Just like with the Zergling issue, going back and playing BW has made me see some major differences between the games. When zerglings spawn, they scream. When they attack there is a BAM like they're hitting something, instead of a swish which could mean anything.
Mutalisks, as far as I can tell, don't have an attack sound, much less a high screech like in BW. They probably technically do have a sound effect that plays when they attack, but only technically since I don't notice it.
Hydras used to squirt. You could see the green goo on the screen and hear it happen. Now they shake and there's another kind of swishing effect.
Buff zerg sound effects.

Actually, the unit that has the biggest problem with not making sounds is the Hydra. The Hydra attack is nearly silent, which is bad because it hits so hard. A group of 20 Hydras pounding a CC rips it to shreds in seconds, all without making nary a sound. Unlike DTs, which make a very loud and distinctive sound (this is a good thing).

If you watch the CE Behind the Scenes dvd, you can see how they make the sounds for zerg. One of the sounds is actually a raw chicken squeezed in sour cream! Another one was a soap they had in the bathrooms at Blizzard HQ, which someone found out made a cool sound after having a shit in the bog.

Well I can hear the hydra sound pretty easily personally, but it could use a bit of oompf.
Thing is, I find SC in general has a lack of sound for a game trying t0 improve on the old.
For instance, if you select one of MANY different units in the game, you get absolutely NO sound feedback (rocks, minerals, gas, even some buildings I think).
I also found that sound effects get cut off when another one is playing and it doesn't play multiple sound effects at once like it would in starcraft 1. I find this rather annoying, since it's impossible to tell how many units spawned based off the sound.

@Xapti: I've seen (heard??? XD ) this too - I usually listen for the Queens screech so I know I should haul ass back to the hatch and spit larva. I've had a couple of times where the screech just didn't go off.
The game being as it is I didn't concentrate on the exact sounds that was playing when the queen should have screeched...but still, at the risk of confusing the listener they should enable multiple sounds to be audible at the same time. If I'm waiting for the QueenScreech I'll hear it, even though Grandma wants me to "spawn more overloyyds..."

They should have just improved the SC1 Zerg sounds.

Yea... Buff Zerg Sounds... This thread has sth in common with tht terran music one
|
They only let combat-sounds be loud and everything else was intentionally made quiet. While for observers combat sounds are what is important and not the sound of workers mining, for the gamer it's just as or more important to receive an alert when his drones or overlords have spawed instead of a barely noticeable whisper.
|
I always found the sound of Drones mining to be soothing back in BW.
|
Those guys at Blizzard sure did a great job on the soundeffects... in BW that is
I doubt if the quality of those sound effects will actually be ever surpassed. In beta I already noticed that many of the zerg sounds lacked 'power' in them. Like they just rubbed some pieces of paper together while recording it with a mic..
But then, buffing sound effects is a "content" thing and I seriously doubt Blizz will work on something like content other than HotS... I mean they already got our money..

It's true. In BW the units were like
Zergling: SKREEEEE Hydralisk: HUYYYAAAAA Mutalisk: SHRIAA Ultralisk: ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I don't remember what they say in SC2
|
I was very disappointed when I noticed the sounds (and pretty much everything) didn't change from Beta to Release. I was really hoping they would put more power on Zerg sounds. They just suck.

In SC2 it's like this:
Zergling: EEEK EEEK Hydra: *difficult to confirm* Muta: SWISH SWISH Ultra: ROOONKY DOOOONKY MUUAAR

Yeah what is with that "sounds not overlapping" garbage? The sounds that are given priority over others are poorly chosen. It BW you can rely on the sounds with full confidence that you know whats going on, whats building, and whats being spawned. In sc2 you have to sit in unneeded paranoia that you missed a cue because some zealot was being attacked by a zergling or whatever. They need to fix that. Its one thing about sc2 that bothers me that isnt going away. When units are spawned and when buildings/upgrades are finished you should always always get an audio cue no matter what else is going on. That should be the bare minimum standard.
As far as zerg sounds being too squishy, i agree. But i wonder if they purposely made the sounds in sc2 less volatile because of youtube streams etc having lower quality audio. If you watch CellaWerras stream the sounds for zerg are alot more punchy, but it is due to the lower quality of the sound. Maybe Blizzard just wants to keep the game accessible to mass wide audience by making sure that when joe blow is watching games on youtube the audio isnt all harsh and annoying. We celebrate smashing and crashing sounds, but some people who dont understand what those sounds mean in game might think its obnoxious.
Ive also considered that the guy who did the zerg sound effects just took a chance artistically and it failed from a players perspective. Im crossing my fingers that Blizzard will slowly fix these things over time to make the game perfect. At the very least id like to know when buildings/units are complete for christs sake.
Also, i miss the hydra dying sound. Even though when you are exploding into guts you really cant scream (no longer having a mouth etc), its still awesome sounding in BW. This gave hydras and zerg an attitude like "fuck you" as they died. It really made them seem more vicious. It really baffles me how Blizzard didnt know this kind of thing about their own game and strive to top themselves for sc2. It bums me out like, if it was MY job to do the sound for zerg in sc2, id have at least listened to the sounds from the first game and tried to get a grasp on what its all about. Not being able to distinguish subtle touches like that is a bit unprofessional in my opinion.

they all make those sounds alot more often now....

Then why is there this thread and dozens of others across the internet saying the exact same things since the beta came out?
Btw, hydras do not make the sound they made in BW when they die at all. So i dont see how "not at all" is in actuality "more often".

If u like use the "manly" BW sounds (I remember a post on TL). I hate the new Zerg sounds, had to bring the Hydra spitting sounds back and Zealot's sounds too lol I think the Zerg unit death sounds are quite disturbing, can't listen to those a lot
|
Yea i totally agree, when my extractor finishes in sc1 it makes this awesome noice so i can just click space bar and put units on gas.
in sc2 i have to constantly check because the sound is hardly there.
|
So.. what are the chances of Zerg sounds being fixed? =(
I like most of the sound effects in-game. >For example, the Siegetank, Colossus, and Zealots have very nice attacksounds. I am not saying all the Zerg units have bad soundefects (see the awesome baneling attack sound!!), but most are really disappointing.

Am i the only one that dearly misses the sound bw sound when drones are born!?
