Don't base your judgement upon what the placement matches put you in. I got silver in hots after winning all 5 placement matches while being diamond in WoL. The placement matches literally just mean you've played 5 games.

WOL doesn't carry over to HOTS

they have separate MMR. However, if you have not done your placement matches yet for the unranked AND the ranked one, then they share the same MMR

Fuck. I went 4-1 and placed in silver, fuck the system

Team MMR also uses your 1v1 rating (and you partner's) for placement since the beginning of WoL.

I have a high diamond/masters MMR in Ranked, and silver gold in unranked (I leave mirrors, and play off races, try bad cheese)..... consistently, so I think they are definitely separate.

To be fair, in the first few days the disparity in mmr was probably small and the ladder system needs some time to sort everyone out as we all know. But interestingly, if this is true, I played a player in a 1v1 when i played an unranked game the other day, but he said it was a ranked game for him. No, we did make sure and everything, I lost no bonus pool and it still was floating over unranked too.
Lots of weird changes in ranked, but this one is a little odd in my opinion knowing that both mmr's will constantly shift in relation to eachother.

see, this is how this goes (i think) when all those giddy people started doing their placement matches right after release, there were NO people in higher ranks (everything is reset). I if guessed it right, the maximum league you get to be placed in was GOLD (even winning all matches). Why? there were NO people up in the higher ranks to determine that you are that good to be placed there. Due to that, your MMR stays about the same when playing vs other people who are either unranked or still in the lower leagues. Now however, the higher leagues are populated and once you get to win a few matches, your MMR jumps depending on the league of your opponent. You mentioned you got to play vs plats and a dia and won. Since you beat those guys, you deserve to be in Dia.
In my case, I played my placements maybe 3 days after release, when all other people were busy with the campaign or just started doing their placement matches too. The last season of WoL I was dia. But the highest ranked player i got to face during my placement was Gold and I won all my placement matches, so I was placed in Gold. So did the other people from our National Community that was laddering at the time. But guess what, after 3-5 games games they were promoted, some even got to GM pretty fast once it was opened!
As for Unranked MMR in relation to Ranked MMR, me thinks it has no effect whatsoever. I noticed back in the beta when I played unranked, i always start to face lower leagued players each time i start playing. So I'm guessing that whenever you log in, your unranked MMR resets to 0 and depending on how well you do during the games over the course of a session that MMR starts to build up. Once you log-out, it gets deleted and when you log-in again, you start from the beginning. Pretty decent implementation IMO, since that would mean you would get to know how well your doing when trying different builds/races or w/e.
I hope this helps :D

wtf I thought they cap it to platinum? My friend won 5 games straight, I won 4/5 and got into plat.

If you go from unranked to ranked play it will use your MMR in UR to inform your ranked rating, and vice versa. However once you start playing both your MMR can diverge. You could very well be a bronze player on unranked and a masters player on ranked, once they start to diverge they become unrelated.

several things here, MMR was reset in HOTS, so everything in WoL does not matter. so every league, 1v1 2v2,3v,4v4 is at a fresh MMR. and unranked is technically a league with its own MMR as well, with the same 5 placement games, but it doesnt show these as everything with unranked is hidden.
Now heres the fun part. The MMR's of your other placements affect placement matches of new leagues. So say your masters 2v2,3v3,4v4, and go play 1v1, it will use those MMR's as a starting point for placement matches in 1v1. The same thing happens for unranked. as unranked is technically a part of the same system, but doesnt display anything at all to the user.
also people comparing placement match records, the record has nothing to do with placement. (well technically it does but...not directly into placement) Now say we will take players A, B, C, D for this example.
Player A, fresh account right at release of HOTS goes 5-0 placement platinum Player B, Fresh account but after release of hots by a long time goes 5-0 diamond.
Why did this happen? Because Player B played higher rated players to start with than player A. Player A started with an opponent that was also not ranked, giving less of a MMR gain as opposed to beating an established player.
Player C, never played 1v1, but is high masters in 2v2 goes 2-3 in 1v1 placement masters.
Why because Player C had an starting MMR, and beat opponents in that range.
and player D, plays alot of unranked has a starting MMR, can get placed high. Just like player C!
alot of how ladders work can be explained in this thread. http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/viewmessage.php?topic_id=195273

What a crazy scenario... So this basically shows that you have no way of knowing how highly ranked your opponent is, since they could be playing unranked. Unfortunate, since it helps put things into perspective when you know the ranking of your opponent. Not everyone is a GM player who can accurately analyse and judge their opponents play. In theory, the experience I had was just an outlier. Either people sandbag forever to keep their rating low(in which case they're not practicing and maintaining their skills, most likely, and in any case this was possible with the old system) or they eventually win or lose enough so that their two MMR achieve parity. In theory

HOTS just came out so MMR isn't spread out perfectly yet

yesterday i was playing unranked and the guy said what it was ranked for him?

Theres not enough players to have a completely seperate ranked and unranked ladder - Its just ranked/unranked based on what you choose, and the match finder finds whoever is in your MMR regardless of ladder

I think it makes sense, both that they would use the same MMR and that unranked is associated with ranked in that way. If your 5 placement matches are the first games you play; then a whole bunch of stuff (statistically) prevents the placement matches from being thoroughly accurate with only 5 games of 'data'. If your unranked MMR carries over then you have X+5 amount of games to establish a reference point for whom you should be placed against in the first place, in fact I wish I had known, and played a few unranked matches before my placements; I'm generally platinum-diamond area depending on how frequently I get to play but my rusty placements 3 W, 2 L put me in silver to start (fast climb sure; but odd nonetheless) and having noticed that I checked my Placement opponents, placements; if memory serves it was in order bronze; bronze; master; silver; platinum server populations was probably a big factor in my case (hopefully) but seeing as how 'battle.net' only knew I could win against bronze players, got destroyed by a masters, beat a silver and lost again to a platinum; reasonably assuming I'm probably in the Silver area, whereas theoretically 2, or 3 extra games 'unranked' could have provided enough steps in data collection to get me to a few more platinum/diamond opponents and saved the few extra in-league games to get where I know my limit is.
|
Placement not really the biggest deal in my opinion. You'll end up where you are supposed to be.
|
I'm high platinum and I keep getting masters playing ranked games when I queue unranked.
When I queue ranked I keep getting platinum/diamond.
Doesn't make any sense.
