Happy and Dayshi qualify for WCS EU Premier League
As the dust settled from one of the most gruelling qualifiers in Starcraft 2 memory, two players emerged to claim spots in WCS Europe's Premier division. Empire|Happy, 2nd place finisher at WCS Russia 2012, and Mill.Dayshi, the runner-up of WCS France, took their places alongside the 24 invited players.
Happy's road was largely clear of globally known opposition, facing players like Krolu and Krass in the lower rounds. He faced off against Bling in Premier division deciding semi-final match, and won a 2 - 0 victory. Dayshi's road to the cherished qualification spot was more notable, including players such as Feast, GoOdy and China's XiGua.
Both players put in a marathon effort, with the 1024 man qualifier taking nearly 9 hours to complete. As the tournament had been run through ESL's Go4SC2 weekly cup system, there was also a 100 euro first place prize on the line. However, neither player seemed very interested after winning the far more valuable WCS Premier spots, and consecutively cheesed each other in the final to leave Happy the ostensible winner by a 3 - 2 score.
Koreans wiped out
The participation of Koreans in other WCS regions had been a topic of much debate, but the Europeans held their ground on the first day of qualifiers. TAiLS, Daisy, Shuttle, and finale, the four Korean players who decided they would take a shot at the EU region, were all knocked out by the Ro32.
The most unusual upset was that of TAiLS, a regular in the MVP GSTL lineup. A French Masters player called Daloze rose up and struck down the Korean invader, demonstrating the volatility of the Bo1 format used in the earlier rounds of the tournament.
TAiLS wasn't the only one to be bested by a best of one, as even some of Europe's best fell victim. NightEnD's duel against an unknown German named AxiR in the Ro512 in a PvP ended in a surprise loss for the Romanian, much to AxiR's jubilation.
The qualifiers will continue in the same format for three more days, with the top two players from each day's tournament winning spots in the WCS Premier division. Qualifier #2 begins tomorrow at 16:00 GMT (+00:00).
well play by dayshi's performance with xigua, but xigua nearly fall asleep during the game (4AM in the morning in china), and give dayshi too many free units. Maybe he will have a good rest and startover again with day 2 premier matches.

Yeah but man, this is the first season, with open qualifiers straight into Premier division, so I was expecting them to try and avoid as much randomness as possible. For the next seasons they can do Bo1, fine. But this is the first season so I was hoping for more.
Anyway Bo3 starting Ro128 isn't so bad. Thankfully with the GSL format, anyone who lucks their way into Premier/Challenger and doesn't deserve the spot will be weeded out quickly. Hopefully all of the best players make it eventually.

There's one today(15th), tomorrow and wednesday. Today and tomorrow have a max of 256 participants and with the ro256 being the only with bo1 these might be a bit more interesting

I would not make a big deal out of it. Its not like we will observe it in the future. Those direct-to-premier qualifiers are a one time event. They had to do something, to fill the remaining 8 spots in the beginning. Of course they could seed all 32 spots, but it could create community outrage.
Like you said, given time, situation will settle down on its own thanks to the unforgiving format, season after season we will get to the best player base possible.
It was a good day yesterday, unfortunately there were some problems with the streams. Hopefully today things will run smoother. And hopefully a zerg will qualify

only realistic thing that they can do given the size of the field and every single tournament's outright refusal to use anything other than a straight knockout
Empire Happy is epic and Dayshi is on fire ! Who will be next ? It would be cool if BratOK qualified maybe a protoss would be good too...Bling played really well yesterday so why not ?
guys i think the only way to make it fair is to do 1024 player round robin to seed all of the players with everyone playing each other twice just to make up for fluke wins. then do bo7 quintuple elimination brackets
Seriously, with half of the matches being Bo1 it took 9 hours to complete. Now imagine it would be all Bo3... it would take like 12-14 hours just for one qualifier...

I think people assume they would roflstomp a lot of players and take all the top spots. Frankly, I thought they would do the same lol but I'm happy to hear that EU can hold its own. I doubt NA can tbh XD

They are doing 4 qualifiers to make up for the BO1s early on.
If you lose in a BO1 4 times, you really have no excuse.

