If it wasn't for them, how could organizations like KeSPA exist? Is it really the unreasonable for them to ask for a share of the profits KeSPA makes because of this product? Should the movie industry allow theatres to buy a consumer DVD, and charge viewers $5/ticket to see it?
I am sorry for making that remark, I have already stated my opinions on this in several threads where it was on topic (and I will doubtlessly do it again, when it pops again - it would be a big derail here. Just for the record, the "analogy" is totally flawed. Spin me a PM if you are up for an endless discussion.

If a 30-year-old 2v2 BW failure can become the best in SC2 I'm sure most every current A-team BW pro can as well.

Both parts of the history are basically the same. I just do not get, why SC2 fans are mad only about the part 2... they should be mad at both parts. Because Sc2 is the SUCCESSOR to starcraft brood war. Brood war fans need to embrace this. Need to. LoL is going to take over brood war AND sc2 if not. What would you rather see? SC2 can only continue to get better, As it has shown. People need to give it a chance. And they will. I'm sorry, this whole sucessor crap is bullshit. I don't need to embrace anything if I don't like it. I don't care if LoL or SC2 is sucessful or not, I care if BW is. Nothing is entitled to my money/support, unless I actually deem it to be so. That includes BW, I presume, since the foreign BW community has never done anything to support it? Purchasing merchandise/spreading the word/bringing in new viewers/visiting it live/etc doesn't count as support now? Shit. I guess I've never really supported anything but myself then
99% of the foreign BW scene is just watching Nanashin's stream, which KeSPA makes $0 from.

How can you expect esports to be taken seriously, when a game can be replaced on a whim, regardless of its history, or cultural impact. How can esports be taken seriously when a culturally significant game can be replaced by a vaguely related game just because it happens to be set in the same universe and have 2 at the end of its name. game play mechanics evolve over time. Pierce stated Starcraft2 was part of a 10 year eSports plan. so i expect its "eSports life cycle" to be about 10 years. i'm satisfied with that.
Why is it necessary for gameplay mechanics to change? Millions of people still enjoy playing and watching Brood War. New strategies are developed all the time. Something that works so well doesn't need to be changed. Starcraft doesn't need marauders, roaches, and balling up just like basketball doesn't need its ball to be made out of silly putty, and a bull released onto the court in the 4th quarter.
Esports having a ten year life cycle is ridiculous. That means that all achievements in the current game will be thrown out just so Blizzard can cash in. Professional games shouldn't be forced to change into a new version just because some corporate hack decided that would be good for the bottom line.

Yeah not really. Great job making up statistics though. Really solid arguement too, especially considering that they're aren't any SC2 fans doing stuff like that....

To be fair, there was never an alternative. That's changed now with ESportsTV so people need to start using that over restreams.

BW was more popular a couple of years ago yes, but it’s still on prime time TV (compared to random internet streams) and the teams are sponsored by huge companies. More importantly, it’s not like Flash is first popular player in the scene, I even doubt that he has much more fans than Bisu/Jaedong.
It used to be, It's not anymore. Just look at how easily League of Legends is becoming popular. Is that integrated into Korean culture now too?
It is too early to tell how successful LoL will become and for how long it can remain interesting to the viewers. At least it’s doing way better than SC2 at the moment.

Seriously, where did people read
"Mike Morhaime signed a contract with KESPA to kill bw over the next 6 months, and force every bw star players to switch to sc2, using violence if required"
Bw has a lot more Korean viewers than sc2, it will probably have as much impact on bw pros as lol being part of ogn broadcasts

Bw has a lot more Korean viewers than sc2, it will probably have as much impact on bw pros as lol being part of ogn broadcasts The only difference is that instead of having really deep BW rosters, the corporate teams will likely have B-teamers switch to SC2. There will be player losses in that regard, unless they're gonna recruit a ton more just for SC2, which I find quite unlikely.

has anyone considered BW pros want to switch over to SC2 to make more money?
|
has nobody actually thought that this is starcraft's way of defending itself from LoL's ever growing popularity?
By consolidating the BW scene and the SC2 scene they are fortifying their position. Admittedly I don't want BW to end, it is all I watched when I had OGN on my TV network plan when I first got to Korea, but it has to find a way to make itself fresh to a new audience. BW's popularity is waining, and this is an attempt to try and recapture an audience. I would love for KESPA to find a way that both BW and SC2 can live happily together on the Korean pro scene, and I actually think they will. But strengthening the defences (KespA stand to make a tonne of money this way, as they will now have the foreign followers which is something I doubt they are used to.)
However, I will miss going to the esports festival they had in some random ass city, which was attatched to a dance festival, and seeing young kids, and old people playing BW, Sudden and other korean 'esports'. that was awesome

at the rate of current sc2 scene i couldn't see it lasting more than 3~5 years. hopefully proleague to sc2 transition will combine both communities. definitely good thing for korean sc2 scene imo.

bring it on bw, bring it the fuck on. mma and drg can take anyone. except for flash. all bow for flash

Why do you think players are moving over to LoL? Riot injects so much money into the competitive scene. For many talented multi-taking RTS players, LoL is potentially easy money.

On March 18 2012 06:39 Forikorder wrote: has anyone considered BW pros want to switch over to SC2 to make more money? Then they can switch, nothing is stopping them (and in fact some b-teamers did move last year). What does that have to do with this? The players that are playing pro bW right now are doing so because they want to. If they didn't want to they would retire/move to sc2.

Can someone actually explain to me how KeSPA makes money? I see everyone talking doing this will make KeSPA more money because of the larger foreign audience.
I have the impression that KeSPA is tasked with finding huge sponsors for BW events like OSL hence names, for example Jin Air Starleague. These events are also sent on TV by OGN. So exactly where in this process does KeSPAs money come from?
