Intel Extreme Masters head to Singapore
The Intel Extreme Masters will make its first visit to Singapore. From the 22-25th of November the SITEX, one of the most renowned consumer electronics trade shows in southeast Asia, will be host to the second Intel Extreme Masters stop of the season. The StarCraft II and League of Legends tournaments come with a total of 82.000$ in prize money. The winners will earn spots for the World Championship at CeBIT 2013 in Hanover, Germany.
"The tour has never been to Singapore before. It is a strategic goal for ESL and for Intel to bring eSports at the highest level to new territories every season in order to develop competitive gaming worldwide," says Michał Blicharz, the Director of Pro Gaming at Turtle Entertainment GmbH. "We are excited to see what kind of reception local fans will give to gaming superstars at SITEX 2012."

The Intel Extreme Masters Singapore do not act as a replacement event for the recently cancelled Intel Extreme Masters China. Both events were planned stops from the beginning of the season.
The fact that the players qualified for IEM China get some IEM points and a better seeding for IEM Singapore qualifiers is great, that's what I was expecting from IEM, they always do a good job.

There are no invites. People from each region have to qualify. The best available is seed in Stage 2 or 3 of the qualification (number of pre-seeded players is different for each region).
Stage 1 Qualification process for each region (Europe/Africa, America, China, SEA, KR/TW) will be announced in the coming days.

totally against this.. singapore is a modern dictatorship.. they kill tourists for smoking weed, homosexuality is forbidden by law and don't ever try to make a political demonstration or anything close to that... misanthropic place!!

And how does this relate to starcraft?
I am not advocating blind patriotism in any way but if anything, at least recognise that Singapore is a society that prioritizes stability above all else. In this respect, you can at least have a guarantee against a repeat of the IEM China incident, and you can be assured that things such as visa issues would be highly unlikely to occur.
In respect to your statements, do note that while drugs are illegal in Singapore, trafficking is the crime that attracts the death penalty. Tourists, or would be tourists would likely know beforehand of the consequences of breaking a law in a foreign country before visiting it. Discussions of the death penalty aside, you should also know that homosexuality is not explicitly forbidden by the law. I would sincerely appreciate it if you could find me a section in the penal code which states so.
There is a large gay community in Singapore. Please don't spread false truths. Whilst cultural acceptance of homosexuality is a problem for the country, it is in no way illegal. Just keep what you do behind close doors and you ought to be fine.
On the grounds of political demonstrations... no comment..heh. ^^

On homosexuality
After the exhaustive Penal Code review in 2007, oral and anal sex were legalised for heterosexuals and female homosexuals only. The changes meant that oral and anal sex between consenting heterosexual and female homosexual adults were no longer offences but section 377A, which dealt with gross indecency between consenting men, remained in force. You may be homo here, but try to keep in check your raging passions and not do 'that' on the train or in a public place.
On political demostrations No comment... I have no idea what is going on with the recent changes in the new Public Order Act. I think you can still host a political speech at the Speaker's corner. Though I think you should time any sociopolitical speeches to coincide with the next election, which should be held in 2016.
On killing tourists for smoking weed.
Countries that apply capital punishment for drugs Country Charge(s) Method of execution Afghanistan Afghanistan firing squad / hanging Bangladesh Bangladesh firing squad / hanging Brunei Brunei hanging China China firing squad / lethal injection Cuba Cuba firing squad Egypt Egypt Drug trafficking firing squad / hanging Indonesia Indonesia firing squad Iran Iran Trafficking or manufacturing of any drug, and third conviction for drug possession, distribution or sales firing squad / hanging Iraq Iraq firing squad / hanging Jordan Jordan Drug trafficking hanging Kuwait Kuwait firing squad / hanging Laos Laos hanging Malaysia Malaysia hanging North Korea North Korea Drug trafficking or manufacturing firing squad Oman Oman firing squad Qatar Qatar decapitation Pakistan Pakistan hanging Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia decapitation Singapore Singapore Drug trafficking in more than the following specified quantities:

Also the death penalty is no long mandatory for drug trafficking and is subject to the discretion of the judge.
Think of it as the ultimate safe place, a drug free society without guns. So long as you live an upright life, you have absolutely nothing to fear. As for being a dictatorship... even if the mass media is controlled by the government, we have the highest smartphone penetration rate in the world... one of the highest computer literacy/Internet usage, some of the best universities, let's just say our society can think for itself.
[Edit]FYI, all these is related to the sociopolitical landscape of Singapore and should have no bearing on Starcraft 2. If you are a foreigner, just come over and enjoy. Cultures are different all across the world.