No suprise EU can hold its own. KauP also took a map from finale. We might not have the players that can reach the Koreans peak, but EU has a lot of depth and a lot of players that know how to play the game. Now take into credit that the Koreans also play with lag and you shouldn't be suprised if they lose at all.
Doubt it will work out as well on NA, because a) NA is inferior to EU and b) there are more Koreans and c) lag isn't as bad as KR/EU.
There's really just DemusliM I hope for. He would really deserve a spot in my eyes.
Glad to see both these guys qualify cause Happy has always been one of the best in Europe and people forget and Dayshi was getting really good at the end of WOL

I don't know, did you account for random power spikes creating unplayable lag for the korean players that somehow doesn't knock them out of the game, forcing them to play through it? Thirty five times in a row? You should really take that into account. Bo9 might work better.

That is awesome that Europeans defended their own soil. I don't like how so many players got an invite. Everyone should have to earn a place in my opinion.

Anyways, congratulations to Happy and Dayshi. As the two killer of German hope (Happy eliminating KrasS and Dayshi eliminating GoOdy) they at least had the decency to qualify this time.

yep people should stop blame the koreans only lost because of bo1 ... and also i think daisy is in europe so also no lag its just that krass is "Krass" whats the german word for crass / really phat, and beasty is perhaps not the most mannered guy, but definitly a very skilled guy

Yes, that feels so good to see Tails and finale (and other koreans) fall. They're no match for other koreans (mostly), so they just thought of going to europe and have an easy time. HAHA! fuck those guys.

Daisy has made leaps and bounds lately - he's really good though; Considering he spent a year living in Germany, and plays for a European team, I wouldn't mind at all seeing him play in EU premier.

Quite ignorant to not factor in the lag that from playing KR to EU, while Tails and finale are not the cream of the crop of Koreans, they are still not pushovers, the Europeans are lucky to have had another advantage over them.
Overall good games yesterday, I was particularly impressed with Dayshi, his play was masterful on a number of occasions, I was in awe of how he managed to deflect a massive ling bane bust from Xigua and come back to win in the mid game, great display of micro.

There's little wrong with Bo1s, the only time it's random is with build order wins, but in a Bo1 you don't open super greedy, you open super safe and then you just outright win if they cheese you.

there's undoubtedly a big lag adv for the European players, if there wasn't you'd have seen more Koreans sign up for EU instead of NA. Obv it's not 100% unwinnable since players like HyuN and Revival have won Go4SC2 before, but it still makes the game a lot harder.
The Koreans knew this when they made this choice, so they will have to live with the ramifications of it.

Wasn't it beacuse NA qualifier will be 256 bracket with lots of bye in the first rounds and all koreans qualifing?
Its quite possible that koreans "died" to the fatigue - apparently XiGua almost fall asleep during the games LINK and is planning to change his sleep strategy for today's qualifier.
it is code S there, its big, these guys have just won 1 k euro and a chance to compete for 40 k in a 100 k tournament, but even greater, they proved that they are among the best 20 players of EU.

the best of one format is horrible. it doesnt matter if they have 4 chances to qualify, because they are playing 4 differet players (assuming they are all different). and they could all have different cheeses. mind games is a big part of sc2 that they are taking out of tournament with this format

I don't think you truly respect the number of games that would need to be played for 1,000 players to each have best of threes at all stages of the event. This thing needs to happen in a reasonable period of time.

