I know this is worth at least a warning but someone needs to say it rather than pathetically trying to convince ourselves the game can survive with Blizzard at the wheel. I love posts like this. Make me truly appreciate the level of maturity some people lack, and the complete absence of a filter. You make a post in a sc2 thread trashing on sc2. Good1.
Well there is some truth to his statement. Blizzard has FAILED big time in a lot of ways with this game, especially the first 12-18 months after the games release. The community cried for a full 18 months before they took away close spawn positions, and starting actually listening to the community on what maps they want in the pool rather than what big brother Blizzard thinks is best for everyone.
I guess the best way to sum it up is to just look at Dota 2 and what Valve has done in a relatively short period of time and how well they have listened to the community, and look how well it has paid off. TI3 is going to be a huge deal and is already bringing up really good numbers.
Just think, it took Blizzard 2.5 years just to put in chat channels......just let that sink in.

Totalbiscuit @Totalbiscuit 3 min @kmicj NA Starcraft now has no large audience LAN event of any sort and no open bracket, that's REALLY FUCKING BAD
Totalbiscuit @Totalbiscuit 5 min @kmicj it doesn't matter who you work for, you cannot possibly not see this as terrible news
Well, at least one important personality isn't trying to drown the fish here.

This is so incredibly disappointing. I was planning on going to Columbus to watch, it would've been my first live Sc2 event. I know it's their second biggest game, so this just sounds like them shooting themselves in the foot.
Now I will no longer be watching or caring about MLG events.

Part of me wonders about the whole publishers running their own leagues thing is really pinching MLG's business model - indeed the entire concept of independent leagues. MLG has been hinting at this for some time, I imagine it has to do with a cost/benefit analysis. I'm guessing MLG does provide some sort of stipend/subsidy for qualified players (someone correct me if I'm wrong), and as it turns out, a bunch are from Korea, which makes it pretty expensive. CoD is all US based and I doubt MLG provides jack, and same with their LoL tourney. Its not ideal that SC2 isn't at Columbus, but I don't get the sense that MLG is abandoning SC2 completely. I'd rather they have one or two really big SC2 tourneys like they had back in WoL a year with a huge prize pool then the relatively smaller Anaheim 2013. Too bad they're private, would be interesting to poke around their financials.
I'm not sure (I really only follow Fighters & SC2), but I'm guessing the DOTA 2 and LoL scene outside of the International & LCS is relatively weak if not nonexistent. The numbers around e-sports are so murky, I'm not quite sure what the ROI is, Tencent's financials are like most Chinese companies - absolute garbage, Valve is private, and ATVI doesn't break that specific number down. There was speculation that we were in kind of a bubble back at the height of SC2 (and the beginnings of LoL), I don't know if we are, or if we're deflating. Wish there were a futures market we could play in.
I know MLG has made its name off of live events, but I don't how scalable that is, they've made some noises about moving towards a more ESPN type model where they produce esports shows. Maybe a WWE/ESPN amalgamation? Either way, with more and more publishers getting directly involved in making leagues for their games, the economics of being an independent league seems scarier and scarier.

Only big, open, offline StarCraft II tournament in NA.
Phases out StarCraft II.
Not sure if MLG is passively and dispassionately screwing us over or if the NA SC2 scene is really that bad. Inclined to believe it's a bit of both.

All the more reason to look forward to the next SC2 MLG then.

It didn't take them 2.5 years to put in chat channels though. Nowhere close to that. It took them 2.5 years to make them decent and relevant yes. Honestly while Blizzard has a habit of fucking up and shitting the bed every now and then, I can't fault them for not being psychic. The market changed after SC2 released. Riot innovated, Valve followed suit. StarCraft 2 was already a thing and Blizzard is in a hard spot because it's hard to change your entire product by that much once it's released.
Blizzard should have taken the reins sooner as far as the tournament scene goes, should have had their own massive event sooner, and should manage the regional aspect of it far better, but being totally honest I can see why they wouldn't think that they had to. It's only somewhat their fault that massive NA events catered to top Korean pros instead of nurturing the local scene.
In the end, Blizzard did fuck up a bit, but nowhere near what people claim.

I'd say mostly the former. That whole statement about not fitting in with their plans just screams emo.

GG Starcraft NA Scene... people like Demuslim and other talented players in NA should really move to europe.

I love the people looking at Dota 2 through rose colored glasses, as I attempt to play and get DCed 3 times a day, my parties get lock and I can't invite people. Or the store bugs out or my client bugs out during game and I need to reconnect. Have to pause for a disconnect at least once every other game.

The thing that really upsets me about this is the impact it has on the midwest SC2 scene. A huge swath of the united states very rarely has any events anywhere near us. I live in Ohio and MLG columbus was the only event within a 10-12 hour drive of me every year. Not having sc2 at cbus means the entire midwestern scene who could only financially justify going to MLG cbus is just kinda... totally out of luck now. From the amateur/up and coming players around here hoping to participate in the open bracket to people who just want to watch it live... this really hurts.

If this is what it takes for Blizzard to realize they need to do something, and do it fast, then so be it. The metagame at this point is just pathetic to look at.

esports was already a thing well before sc2 came out. there are no excuses for blizzard. there is only blizzard's dumbfounded, egotistic attitude towards the game and what they believe is right for us.
also just a reminder that the biggest thing killing sc2 for the casual player, maphacking, is still rampant and blizzard seems not to care two shits about it.

time to man up then
you can try and work on sc2 from the ground up or just sit around and be sad over it
sc2 scene could learn a thing or two from how grassroots the fgc has always been