On October 15 2012 17:55 markrevival wrote: holy crap i had no idea Singapore had such a brutal, oppressive government. Seems like the citizens like it that way too. Why? Huh? What do you mean brutal and oppressive? TLDR, here are my points
1) Gays making out in public in any country would probably get them arrested too 2) Singapore, like the United States, can sentence drug traffickers to death. The sentence is much lesser for consumers. 3) For political demonstrations, you can hold them if you get a permit. If you mean those mass spontaneous ones where a mob gathers, the situation isn't that bad for society to do such a thing. Also, the opposition here isn't as good as the main party (unlike the US).
And if the citizen don't like it, he can just immigrate. Unlike North Korea. As for political demonstrations, look at Myanmar (getting better now), or China (Tibet). By no means is the govt 'brutal'.
[Edit] I would like to clarify that I thought making out means 'having sex'. Just throwing in a outrageous scenerio.

I'll be attending this with a few friends so hopefully one of you guys will be wearing a TL shirt so we can hang out. :D

Back to topic w/o the politics, this is great news for the region.
by the way the ESL post in slightly misleading. the event will take place at Singapore Expo, which is not what's shown in the photo (that's Marina Bay Sands Casino). Singapore Expo is far from the city (near the airport though) and basically a place for warehouse sales and exhibitions and mega churches. Not glitzy at all.

Gays making out in public will not get you arrested in 'any other country'.
And homosexuals are not oppressed in Singaporeans, its just an illusion that the government wants to give to the silly conservative Christian population. Newsflash, half of our celebrities are openly gay. (Ok not half, but quite a handful of them) The government has already officially stated that they do not oppress or dislike homosexuals.
Consuming weed will not get you executed. You get into trouble for bringing in or selling drugs.
There is virtually no credible opposition here.
People here are living comfortably, have jobs, education is partially subsidized, we have the best healthcare system in Asia, can literally walk into any place at any time and feel safe without worrying about some gangbanger shooting you in the face, what do we have to complain about.

We have a barcraft for almost every big event and lots of people come. Also I think there is a huge LoL following in Singapore.

I'm afraid to ask, but I'm pretty sure there has to be some back story to this 'two gays kissing' thing, like repeat indecent exposure or sexual intercourse in public or the officer arresting them has prejudice or whatever. Was it just a freak thing or a common occurance?

I don't remember anyone getting thrown into jail or fined for it at all, it's just that the law is against it.

why am i getting warned?? i just have concerns regarding international events being held in dictatorships.. it's the same like the football world cup in quatar or olympic games in china..
i don't doubt that people can live a happy life there if you adapt yourself to the scene.. but coming from central europe, singapore is one scary place.. it's the most modern dictatorship and things like killing that 18 year old boy from nigeria who was obviously being used as a drug trafficker is quite frightening..
it's funny that people from there defend this government since there isn't even an opposition...
all were being killed or held prison.. anyway my concern that things can go terribly wrong if hundreds of young people from all over the world gather in a place with such strict and unprogressive laws isn't unjustified at all..

What an interesting viewpoint. However, to label Singapore a misanthropic place is misanthropic. On homosexuality After the exhaustive Penal Code review in 2007, oral and anal sex were legalised for heterosexuals and female homosexuals only.
1200 grams of opium 30 grams of morphine 15 grams of heroin 30 grams of cocaine 500 grams of cannabis 250 grams of methamphetamine
hanging Somalia Somalia firing squad Sri Lanka Sri Lanka hanging Syria Syria hanging Sudan Sudan hanging Taiwan Taiwan firing squad / lethal injection Thailand Thailand lethal injection[1] United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates decapitation / firing squad / hanging United States electrocution / lethal injection Vietnam Vietnam lethal injection Yemen Yemen firing squad Zimbabwe Zimbabwe hanging Singapore completes review of mandatory death penaltyAs petrox mentioned, trafficking drugs =/= random tourists smoking weed (although you should no bring weed into Singapore). Cultures are different all across the world. holy crap i had no idea Singapore had such a brutal, oppressive government. Seems like the citizens like it that way too. Why? Coz... stability and if most of the people like the stance on drug trafficking and support capital punishment it's no big deal?
Western countries make too big a deal out of democracy. It has its merits, but it's far from being THE political model.

A week without dope won't kill you.
It's not like the Singaporean government has troops to fire at Europeans on sight or anything...