I dont think so. I'm pretty sure the only way to qualify is to make top 2 in a qualifier because there are only 6 spots left to fill. Only the three first rounds are BO1, rest is BO3. All but one of the Koreans actually reached BO3 where they got eliminated. And as for the one Korean who got beaten in the BO1 it was a macro game and not some cheese that killed him.
Was great to follow but the format is not really great for such an important tournament... I know they probably didn't have enough time to plan something better or maybe they don't care enough but BO1 is stupid because even the best players in the world can lose a BO1. There is a reason why BO3/BO5 is the way to go...
Not gonna happen but i think the best would have been to make it a 2 days tourney : - unlimited numbers of spot (free of course) - bo3 from the start - make them play from 1pm to 10 pm (or something like that) for both days - quarters and semi bo5 (or only semis because they give the WCS spots)
Yes it would take more time to organize and everything but would be much much better and it would be fair to everyone. You are an awesome player but lose 0-2 against a noname in the first round ? Too bad you had your chance in a BO3 and you lost, get out.
Honestly it's great to see something like the WCS but i think they should do it in a more professional way. Making a 10 hours tournament with BO1 at the start is a not what a professional tourney should be. They want to crown the world champion but they start with a qualifier with BO1 it's a bit sad.
In the end of course 2 great players qualified but the BO1 at the start is really bad for such a tourney IMO.
Anyways... It's like that so let's just hope everything goes well and that the best players make it through so we can have the best players fighting at the end.

If you get taken out of the tournament 4 times in a row in the few "not bo3 yet" rounds you don't deserve by any means to be a part of Code S (or what you might call it). It basically means you play greedy as fuck and are in some way a cheeser on your own. Against player you don't know or who are not as good as you it should be possible to choose a safe build that is save to most cheeses.

Yeah I feel that way to and the Challenger and Premier Leagues will be awesome too. Also, the fact that korean "invaders" are trying to qualify is making the thing even more great, and in premier League we ll have Mvp MMA ForGG... really looking forward to it !
This is the part that seems crazy to me: Qualifier league info: The WCS America Qualifying tournament on April 20 and 21 will feature 512 players competing online in a, BO3, double elimination bracket. That is SO many games. SO many with double elimination. Still, hopefully the best make it through(DeMusliM).

Got no idea why people come here to complain when they obviously barely know anything about the tournaments that are hosted, get real cocaine snorters, lets praise ESL for the qualification efforts and the participating players, I'm sure they do a way better job than any other organization would have done.

Tails, finale,Daisy,StarDust aren't THAT good for koreans... They have the level of european players that's why they lost.
I guess it should also be noted that they're all toss. Betcha 5 bucks they all lost in a laggy PvP or a regular PvP.

Finale and Daisy both lost to terrans in a BO3, so nope.

Firstly there's 4 Koreans and over 1000 other competitors with the first 3 rounds been BO1, the odds aren't exactly in their favour. Secondly these are B teamer Koreans at best; Tails has never had any notable achievemets other than been a 1 match team-league sniper, Daisy is just your middle of the road Code B Korean who spent a long time in Europe, StarDust I've never heard of so can't comment. Finale is the only one in there who stands out but is it really inconceivable that any number of the top names in that open bracket can defeat him in a BO3? Even Kaup nearly managed to take him down in the RO64.
Of course no one will deny that lag is an issue, but I think you greatly underestimate the skill of the player pool and the stamina (and at times luck) required to complete an 9 stage single elimination bracket.
It'll be a little more interesting in Season 2 when players at MC's caliber will be competing.
I'm glad that Dayshi beat Feast in semifinal, because Feast will qualify in an other qualifier, no doubt about that. Dayshi is not as solid, so another run would have been difficult.
Reading through this thread made me incredibly sad. Do people expect a 1024 player tournament that lasted 9+ hours as it is to be longer by making it Bo3s?
You guys are really gonna defend the Koreans and make excuses for them? They knew there would be lag, they knew it would be at a bad time, they chose EU anyway. These Europeans no doubt would have given them a run for their money at any LAN as well, it's not surprising they lost.
Terran in EU pretty strong, where are all the Zergs? Vortix, Stephano (I guess US and KR, EU misses Stephano!), Nerchio, Lowely? I guess Widow mines will be changed/nerfed...

Vortix, Stephano and Nerchio did get a direct seed.

Yup and they chose eu for a good reason. Outside of finale none of them would be considered even near code s level and NA seemed to be a bit crowded (with koreans)
