How long have you been living in Japan? Or did you just put your country to "Japan" for fun? It's not too far off, that playing PC games is linked to Erotic Games in Japan. Anime like "Ore no imouto ga konnani kawaii wake ga nai" show, in this case, a girl hording Erotic games and other stuff and lending it to her brother. "Boku ha tomodachi ga sukunai" also has a girl that plays "Eroge" on her notebook. Also it seems like families rather have notebooks than a normal computer, probably because of the limited space they get in their apartments. I've lived in Japan for 2 years so far, and was married to a Japanese woman for 3 years before I came over. From your examples listed, I'm not even going to go into it because you sound like some weaboo that seems to have some strange view of Japan from your weird ass animes and is stating it as a fact when it is actually just some obscure observation that no one I have spoken to even has ever heard of before. I'm going to take you saying " seems like families have notebooks than normal computers" to mean you've never actually been to Japan or have only visited for a short time. In Kanagawa and Tokyo at least, everyone I know has a desktop computer. Even my friends who live in little apartments still have room for computers. Hell, even my girlfriend's mother has her own PC. Japanese houses and apartments/mansions are small yes, but small enough to not have room for a computer? That is another telltale that A. you either have never actually been to Japan, or B. you went to some desolate prefecture that shouldn't be generalized as all of Japan. So to answer your question, no, I didn't just put Japan as my country for fun. Thanks for asking though. Well, even someone who has always lived in Japan can't be sure about how popular notebooks are vs desktops, so the "seems like" sounds legit. However I am pretty sure notebooks have a bigger market share here compared to Europe for instance (based on how many notebooks are shown compared to desktops in big shops such as Yodobashi Camera + own experience).
Obviously it depends on who you know in Japan. If you speak about married persons with a house, obviously they have room for a desktop PC, if you are considering younger people they may live in a 1-room. In some small households, even in Tokyo, you will have mostly tatami rooms with no desk. I think the amount of families with these old fashioned appartments is constantly decreasing, so that the amount of desktops is likely to increase in that regard. So well, maybe the children born in these households will be more likely to get into PC gaming, but habits in Japan are hard to change.

Then stage 3 is all about winning to qualify to a playoff? sorry for being slow :D Now that the server can be selected, it could be the KR server, Korea has the best ping from Japan (a pretty good one given it's overseas). But actually almost every japanese plays with the US version of the game. If you try to buy SC2 online in Japan, you automatically get to the US battle.net, based on your IP and regardless of your PC settings.

What surprises me the most about hearing this is that as far as I know there's no Japanese language version of Starcraft II - or any other Blizzard game here, for that matter. Never been quite sure as to why that's the case.
It's definitely true in my experience that PC gaming isn't nearly as big as handheld or console gaming, but I'd stop short of characterizing all computer gaming as eroge. If you only used Akihabara or Denden Town as examples, then yeah, maybe. There is from what I can see a definite lack of Japanese-made PC games and they don't tend to like the Western ones that are made, so there's not a whole lot of market at the moment.

"How to go from the most narrow minded statement to the most open minded one, once someone proved you wrong" Could be a title to that post.
In your first post it's almost like your trying to educate the reader. You force your opinion and so called "knowledge" of Japan on others and pretend it's fact. Than suddenly someone who actually may know shit about the country starts proving you wrong and you're like "Oh shit ... better rephrase what I say in a less categoric way or I'll look like a dummy"...
And here we are: forum posting 101
Back on Topic:
I'm a huge fan of Competitive Gaming in general (SC2, DOTA, Fighting Games) and I've always thought japanese players with their hard work and dedication (comparable to Korean players) could definitely translate those skills to more mediatized games such as SC2 or Mobas. I'm really glad to finally see it happening and I hope this could help dynamize the asian scene outside of Korea.

I didn't say all computer gaming in Japan was eroge of course, I just said it's big enough to be somewhat associated to the image of PC gaming in Japan. And well, imo Akiba must be at least representative of a big part of gaming in Japan. But yes, there are some other japanese popular games on PC (Monster Hunter and FFXI for instance). Until recently it was actually funny to see these FFXI benchmarks running on gaming PCs in shops here, as if FFXI and its antique graphics would be able to benchmark a recent PC ^^
But now some good hardware shops (Tsukumo, Ark) in Akiba have pretty nice gamer hardware (headsets, mouse, keyboards, mouse cable holders, chairs...). Most of them with some foreign game playable (often it's an FPS).
When WoL was released I remember there were signs announcing it in some streets near the shops selling it. This is why more recently with HotS, I actually searched a bit for an EU version of HotS (as my WoL was EU I need to upgrade with an EU box version). I went to a shop that appeared to be selling like 95% of PC games in eroge and 5% in foreign games, so that the guy didn't even seem to know SC2... I didn't search too long but in the area I was there were tons of eroge and no trace of HotS (well it was before the release but I was looking for some announcement). I think that was the wrong place to get my game but still, pretty disapointing (that's where I remember seeing these SC2 signs when WoL was released).

That's very interesting to hear. Was there any competitive sc1 scene ? Because if it didn't it means that the success of a SC2 pro scene in Japan will only be assured by SC2 alone without the whole broodwar legacy, without any big names... Only Heart of the Swarm.

When I went to Tougeki 2010, the winners got 1 Hori Real Arcade Pro VX Arcade as their price. A friend of mine also told me that "DUNE", a Japanese KoF player, had organized a tournament with sponsorship and price money. Wait let me get this right. You just used 2 comedy (one completely anime/otaku as whole subject) anime as proof? Oh man, if we based off every country on 2 shows you happen to saw form there then i guess watching a show like trailer park boys means nobody in America has a real house and everyone lives in a trailer right. Do you have any idea how insane your logic is? I didn't base it on those 2 Anime shows, but gave them as an example. From my experience there is still a quite negative image of people playing video games in Japan (which anime also depict. Dunno if I have ever seen a Gamer or PC Programmer shown as a super awesome person in an Anime). PCs were mainly used for eroge or other adult stuff, that was not allowed on consoles. Even the huge fighting game community doesn't get much love. There are much more sponsored players in the US or Europe than in Japan, even though the Japanese dominate pretty much every game. Anyway, GL to the Japanese guys. Hope they can make something happen
I don't know why that other guy says such stupid things but you are totally right. In japan 70% of all sold PC games are eroge or visual novels. There are a few exceptions, like S;G but mostly they do Rancer Hatoful, etc.
Not like I'm not rooting for SCtoo over there but their gaming culture comes from arcades and consoles, that's just the way it is.

I propose there be anime graphics for starcraft 2 with cell-shading. It will look like an episode of CarbotAnimation's Starcrafts.

I'm so excited for this. When I studied abroad in Japan I saw a lot of SC2 since all the time zones lined up perfectly! I'd be able to start watching American and European tournaments in the morning and such and also catch the GSL since it's in the same time zone as Korea. I always wondered why I didn't see many Japanese pro gamers in the international scene at all since I't so so close to Korea. Anyway, I hope to see their scene grow more and more!

I'm surprised to find so many Japan-knowers/Japanese-speakers here. I'd figure one would find more people interested in Korea. "Yokohama" are you a fellow Yokohama:er? : D
At the discussion whether PC = eroge or not, I'd say having a PC is not weird at all (where would you otherwise look at Outlook Express?). However "playing games on PC" is quite "nerdy". Even if it isn't eroge, it is way more "nerdy" than playing games on console or at the arcade. My view of it is that being "nerdy" is becomming more and more okay, but it still looked down upon by majority of the society.
