Tourists, or would be tourists would likely know beforehand of the consequences of breaking a law in a foreign country before visiting it. Discussions of the death penalty aside, you should also know that homosexuality is not explicitly forbidden by the law. I would sincerely appreciate it if you could find me a section in the penal code which states so. There is a large gay community in Singapore. Please don't spread false truths. Whilst cultural acceptance of homosexuality is a problem for the country, it is in no way illegal. Just keep what you do behind close doors and you ought to be fine. On the grounds of political demonstrations... no comment..heh. ^^ | ||

by the way the ESL post in slightly misleading. the event will take place at Singapore Expo, which is not what's shown in the photo (that's Marina Bay Sands Casino). Singapore Expo is far from the city (near the airport though) and basically a place for warehouse sales and exhibitions and mega churches. Not glitzy at all. | ||

Newsflash, half of our celebrities are openly gay. (Ok not half, but quite a handful of them) The government has already officially stated that they do not oppress or dislike homosexuals. Consuming weed will not get you executed. You get into trouble for bringing in or selling drugs. There is virtually no credible opposition here. People here are living comfortably, have jobs, education is partially subsidized, we have the best healthcare system in Asia, can literally walk into any place at any time and feel safe without worrying about some gangbanger shooting you in the face, what do we have to complain about. | ||

i don't doubt that people can live a happy life there if you adapt yourself to the scene.. but coming from central europe, singapore is one scary place.. it's the most modern dictatorship and things like killing that 18 year old boy from nigeria who was obviously being used as a drug trafficker is quite frightening.. it's funny that people from there defend this government since there isn't even an opposition... all were being killed or held prison.. anyway my concern that things can go terribly wrong if hundreds of young people from all over the world gather in a place with such strict and unprogressive laws isn't unjustified at all.. Coz... stability and if most of the people like the stance on drug trafficking and support capital punishment it's no big deal? Western countries make too big a deal out of democracy. It has its merits, but it's far from being THE political model.
