse 2x Sc2 viewers, and that's more because the major sc2 event is having a bad day than the other way around, and usually it gets some 1,3x (90-100k vs 120-140k) these are the usual numbers, while on very good Sc2 days (and yes, they do NOT happen every month, especially not in summer) we get this.
+ Show Spoiler +
[image loading]

and i'm not even gonna comment the 99% adblock elitist nonsense, you're saying that you are using an adblock, and that "Sc2 viewer is hip and smart, LoL viewer is retarded",which also ignores the fact that even a ton of IT students/workers don't use adblock for a reason....
perhaps you should stop adblocking sc2 pages if you're worried about that. Probably Sc2 has a somewhat bigger adblock % on the population, but that's surely not a factor on the viability of a tournament.

Please, if you gotta cry about the end of the world(Sc2), use numbers that are less likely to make people facepalm, thanks.

I hate myselft for saying this, but I also got a little bored of SC2. I have been around since the WoL beta, but in the past months, I got more involved in other eSports (LoL). I feel that League is much more interesting right now.

Also, without ever watching Dota2 before, in the past 2 days I watched the international 3 with a friend. I was expecting the metagame to be similar to LoL and understand what was going on, but oh boy... was I wrong.

While I was familiar with the basics of farming and killing heroes (and I also knew about denies), I didn't understand very much. Champion abilities where a total unknown to me and the action was all over the place. But I liked it, and that what I was missing from SC2, ACTION. Every 2-3 minutes it felt that it was something interesting happen, unlike SC2 where there are large periods of time where NOTHING happens. I once had a friend (the same one as above) over to show him a WCS game, and during the game there so much downtime that we had time to discuss about SC2 unrelated stuff. This thing didn't happen with Dota2.

And this is coming from someone who tuned in to lots of pro players streams, watched most of the major tournaments. eSports as a whole is better now than 2-3 years ago, it's just that the focus isn't on SC2 anymore, and that is what's hurting us.

Incontrol said it best.. it's not dying it slowed down.. it's ok!

I become a point where you had to have a Artosis brain just to follow everyting and even him can't pick a winner... Let is flow, we will always have a scene.. Look at BW it still exists and has now 15 years!

WCS is a good thing, eventually

Incontrol is a fucking boss!

Indeed. I still love it as much as I did I did when I tuned into my first ever GSL match and saw MarineKing microing Marines like a god against Kyrix back in 2010. Of course I think the game could be so much better and blizzard annoy me, but w/e. still love it!

That should be the mectric for SC2 doing poorly: Is Artosis freaking out? No. Then SC2 is fine.
