So I'd been playing unranked 1v1's since HOTS release. Today I decided to do my 5 placement matches. I proceed to win 3 of 5 and fully expected to get placed into gold MAYBE platinum. To my surprise, I got placed directly into diamond. I'd heard of people winning all 5 of their placement matches and getting placed into platinum so this came as a surprise to me.

I'd been playing unranked 1v1's and the system had been placing me purely against diamond with some master's here and there. Did that have anything to do with it?

I'm pretty sure they have separate MMR's. I was ranked diamond borderline masters level mmr, but when I played unranked as it came out I was playing against bronze and silvers.

They've said the share the same players, so I would assume it would be the same MMR

Same, when I played unranked it'd consistently place me against unplaced or silver-gold level players while I was in diamond.

IIRC if you play unranked and then go to ranked, it uses your unranked MMR initially. The MMR's separate soon, but I don't know how long it takes for the ranked MMR to become separate (1 game? all 5 placement games?). There was a thread explaining this at some point.

The win 5->platinum was probably only the few days right after release since MMR takes a while to get sorted out

this is how it should work:

Initially, you have no MMR for both ranked and unranked brackets.
When you played a lot of unranked, the system would create a hidden MMR to place you against equally-skilled opponents.

Now you have X MMR for unranked, and ranked bracket does not have a MMR.

When you play your placement matches on ranked bracket, the system will search for an equally skilled opponent - based on the only information they have of you, your unranked MMR - and then deviate from that.

Now you have two separate MMRs for ranked and unranked.

In other words, the same way the system will place you vs similar skilled players when you first play unranked after many ranked matches, the same applies when you play several unranked and play ranked matches for the first time.

This makes sense. Also, the other day I was playing ranked(I'm in Bronze FYI) and was placed against someone in Master League. He told me he was playing unranked and had a much lower MMR in unranked play.

What a crazy scenario... So this basically shows that you have no way of knowing how highly ranked your opponent is, since they could be playing unranked. Unfortunate, since it helps put things into perspective when you know the ranking of your opponent. Not everyone is a GM player who can accurately analyse and judge their opponents play.

Well I also think that ranked and unranked games share the same MMR. I was high diamond in ranked - I played with masters. When I switched to unranked I also played masters for some time but now I only see diamonds. Which kinda sucks for me, because I play Zerg in ranked, but random in unranked and I'm really bad with non-Zergs;]

I know this doesn't make sense, but that's what I'm experiencing.

As far as I know, your mmr from one is used to seed your mmr in the other, as soon as you have played a game on both unranked and on ranked, they then have separate mmr's. But if you only play unranked and then go to place for ranked, your placement matches will start with your unranked mmr.

I played about 70 unranked games with a diamond MMR and did my placement won them all and got placed in gold. All the players I went against while doing my placement were gold, silver or bronze

I think the mmrs are about the same. I played mostly ranked and was only playing masters players, and then i went to unranked and got the same thing

i played 2 grandmasters today and everything from gold to master.... unranked needs to be unranked

The one difference between mine and your scenario is that of the 3 wins I got, 1 of them was in diamond and the other 2 were in platinum. Maybe my unranked Diamond MMR plus the MMR's of the people that I beat in the placement matches was what got me placed directly into diamond.

I'm pretty sure it does not share MMR. However, all players will queue up against each other, ranked or not. It's just the person that's searching for ranked match will gain or lose points and the unranked person won't.

hm pretty interesting　i was under the impression that you couldn't even place higher than platinum in the initial 5 matches.
